What do you use for document management?

I need to implement/acquire a document management system (for chip engineering docs) that works well with Zope. I have no experience in the field of DMS, so can someone point me in a good direction. I know there are humongous packages available for megabucks, but my company is not in a position to pay for one of those. I'm hoping for a more modest solution both in scope and cost -- would OpenSource be too much to hope for? -- Loren

newbie: cannot connect to localhost after installing

I have installed 2.3.1 & zserver from the rpm on Mandrake 7.2 (freq) running "/etc/init.d/zope start" as root seems to work. In the browser "http://localhost:8080/manage" results in an error message "cannot connect to localhost" But there is a kpm process 542 zope /usr/bin/python z2.py -u zope -z /usr/share/zope -Z /var/run/zwatchdog.pid -w 8080 -f 8021 -m -l /var/log/zope which presumably means the zserver is running on 8080 Any suggestions? -- David Little

ODBC DSNs don't require drive mappings, use UNC names by typing them into the filename prompt. To map drives under the service's login account, login to the machine as the service account and map the drives. This will however prevent you from unmapping the same drives as a different user from the desktop. This can be very confusing if you are not aware of what is going on. I don't use NFS so I can't address that specifically, but try the UNC's (sometimes you can sub them in the settings file even when the GUI doesn't allow the config.) SiteAccess rule needs to be flushed!

Hey kids, does anyone know how to reverse an accidental SiteRoot change? I can't log into zope b/c the site root folder in conjunction w/apache is wrong. I just want to take out the rule and redo it. Any ideas??? thanks

This title would be different, each time it will be accessed because the time component would change. Properties are not designed for that! They are mappings of names to values of simple types: string, integer, lists, dates... nothing complex. The easiest way to emulate "computed" properties is to use a folderish ZClass that uses DTML objects or Python Scripts (External Methods) as property emulation. There are more difficult solutions that wrap convert property values into DTML objects and then render them.... Dieter

Security - View vs Access Contents

Newbie questions - Zope experience 3 days - be gentle with me ! (1) I want to set the security properties of a sub-folder to relate to a specific user. So I uncheck View for the anonymous user to "force" a Zope login. But it doesn't appear to work. So I uncheck Access Contents too - and it does seem to work. What is the difference between these 2 permissions ? (2) Also I am struggling then to make Zope check the AUTHENTICATED_USER against a property set for the folder which contains the authorised user's initials (which are the same as login name). I am trying to use a standard DTML method but set individual property elements for each sub-folder. Is this OK as an approach ? Or is there a better one ? My DTML code is this ... but it's clearly wrong ! [User is name or property element set for the folder.] <dtml-if expr="AUTHENTICATED_USER.getUserName()==objectValues('User')"> <br>Welcome <br> <dtml-else> <br>You should not be here.<br> </dtml-if> Any advice on either would be much appreciated. Another note here: We use a batch file to map drives letters for an automated DOS application that does a scripted overnight run. If the drive letters are mapped on the open desktop the schedule service cannot map the drives. While drive mappings are user specific, only one set can be active at a time.
