Newbie: using html in zope

Dear All We are adding HTML files as documents to our zope site. The files are using the default css stylesheet for our site. This is working lovely as we single-source from FrameMaker and deliver in a number of formats and there are a few hundred files already placed in our site. The only problems are - table widths: The tables stretch across the page and right off the screen (past the header). The text wraps correctly at the end of the page but the table cell just keeps on going. This makes the file useless to print (they are for reference and we would like them to be able to print out). I really do not want to have to specify exact coloum widths but want the tables to be 100% of the screen. - font sizes: In the style sheet I have added a number of extra styles. Everything such as, indentation, colour, font style, etc, is being reflected in the html files when displayed except the font size. Everything is the same size. However, new member variables that you add will not be defined in current instances. The trick is to define default values for new variables as class variables, and override them them with self.new_variable = new_value whenever you update them. I switched over to Python products after creating only a couple of ZClasses. While getting off the ground with ZClasses is a lot easier, in the long run you'll be better off with Python products (depending on your level of comfort with Python). If you are interested in getting started with Python classes, I highly recommend Max M's A very minimal Product (http://www.zope.org/Members/maxm/HowTo/minimal_01/) and A Minimal Product - The Sequel (http://www.zope.org/Members/maxm/HowTo/minimal_02/) Once you've gone through these tutorials, read chapter 3 (http://www.zope.org/Documentation/ZDG/Products.dtml) of the Zope Developer's Guide (http://www.zope.org/Documentation/ZDG) Assuming you don't have to many methods in your ZClass, converting isn't to hard to do by hand. Just turn all of your Python scripts into methods and each of your DTML documents/methods into files in a 'dtml' folder inside your product folder. Then import them using DTMLFile (Max M. shows you how. Don't forget the .dtml extension on your DTML files!) As far as I'm aware, changing a ZClass over to Python will break all of your existing instances, unfortunately. You could write a script to convert them, blah, blah. But who wants to do that? It's better to do it in Python in the first place (but get to know ZClasses first, just don't put to much work into them). One thing I like about Python classes is the ability to add custom Security Declarations (i.e., defining custom permission names; the Products chapter of the Zope Developer's Guide gets into this). Using Image name like "foo.gif" w/o painful <dtml-with> problems?

Our site currently has images that have no .gif or .jpg at the end of their ids. We're starting to use a clickthrough-analysis program that tracks site usage, and assumes that all '.gif' and '.jpg' file are graphics. Of course, to track site usage, it's important for the analysis program to distinguish graphic requests from page requests. We planned to rename all of our image file to __.gif, but because of the overloaded meaning of the "." (as both separting objects & methods/attributes, and as a file extensionn), it makes for very ugly DTML -- something like: <dtml-var "images.randompic.tag(hspace=10)"> has to become <dtml-with images> <dtml-with randompic.gif> <dtml-var "tag(hspace=10)"> </dtml-with> </dtml-with> Or <dtml-var "images['randompic.gif'].tag(hspace=10)"> which is better, but still as nice as the original. Of course, we could make our own img tags, like: <img src="/images/randompic.gif" hspace=10> but then we lose the automagic titles, height, width, etc. that Zope can provide. On the plus side, having graphic files with "ordinary" extensions will let us work a bit easier w/WebDAV and FTP, as some programs always expect file to have these extensions. So: 1) Is there any way to call a picture within a folder without the twice-nested call above? Any workarounds? 2) Any other ideas on how to handle this? How do other sites deal with this? ./start not finding the correct Python

just installed Python 2.1.1 as well as Zope 2.4.0. I've run Zope 2.4.0's "w_pcgi.py" script specifying python 2.1.1, however when I run the start script, it tells me I'm only using Python 2.0. Running "python -V" returns Python 2.1.1. What am I doing wrong? ------------------------------------------ Seamus M. programmatically renaming multiple objects

I am looking for a way to change the id's of multiple objects by a method. I have a DTML-Document that is filled with objects (paragraphs) by <dtml-in>. What I want to do is to be able to insert a new object by a web interface at any place in the list, not only at the end. When I want to insert the new object in the middle, I have to rename all objects that follow. Does someone know a way how to do it? Help would be great. Thanks Dirk

It's a way of expressing some basic markup w/o any HTML. (The Zope Book covers this). With Structured Text, you can contol bold, italics, links, tables, etc., so it might be more power than you want, *plus* structured-text doesn't filter out actual html commands (which is normally a good thing, so that you can hedge in a tiny bit of html that there isn't a structured-text equivalent.) If you want people to provide basic content (aka sentences, paragrpahs, bold, italics, nothing else), you could run their input through a python regular expression that turns *hello* to italics, **hello** to bold, and nothing else. (Or if your users know HTML, turns leaves and alone, and nukes all other HTML tags. Check out the Strip-O-Gram. Patch to make Xron work under Zope 2.4.0

The Xron scheduler product tries to import DateTime from Globals, but under Zope 2.4.0 it is not available from Globals and must instead be imported directly from DateTime. Zope Management Interface: Bug of IE?? or Zope Feature

Hello, in a hand-made ZClass the tabs of 2 of 4 instances show this-->>>> <a href="manage_UndoForm" ----->>>>target="blank" > Undo</a> This means the manage - view opens in a new window! I can't reproduce my behaviour to find a solution (the Classes have got an attribute target but can this mix up Zope??). I use IE 6 (but 4.7 shows the same) on Win 2000 server. Thanks!
