specifying namespace stacks in <dtml-with>

I was thinking about something I'd consider a useful addition to the <dtml-with> tag; I'd like to get other people's opinions, especially about a couple syntax issues. Problem: In part because of the combination of the dtml namespace stack and acquisition, it's often hard to get exactly the name resolution you want in Zope. For example, I think it's really useful to want the following: "Call an object, found by acquisition, using its "natural" namespace, except include a small number of symbols found in the local namespace. When evaluating the local symbols, do so in the local namespace." Why is this useful? Because it cuts down on accidental interference of the local namespace in the evaluation of an object, which acquisition exacerbates because it multiplies the number of symbols in the local namespace. I'd even go as far as to say that the above action is what most people want to do most of the time. How do you do it? If you do: <dtml-with object> <dtml-with expr="_.namespace(name1=local_object1, name2=local_object2)"> <dtml-var object> </dtml-with> </dtml-with> (or the equivalent using an inner "let" tag instead of "with") you get the right nesting, but "local_object1" and "local_object2" are evaluated in "object"'s namespace, not the local one. I *think* the only way to do it right (I haven't tried it) is: </dtml-let ns="_.namespace(name1=local_object1, name2=local_object2)"> <dtml-with object> </dtml-with ns> <dtml-var object> </dtml-with> </dtml-with> </dtml-let> That way, you can get a namespace evaluated in the local scope onto the top of the namespace stack to override the object's symbols. You've got to go through contortions to swap the order of the namespace stack without introducing unwanted evaluation side effects. Yuck! I think is would be much cooler, and more general, to be able to specify a namespace stack as a list for <dtml-with>: <dtml-with "[_.namespace(name1=local_object1, name2=local_object2), object]"> </dtml-var object> </dtml-with> The "with" tag's entire expression would be evaluated in the local scope, *then* a namespace stack would be constructed, using elements of a list. If you had several objects already, the syntax is even cleaner: <dtml-with expr="[object1, object2, object3]"> ... </dtml-with> In short, this construct lets you build a well-defined namespace stack without worrying as much about unwanted scope interaction. It's even not that hard to write the implementation, except for a couple questions. -- First, the "mapping" attribute to "with" is per-namespace; how do you specify it for elements of the stack? (The "only" attribute is okay, it is specified once per stack.) It would be limiting to say that all namespaces pushed onto a stack would need to be all be mappings or all be objects. -- Second, is the expression for "with" currently ever a sequence? If so, then you'd have to recognize and distinguish between the old and the new usages. I don't think there's much of a problem here, although the "with" tag code does do a little checking about whether its expression is a tuple. -- Finally, what's the natural order of the stack? If you give the argument "[a, b, c]" to "with", is "a" or "c" on the top of the namespace stack? I'd probably say "a". I'd appreciate any ideas/suggestions others may have. Thanks! I seem to recall that this one was me; I likely closed out your Collector issue (May last year, was it), expecting that Evan's (?) "loop variable" patch for the '<dtml-in>' tag would get folded in, which never gelled. The sentiment against "DTML-as-scripting-language" also makes introducing more control structures difficult to sell; I don't buy that, myself, but have to listen to folks who do. Anyway, I'm sorry that your proposal fell through the cracks; the "hot money" these days is all on HiperDOM/XHTML stuff, rather than DTML, so it may stay there (especially if the patch is hard to apply to a recent Zope). ZAlert = 2.3b1 and ZBook out-of-sync ?

Hello I like the revised Zope 2.3b management interface. Big improvement and step in healthy UI direction. Thanks! ..I notice however, that the illustrations in the online version of the book are now visually 'out of sync' with the new Zope software. It may be trivial [non functional] matter and very tedious to fix, but is surely worth considering.. For example: The screen shot in Chapter 2 http://www.zope.org/Members/michel/ZB/UsingZope.html does not display the actual interface in 2.3b1 etc etc .. What to do? Will this be fixed in the printed book? Is it too late? Does anyone care? Does anyone have the time to update these? Am I getting too carried away? It would be a real shame to release the O'Reilly Book and immediately confuse people running 2.3, who I believe the book is your target audience. I believe it would also be a strategic mistake to release the book too soon without making SURE it is as in-sync as possible for an obviously wider audience. Let's assume that 2001, as the [Asian] year of the Snake, is also the year of Pyhon and [imo] the year of Zope. I estimate the Zope User population will at least double during the next 12 months, probably triple. I also expect serious Zope sites to catch on as Zopistas really start to apply their knowledge. Plus I think that Zope will catch on in both business and community [low-budget] applications. The ORA Zope book will become #1 reading for all newcomers and version 2.3++ will be where they begin their journey. They won't know or care about the 'ZPython thingy' debates [a great name] or lots of other stuff. They will care if the screen shots are all wrong and if there is no attempt to address this problem. ZClasses and "title" property

Let me start by introducing myself...My name is Tim Moore and I'm new to the list and Zope in general. I'm still figuring out how everything works, so forgive me if I'm missing something basic here :-) I'm creating several ZClasses for the site I'm working on. In one of them I'd like to have a property called "title", but when I try to add it, I get the following error: Error Type: Bad Request Error Value: The id "title" is invalid--it is already in use. I'm confused, because this seems to happen even when I make a bare-bones minimal class, but a few of the examples I've found on the web site have ZClasses with title properties. I'm using version 2.3b1...is this a recent change in behavior or am I doing something wrong? If this is a change, does this mean I have to use a different property name, or is there some other way I can edit this title property? thanks, -- Tim Moore
