Great job! The only problems I see are that you recorded the Viewlet at too high a screen res...as limiting as it is, it should be at 640x480....or at 800x600....since there is now way to change the window sizing. And, you should speed it up a bit and reduce the distance of mouse movement. This really slows things down. About Viewlets.... I use Viewlets all the time for many things. Has been a powerful tool in my arsenal. Since it's a freeware tool, EVERY aspect of Zope and the products that are created should have a Viewlet tutorial to show setup and/or usage and the product actually in use. And since created Viewlets can be uploaded, stored and accessed for free, by anyone, it would be another great promotion tool for Zope. And since most folks relate to visually presented material, it would certainly help to see how a product is being used in a real situation instead of just writing about it. Go get ViewletBuilder2 and make your own Viewlets at www.Qarbon.com -- Fun to do also! Windows, Linux, Unix and soon Mac for development - playback on just about ANY browser. ftp problem - I get in but not quite to my files

Can anyone explain what is happening when I ftp. Zope is installed on an NT box. I've tried both active and passive ftp neither work. I've included the ftp logs for both attempts below. Uploading stuff one at a time is killing me so I'd really like to get this working if it's at all possible! Restrict users by IP?

I've been trying to restrict users by IP (like in an apache .htaccess file) with Zope. This page, http://www.zope.org/Members/muesli/AuthByAddress, seemed like it would hold the answer. I tried this method but unfortunately I can't add a user with an IP with wildcards to the acl_users folder. E.G. Domain: 128.46.* or Domain: 128.46.*.* Anyone been able to do this? -- Matthew Wirges Credo quia absurdum est.

Unique ID's ?

Hello, After some deep searches about the subject, I found that zope has no real unique ID's. For a particular application (where we can't use the object "url" as an ID as ojects will move), I'd like to assign a unique_id property to each object whenever they are added (the ID must be really really unique). Is there already a patch that do that ? Is there a reason why zope doesn't provide this facility? Thanks in advance, Philippe

replicating stand-alone applications

I have three question about moving stand-alone apps into Zope. If anyone has answers or suggestions, it would save hours of experimenting. My description might seem a bit vague, I am trying to keep the actual complexity out of this message. What I have now is a pure Python application that allows sets of users to define many parameters, kept in lists of tables, and more complex structures. They then specify a input and output file (simple case, 10-10,000 lines of a CSV text file). When they press the calculate button, it adds the input file to the existing data (in a permanent non-SQL file), processes lot and lots of calculations on the date, out creates the output file. All the parameters are currently stored in multiple attributes in a single class, which uses Pickle to save and load one copy for each client. 1) Are the good, easy, or best way of moving or accessing a Python container class from a stand alone program? The class has several attributes which are containers for any number of sets of complex structures. Example of accessing a specific row/ column element directly (which I don't really do) would be: Myclass.payRates['normal']['level']['table'][1,1] and with the Myclass.operators array, the list of objects it would contain would have a different format. My idea was just to read the class in an External Method from the pickle file it is stored in, then have some Zope scripting to pass parameters to the method telling it which array to return. But would this cause a re-un-pickle each time the External Method is called? I have not found any products, messages, or how-to's that address these next two questions that I have. Are they even *possible* from a web application, even if the client is assured of having Python? 2) I would like the option of reading the input file and permanent files from the *users* local hard drive, and the same for writing the output and permanent (modified) file. 3) The calculation process is intense and could be long (1-10 hours). The *ideal* solution would be to have the calculation program running on the clients computer. That way it isn't dependent on nor bogging down the server. I would just have to pass the complex structure of parameters and arrays to the browser's computer. Any ideas? If you made it this far, thanks for reading! --Jerry

External Methods: Object behavior different in 2.4.2 ?

Hello, I have an External Method that imports a module that in turn imports a Python/C library ... (A SWIG'ified software with shadow classes). This used to work fine in 2.4.1 ... But now in 2.4.2 I am having problems: It seems I can only run it once! It does all the work. From what I see above, once the object is instanciated, there's a problem destroying it, or instantiating a new one ... This might be why I get th error above. Funny thing is this worked fine in 2.4.1 ... Is this a bug, or did some sort of behavior change with 2.4.2? And if so how do I get around it? I tried adding a "mymap = None" here and there to force the object to be destroyed after/before use, but that didn't seem to help. Any ideas? Example: To count the number of files uploaded to my site I set an index as an attribute to a Folder. These are large files so they take some time to upload. What happens after two people upload at once does my index only get rolled back or do the files uploaded also get rolled back? zope operations atomic?

Hi: I cannot find documentation that would tell me how zope manages thread synchronization For instance: If there is a python script that adds and removes properties from a folder what happens if there are two http requests to launch the script. Does one thread get a lock on the folder? does on thread get a lock on the Folder property? Any insight would be appreciated? Clark

'summary' metadata in ZCatalog

By default, ZCatalog creates a few metadata elements: id, title, summary, bobobase_modification_time, etc. In the results objects returned by a search of my site, the 'summary' metadata is always blank. The other metadata elements always have something store in them, but 'summary' is always blank. How do I get ZCatalog to store a summary of each object during indexing? Thanks for any replies. Joe
