Final application distribution policies

How do you do when you finish an application that will run on your clients' server, and you don't want them to modify the source code, due your need to reduce future failure risks, not imputable to you or your code? I know that with respect to Zope's license, binary distribuitons are allowed, so how would you protect/close a finished application? What would your primary concerns be and what security policies would you use? Thanks in advance, Ausum

A Message from Digital Creations

Those of you who have been in the Zope community for a while, know that I was an active lurker on all of the lists. For those of you who have been around since the beginning, you may remember that I have even posted a thing or two. Thanks to the phenomenal growth of the community and the traffic, your posts so overwhelmed me, that I eventually had to back off to only subscribing to the "Announce" lists. That is unfortunate, because I truly enjoyed being more active with the community. There have been a number of posts on ZopeZen (and perhaps elsewhere), speculating on the move we made yesterday to close two remote offices. I have no issue with anyone's desire to speculate, and with others' desire to publicly debate the possibilities. This is one of the realities of being an open company, with a wonderful, wide-spread community. It seems prudent however to at least hear our perspective once. It is my intention not to respond to any replies to this post, since I intend to be complete in my statement, and have all too long a history of being dragged into unproductive Usenet flame wars to fall for that again (at least not here :-). Digital Creations closed two small offices yesterday (Wednesday, July 11th, 2001). The two main drivers for making such a difficult decision were: 1) Current Economic Conditions 2) Geographical Challenges with regard to Management The closures had _nothing_ to do with any shift in strategy away from Open Source. There were no layoffs in the engineering group in Fredericksburg, where the core Zope engineers are. There has been speculation that PythonLabs is "on the move again". If this were something we wanted, they'd literally be "on the move" already. They are not! Supporting 100% of the development of Python by one company is a financial challenge indeed. If we didn't consider it a priority, it would have been simple to cut them loose. We did not. Nothing should be read into the above paragraph to say that any part of Digital Creations is a "Sacred Cow", never to be examined and considered for a change. However, it is crucial that everyone understand that this change does not materially effect Zope, Python, or the community. Please understand that it is my opinion that there is no value in my debating the above in public (or private) with anyone. Therefore, please do not consider it an insult if no one from Digital Creations further responds to anything else on this topic.

OK, it's not a directory on disk - it's a directory in the ZODB. But you should be able to simply create a "File" object in the right place in the ZODB and upload your .jar into that file. An alternative approach would depend on the way you're using Apache. If you have a virtual host for your Zope site, and let's say you're using FastCGI to communicate between Apache and Zope, then you should be able to tell Apache _not_ to do so for URLs containing, for example "/applets/", and to instead serve them direct from some directory in your filesystem (as you would with standalone Apache). Then you'd just put your .jar(s) in that directory. This is a common strategy for, eg, serving images. (creates an error) One thing you need to be aware of is that your script must parse properly before you can save it to the ZODB over ftp (same as in the Zope Management Interface, in fact). Using Java Applets in Zope

Hello, I am trying to use a Java IRC Client in one of my Zope sites but .. I have no idea where I should put the *.jar files so the applet tag can find them. Anyone out there with a solution? Don't know if it's relevant but I'm using Zope 2.2 with an Apache server in front of the Zserver. Dear Sir, We are the team of Globarena while working with zope we got the some doubts. Please clarify these doubts and Send me the feedback as fast as possible. 1. How to trigger the EVENTS in zope server. How we can capture the events. 2. What is the scripting object model of zope objects? 3. Suppose I written one content and I saved the content then copy of the content should be saved to his current folder and .the same copy should be present in the another we prescribed folder (How can I achieve this through script). 4. How can we fire the scripts while performing some actions in zope server like(Clicking on file names or Buttons). 5. How can we show the alert boxes in zope server (Through DTML or SCRIPT). 6. Whenever we are working on versions if I lock the version in particular folder then if I try to add files then the zope is Throwing version lock error. Please give me the clear idea about versions. Script (Python) function definitions

Defining functions within Script (Python) methods doesn't seem to work very well. This code... def funcA(): print "<p>Hello, from funcA()!</p>" def funcB(): print "<p>Hello, from funcB()! I also have a message from funcA()...</p>" funcA() funcB() return printed ...produces the following error... Error Type: Name ErrorError Value: funcA Apparently, funcB doesn't know where to look for the definition of funcA. If I were to call funcA from the body of the script instead of from a function, the script would execute with no problem. Would anyone be so kind as to share their insight into this matter? Should I not be writing def's into my Python scripts but instead relying solely on other Python scripts for reusable code? I apologize in advance if any of this is covered in the docs. _________________ meeper
