I spent some time this afternoon after my last post on this topic messaging back and forth with my friend and colleague Kevin Altis of PythonCard fame. I think I understand better now how to proceed with this project, at least *one* way to proceed better. I was making the classic programming error of letting implementation drive design. I don't *need* objects here. I can store all of the data I need stored in standard Zope objects and then use Python and DTML to manipulate their contents. I had allowed myself to become convinced that to "create a new clearing" of necessity meant creating a new clearing *object*. But a Clearing could be a structured document (XML), a collection of SQL database records or, as it turns out after only a little experimentation on my part, a collection of folderish Zope objects and documents manipulated directly through DTML (setting properties, etc.) IOW, no need for custom classes, just extend the built-in classes via properties which can be set in DTML methods and Python scripts. This is clearly no less OO than my original approach, but it will be several orders of magnitude easier to write and maintain. I'll probably finish this project now in about 10%of the time I've already spent just trying to get ZClasses working to my satisfaction. Lesson learned. If it seems too hard, it probably is. Thanks to Chris Weathers, Dieter Maurer, and others on this list for their help and insights. This is a fantastic community demonstrating once again why Zope rules.

Mixing ZPT and DTML in CMF

I know that ZPT and dtml-should not be mixed together, but I am moving old site from dtml to ZPT in CMF and wanted to test around, a couple of things. I stumbled into a strange behaviour when I wanted to use portal_url-tool in on of my dtml-piece that was later on included into a ZPT-template. In ZPT I include the file in the following way: <span tal:replace="structure container/navbar">Navigation bar</span> navbar is a DTML-method, in which I state: <dtml-let osoite1="portal_url" path="_.str(osoite1)+'/'" > Which makes no sense, since osoite1 will be an istance or URLTool. Meaning when I view the DTML-method it will show something like <URLTool instance at 906d7a8> But when that is included into the ZPT it will transform into the absolute url. Great. First I tried to use in dtml portal_url() which actually made it work in the DTML, but caused TALES-error in ZPT. ... Now my question is, that can anyone share any wisdow from where this behaviour comes from? I will be moving from the DTML later on, but for now it would be nice to know. -huima

Zope Booth at Apple's WWDC

Newbie question on passing arguments

I have a DTML Method: <dtml-let webUrl="getRelativePath(rel=absolute_url(relative=1), ip=hostIP)"> calling a script: def getRelativePath(rel, ip): weburl = ip + rel return weburl And getting the following error: Zope ErrorZope has encountered an error while publishing this resource. ZSyncer and accented chars in title

When source document has accented characters in its title, it *is* synced successfully but it cannot it synced from then on. ZSyncer gives error message: "Syntax error at line 31: illegal character in content" How can I fix it? I'm using accented character from ISO-8859-2 set (Czech characters). I'm using ZSyncer 0.3 and Zope 2.4.3 under Linux. -- Milos Prudek

I see now that DTMLDocument is a subclass of DTMLMethod (which isn't in the Zope Book but which I found on the Zwiki). Then I noticed that manage_edit() is a function of the DTMLDocument. Don't know how I overlooked it but I'm on it now. So now I know how to change the DTMLDocument's contents. Off to see if I can dope out user-defined properties on Zope objects (not custom ZClasses). I'm sure it's in here somewhere.

Sorting in ZPT ... duh... apologies

Yep. The last message was full of crap. It didn't even work like it was supposed to do. The better way to do sorting ofcourse was to use sequence.sort.
