Thanks Rik it works. I've noticed in some cases that one puts empty brackets at the end of certain zope object methods. Is that there for methods that can take parameters? [rh]Um, not quite, it has to do with the way of calling the object methods in question. DTML has two ways of calling: by name and through expressions. 1. The 'normal' Zope way of writing things is <dtml-var objectValues>. This is shorthand for <dtml-var name="objectValues">. 2. The other way is <dtml-var "objectValues">. This is shorthand for <dtml-var expr="objectValues">. Everything inside the expression is treated as a python expression. If you call it without the brackets, you're just referencing the method. If you try that in a DTML Method and look in the source of the diplayed document you'll see something like <Python Method object at 13fcbf0>. If you want to _call_ the method, you'll have to add the brackets (with or without arguments). Hope this is clear. Rik

International characters and Catalog

Hi, I think I have a bug but want to ask YOU. It seems to me that tha ZCatalog index allright when you have set up locale or uses the -L option. But when making my own ZClass and using "Lines" instead of string it doesn't get indexed according to the locale settings. When outputting the lines attribute it just outputs \370, \346 and other values. PropertyIds

I have a very simple documentclass in very simple structure in method that should return the properties of the document: <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('tid', REQUEST.cookies['careermanid'])"> <dtml-with RESULTS> // RESULTS is a ZClass Object Manager <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('tmp', _.getitem(_['tid']))"> // tmp is a document with an id equal to the cookie <dtml-return "tmp.propertyIds"> </dtml-with> During the application i add properties to the document and want to display them with the above method. The Property ids does not get shown though. I've tried: <dtml-with tmp> <dtml-var propertyIds> </dtml-with> and also: <dtml-in "tmp.propertyIds"> <dtml-return sequence-item> </dtml-with> But no luck. How can this work? Roché

If it can offer membership so I can browse and reply from NIP directly, that'll be even better. :) Nowadays, for posting messages to the Zope list, I have to have 3 browser windows open: I simultaneously access Egroups, Zope.org and my Hotmail accounts. Not an easy life. But that's still a heck lot better than receiving 1000 messages per day from all the lists that I frequent. :) If NIP can help me to bring down the number of browsers windows to 2, or 1, that'll be really nice. :) For now, I still have to rely on Egroups to generate the reply-quoted message. I guess I'll use it in combination with NIP or the AIMS group. Instanciate a ZClass out of Zope

ZODB Storage Question

I've been reading through the docs, howtos, etc but haven't found an answer to this question. I was hoping someone could help me out. Is it possible to use the default ZODB store for everything EXCEPT a custom built ZClass? or, even better is it possible to tell Zope not to store more than one copy of my custom ZClass? I have about 400 objects that are updated every ten minutes. Needless to say, Data.fs grows a little faster than I'd like. I'm only changing about 5 attributes of each object and multiple versions of the object aren't important to me. I've seen some of the alternatives to the ZODB, but I'm not looking to replace the entire ZODB. I think ZODB is great and I don't want to lose that functionality for the rest of my website. Any pointers to the right direction would be greatly appreciated. As a last ditch effort, I was thinking of just writing the attributes that change to a database (probably MySQL). My custom ZClass is really a custom python class so I can just add the appropriate python code to my python class. If I do this, <dtml-call "FSSession['username'].update(REQUEST.form)"> and then retrieve with, FSSession['username'] I get {'username':'something'} when of course all I want is something. Products vs. ZClasses- Design Question

Hello, I would like some thoughts on design strategies for Zope classes. I am developing a site that will require writing some custom classes. I would appreciate any opinions anyone could offer. I apologize for such a long message. My class will have some instance variables along with some standard Zope subobjects. My principal concern is that, because the graphical design of the site is still in development, I will probably be making lots of changes to the user interface of the class. I will want those changes to be propogated to existing instances of the class. The underlying logic, however, should be fairly stable. I've thought of three ways to develop the class: 1. Develop the entire class as a Zope product in Python. The advantage I see here is that developing the application logic is fairly straightforward with Python. I see problems, though, with the user interface, especially if I want to make changes to it after instantiating a few objects. It is my understanding that objects created from a Product are not automatically updated when changes are made to the class methods (as opposed to ZClasses, where they are). Am I correct here? 2. Develop the entire class as a ZClass The principal advantage I see is that changes to the class methods are dynamically updated in all instances of that ZClass. The problem is that DTML is (for me, at least) a pain in the ass to write any complicated application logic with. 3. Develop the application logic as a Product in Python, then use that class as a mix-in class for a ZClass that implements UI logic with dtml methods. This seems to be the best solution (even if it is the most work). I should get the advantage of having ZClass instances automatically update changes to ZClass methods, while having the programability of Python for application logic in the Product. If I do take this route, are there any quirks I should be aware of when inheriting a ZClass from a product? I am new to Zope and would appreciate any insight into the tradeoffs among these three strategies. Thank you, Garrin

Hi Scott, Yes, this howto is slightly dusty. If you're running a recent build (say 2.1.4 and higher), I guess you can disregard the bit about patching.
