Caching zclass methods

Folks, I've been using ram cache manager and it's been working great, speeding things up quite a bit. However, I haven't found a way to use it with zlass methods. Is it possible? Anyone did it? What is the standard procedure for running several different Zope instances from the same installation. We have Zope installed in a Unix directory shared across workstations, and we want to run Zope servers on several different machine-port combinations, each with their own object repository and, ideally, their own set of Extensions and Products. I'm not looking for anything fancy, just some procedural recommendations. Another way of asking this, I guess, is: when you start Zope, are all files and directories obtained from the directory from which you started it, or can you point Zope to a common installation but take certain files and directories (Extensions, Products, and whatever ZODB needs) from the startup directory? -- --- Mitchell

Q: symbolic link between folders/elements?

Hi everybody, this Object Oriented database stuff still fools me sometimes, I have a simple problem, but I can't get out of it. I have a Catalog, consisting of many nested instances of a folder-like python product I've made, and some Products that have to go inside the Catalog. How can I put the same product inside two (or more )different Catalog folders? (of course I don't want to copy it, it has to be the same, if I modify one the other(s) has(have) to change too). In my mind that looks like a symbolic link between Products (or folders). Is that possible? Thanks for helping me in this never ending quest for zope knowledge :-) |G|

Product Design Help

Once upon a time I wrote an IRCLog product for handhelds.org, using the a2k (accutron 2000) ircbot (python based) to relay the irc messages into zope. The product was written for Zope 2.2 (IIRC) and while still setup, the accutron bot is no longer recording IRC messages. In any case... I made a design decision that was pretty bad when designing the original IRCLog product. That decision was to store all of the irc messages in arrays, with each message adding to the array and then storing it in the ZODB. This caused the ZODB to grow very fast (considering 500-1000+ irc messages a day) as each copy of the array was stored in the ZODB. So. Recently I decided to port the zope product to 2.4.1 and update it to use a more resonable storage mechanism for the messages. Here are the following storage mechanisms I've come up with: 1) Create another class and have the main zope product create one of these classes for each message and store that (in a folderish way) in the ZODB. This should cut down on the rapid growth of the ZODB (vs. precvious versions) and keep everything in zope. 2) Write the irc messages to a text file and have the IRCLog parse/display that. I'm not too fond of this because it really doesn't take advantage of zope's abilities, the ZODB, etc. 3) Write the irc messages to an SQL database (we run MySQL on hh.org; but I could run postgres as well). I don't have much experience with Zope+SQL databases and I'm not too eager to learn right now...But if it offers some advantages I may do it this way (Note: SQL doesn't scare me.). But this also has the disadvantage that I'm again going outside of Zope. So ... here are my questions: 1) Which one of the above (or other) storage mechanisms would you use and why? 2) What do I need to pay attention to porting from zope 2.2 to zope 2.4.1? Note: I've been away from zope development (and python) for a while (doing java...which I've just decided to totally hate .. but that's another story) .. Add "type > myzClass" does not have a property for title?

Have I missed something? Or is "title" completely missing when you add a zClass object? It only asks for the ID. I have had to add "title" manually to the "property sheets" to compensate for this. If I am not mistaken, This seems like a major ommission and Zope inconsistency with zClasses which are supposed to be Folder-like. The Zope Book "Chapter 9" says to create a "title" index in a zCatalog, but the zClass doesn't have a "title" property...? Thanks for any clarification on this, -Trevor

finding an object at startup

Is there a way to fetch a particular zope object from within the __init__.py product file? What I'd like to do is modify my ZSQL database connection adapter from within a python hotfix, rather than startup zope and set it via web/manage interface. In fact, if my SQL machine is forced to move to a new location, I may not even be able to startup zope. I've also tried hand editing the Data.fs file, which didn't work. Thanks, Albert

Slightly related to this... Somehow if I were to guess, Zope could definitely handle the traffic of a big media site, supposing there was at least one or more of the following: 1 - use of ZEO 2 - #1 plus heavy use of front-end caching and proxy-based load-balancing of ZEO nodes w/ Squid 3 - (most aggressive) Load-balance several boxes doing #2 using L4 switch #3 is in theory, the smartest move if you want to support daily 8-digit hit-counts, if the same "semi-dynamic" content (of which news is), only has to be generated once, then cached, it would be served out of RAM as an in-transit object from the proxy server. This caching arrangement (well, for now, 1&2, with 2 ZEO client boxes and a ZSS) seems to work well for our online classified ads site, which sustains around a million plus hits on a good day. Most of those hits, the ZEO clients / Zope servers never see because most are images, which are cached in Squid on the first load. I'm pretty sure that with enough hardware (i.e. 1, 2, and 3 above) this same sort of arrangement could scale just fine to 8-digit page views per day for a news site, supposing you have the bandwidth to accommodate that sort of traffic as well. Null value from Form Input

I have a form with a series of radio buttons that allow rating 1-5. In order to make it easier to get an average of those numbers, I'd like to allow NULL inputs. A snippet of my SQL method to update the database is: INSERT INTO tblContactEval (responsiveness) VALUES(<dtml-sqlvar responsiveness type="int" optional>); The form looks something like this: <input type=radio name=responsiveness value=1>1&nbsp <input type=radio name=responsiveness value=2>2&nbsp <input type=radio name=responsiveness value=3>3&nbsp <input type=radio name=responsiveness value=4>4&nbsp <input type=radio name=responsiveness value=5>5&nbsp When I do not check any radio button in that group I get a "Bad Request" error citng the "responsiveness" variable. How can I get a NULL value into my database for those situations where this category does not apply? thanks, mjm

Not sure I understand the problem... I'm gonna forward it to the list to see if someone else does. _get_filename should return the filename and path as one string...
