Upgrade to 2.5.0 breaks site: TypeError: object of type 'string' is not callable

I'm running into strange trouble with one site when I try to upgrade it from Zope 2.4 to 2.5.0. With 2.4 (up to 2.4.4b1), the site works fine. Now when I upgrade Zope to 2.5.0 (or 2.5.1b1), I get an "TypeError: object of type 'string' is not callable" whenever I try to access the site (see below). Furthermore, running the Data.fs ZODB with 2.5.x once seems to corrupt it! I.e. when I move back the Data.fs to 2.4.4b1 (where it had worked before), it suddenly fails with the same error! The ZMI (http://localhost:8080/manage) also fails with this error. The output of starting Zope (see below) doesn't show anything suspicious. I have no idea what could cause this problem, and how I could try to track down the problem. Below I attach the output of starting Zope in debug mode. SOLVED: Why my Zope kept dying...

In the spirit of sharing knowledge rather than just asking questions... : ) I thought I would pass along what APPEARS to be the solution to my problem of Zope dying . After reading the "Gotchas for Zope Beginners" HowTo: http://www.zope.org/Members/jens/docs/newbie_caveats it sounded like this paragraph applied: "If you cannot log out after starting Zope using the "start" script in the Zope install directory without bringing down Zope you might want to edit the start script and remove the "-D" option in it. "-D" stands for debug, the process won't automatically detach from the terminal it was started on when -D is specified." This sounded like what I was experiencing. As long as I left the terminal window open, it seemed to run find, but if I closed the connection or tried running another command it would quit. So I took a look at the Start script and it was indeed setting the "-D" option in the last line of the script. I removed the last line, restarted Zope and it has been up since. This leads me to believe that my 2.5.1b1 problem may have been the same thing. I may reinstall it just to see. But I will stick with 2.3.3 as my "production Zope server" for now because I MUST use the Virtual Host Monster and the #Zope IRC channel tells me that VHM has some problems with 2.5 . Solved it. Supposedly, User Environment Variables take precedence over System Variables in WindowsNT, but this doesn't appear to be the case, in practice. Here's how to add the Z_REALM system variable: <WARNING> Modifying the registry can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. I can't guarantee that problems resulting from modifications to the registry can be solved. Managing security of DTML manage_changeProperties and DTML API

Is it insecure to allow Manage properties to Anonymous? My site does not allow Anonymous to Access management screens, Add DTML documents, DTML Methods and Python scripts. So there is no way to slip in executable content. It does allow Authenticated users to create documents, but in ZClass form, and ZClass instances only have properties so they should not be executable. But it gives Manage properties to Anonymous. Because for some ZClass documents the site records number of readers. So the ZClass' index_html has propertysheets.data.manage_changeProperties(readers=readers+1)). Is it possible to call DTML API through a URL? Like http://www.site.com/folder/instance1/propertysheets/data/manage_changePrope… If it is, I'm hosed :-) Would it be more secure to disallow Manage properties to Anonymous, remove the manage_changeProperties line from ZClass' index_html, put it in a single line DTML_Method and give that DTML_Method a Manager Proxy role? (I'd prefer to not give Manager proxy role to ZClass' index_html) -- Milos Prudek

Indeed, I was using Explorer 5.0, and I cannot reproduce the error in version 5.5. I've managed to narrow down the error to the ptAdd.zpt and ptEdit.zpt in Products/PageTemplates/www directory. It appears that Explorer 5 objects to 'tal:replace="structure here/manage_page_header"' and '<h1 tal:replace="structure here/manage_page_footer">Footer</h1>'. I can replace it with <dtml-var manage_page_header> and <dtml-var manage_page_footer> and get the add page to work. Unfortunately, I don't know how to replace 'tal:define="body request/other/text | request/form/text | here/read"' in edit page (here/read raises an error) and anyway it is probably not a good idea to alter these files. I'll just upgrade my browser and hope that everyone else working with Zope here will be willing to do the same. Many thanks for your help.
