Could anyone tell me how to implement a very single download counter? I mean the followings: Assume you have a folder named media with subfolders such as audio, video, pic. All subfolderes might have another subfolders, e.g. mp3, wav, ra for audio etc. All folder might have files, not just the lowest one. The tricky thing I cannot figure out is how to write a script able to maintain download counts. What I've tried is that I've made the following change to my ZCatalog's search result page: <dtml-in aCatalogue> <a href="fileDownload('<dtml-var sequence-item>')">title_or_id</a><br> </dtml-in> where fileDownload would be a Python script doing the stuff by checking the file's properties. If the file in question has a dwc attribute, it increases its value by one, if does not have, it creates the dwc property and sets its value to 1. The problem is that I cannot reach the object passed to the script. The question is, how to access that passed File object from Python. Can anyone help me?

Putting Zope into a tailspin can kill a whole Linux Server

This is the second time I have done this and I just thought the list should know. Once in awhile (every six months or so) I send Zope a request that it just cannot handle. At that point (after waiting for a good five minutes) I cancel the request by stopping the browser. This has twice resulted in Zope spinning out of control (taking up more and more CPU) untill it kills the entire server box. How does it kill a Linux box you say? Well, it kills off Apache, kills off SSH (no more remote access), kills off FTP. They all just become unresponsive. Here are the two times it has happened: - Zope 2.3.2, on RH Linux 7.0 384 MB Ram, 650 MHz Pentium: I tried packing the database, stopped it and tried repacking it. - Zope 2.4.2 (same hardware): I tried creating a VERY LARGE Poll graph (10,000) and stopped it while it got going. I don't know if this is a bug or whatever, but it could be a problem. Zope can certainly be sent into a tailspin. BZ

watching Zope internals.

I am interesting in watching the internals of Zope starting from the point where it receives an http request. Unfortunately I am stuck with doing this on w2k and I am wondering if I need to download the source and compile the c modules to do this- if so is there a freeware c compiler I can use. What file would be my starting point. Clark

VHM and hard-wired URLs generated by stock Zope code

Running Zope 2.3.3 with python 1.5.2 I run Zope on a private IP numbered server for users on our LAN but expose some parts of the Zope tree via Apache using ProxyPass and VHM to adjust the URLs on our pages. The problem I'm having is with some of the hard-wired URLs produced by some of the standard Zope code. For instance, the dtml-tree tag generates things like: <IMG SRC="/p_/mi" ALT="-" BORDER=0> The ZMI also does the same although that is less of a problem as, in general, I do not use the ZMI through the Apache proxy. But I might want to in the future. I do not want to use extra ProxyPass directives in my Apache config to handle these "unadjustable" hard-wired URLs. Aside from hacking at the source code does anyone know of a clean solution for this problem.

Programatically changing the owner when adding a zclass instance...

Hi there, I've got a script that creates an instance of a zclass and creates an ID based on the user's name from a form: context.REQUEST.set('id', request.form['nameFromForm']) myContext= context.members.manage_addProduct['MyProduct'] myContext.myZclass_add(myContext,context.REQUEST, NoRedir=1) I want to also set the owner with the same request variable "nameFromForm" I've tried to find some example code with no luck... there are tons of examples of how to set roles and permissions, but not ownership... Can this even be done? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks, Rob

For traversal, You should just be able to acquire folder B's namespace from folder A using <dtml-with>... If not, I think the following more explicit DTML/Python script combo will work for you: DTML: <dtml-with getUserObject> <dtml-comment>do stuff here</dtml-comment> </dtml-with> -------- #==> TTW Python script ("getUserObject"): username = context.REQUEST.cookienameforuser #following assumes you have an object in folder B with an # id that matches the user name namespace_FolderB = context.REQUEST.PARENTS[1]['FolderBId'][username] return namespace_FolderB Hope this helps... Haven't done this, but I've got a good idea how you could... Remember that Catalog indexes objects, which means methods or properties, which means, if you can grab remote content via a method, you can index it; just keep in mind you would need a one-to-one relationship between a local (proxy) object and a remote page. You need to come up with an API and methods framework for spidering your content via http, using a python http client. For each 'page' you will need to create a CatalogAware proxy object in the object database that stores metadata such as the URL (put these proxy objects in a container capable of having lots of objects, like a BTreeFolder). Then you use Catalog to index methods (which really get remote text content) using a text index. Consider, if you have the ability, to cache as much useful metadata in these proxy objects about those pages. I am doing something similar with relational data being indexed with ZCatalog; in the case of data in an relational datastore, I have to have a proxy-object-per-record; in your case, you would need a proxy-object-per-page.
