A while a ago there was discussion about the community stalling and the state of the documentation. As far as I can remember and see, there wasn't really any agreements or solutions what to do -- so I raise the question again -- and propably aim it to the people at Zope corp., what we -- noble users -- could do to help your work on documentation? I am no frigging genius, but after banging my head enough to the wall I learned to turn into the source code and find answers from there. As it brings some enligthment from time to time, I - personally - would like to help others to find the answers more easily, and possibly let them solve some other problem and that way help me, while I'm propably facing that problem in the future. We have a great community -- that is unfortunately in very many pieces around the world. Nice thing is the diversity, but in some cases the effiency suffers. Should one turn into ZDP, Zope zen, zope newbies, zopelabs or search through the mailinglists? Huh? Joel Burton asked wether there would be people interested to help in these efforts, or more precise to be leaders in such cases. I emailed him that I would like to help, but at this stage could not be a leader of any kind. Now I am asking, is there -- in the wide open world -- a person or persons, who would like to help the community get back on the knowledge building-track? What I am suggesting is that together we create a certain set of methods of work, that we all will follow and help others to follow. These will include some etiquette on the mailinglists, howto's and what to do with the information -- for example where to store good code snipplets etc. I know it sounds hard and would require work with many people, especially the great persons who now maintain great sites at zope.org -- but also zopezen.oeg, zopelabs.com, zopenewbies etc. We have so much what we could - for example tell stories and write case scenarios about how we have used Zope and how we have planned to use it in future. There is whole lot of tacit knowledge stored into many of the seasoned Zope-developers and the challenge for the whole community is to get that knowledge into usable form. While Dieter's and others replies on the mailing lists are excellent, I believe that we could achieve more. For example by writing summaries of our problems and solutions, and storing them in some good format with good metadata so that the searches will find them better than now. But where and how? This is where we - as a community - would need to make decisions and stick by them. Possibly it would require that some persons would work as a coordinators, and many others -- just like myself -- would assist them by creating content and moving information from one place to another. But coordination is the key, wether you like it or not. It only requires some time and commitment -- which for most of us equals money. But count the numbers and tell me honestly, would you have any less -- or way much more, if our community for some parts would work like a well oiled machine. Atleast for me, Zope has been a great source of inspiration -- and honestly changed the way I see development... And I would be honoured to give something really valuable back. Issue tracking

I'm looking for an issue tracking product for Zope. I would like a web-based app where my customers can log support requests etc and I can keep track of the status of each issue. I have already found a few candidates on zope.org but can anyone recommend a good one? Preferably one that's quick and easy to get up and running, not too complicated. T.

External Method and PIL

reindex_object() in a python script??

Hi, I create an Object instance in a python script, and then change two of the properties. (see below). Even though i'm calling reindex_object, after the Task object is added to the Folder, it is not in the ZCatalog TaskCatalog until i manually add it. The Task's ZClass (task) is CatalogAware. Thoughts? You're right, it's the browser cache! There was a gif file named 'mychart?' ('mychart' is my chart's name) in the temporary internet files' folder, so I suppose the browser just shows that file again and again. If I delete this file and ask to show the page again, it generates the chart properly. So now we know what the problem is, but I need a solution! How can I tell my browser not to use this file? Or how can I delete this file from Zope? Are there Graphic Designers?

Hello everyone, as we are moving forward developing Zope 3 with large steps, it becomes more and more desirable to think about a nice frontend (ZMI) for Zope 3. However the skill set of the developers currently working on Zope 3 does not include good graphics design skills. For this reason the development team is looking for one to two good graphic artists who would like to work on the look and feel of the new Zope version. Since it is fully developed from scratch, there are almost no restrictions, other than: It has to be functional. Are there any takers? Problem: performance of retrieving properties from objects...

Hi all, Due to a deadline in one week (yeah, I know, shame on stupid me!!!) and some problems I ran into, combined with my still too low Zope-experience (learning fast!), I could use some experience in datastorage matters in Zope... Of course, I would like to experiment myself as much as possible, but well, time is running out... I am experimenting with adding and retrieving lots of properties on propertysheet objects, within ZClasses. I find the performance of retrieving large sets of properties (say 400 props, strings, lines etcetera) in this way, way too slow for my application (on my slow pc (300 MHz) it takes 30 seconds). Also, while holding the number of retrieved properties constant, the retrieval-proces gets slower when the propertysheet contains more properties ;-( For the sake of the discussion, suppose I use propertyItems() on a propertysheet to retrieve the data. So now I am forced to experiment further with another way to store my data. So maybe one or two experienced ZopeGuru's can shed a little light on the following possibilities (so I have to experiment a little less in my free (whoohaha) weekend, myself ;-): 1) Suppose I build a new python baseclass in which the bulk of my properties are stored. My slow ZClass object (actually a CMF object) uses this as a base class, and I write my own data-retrieval methods. How much will the increase in performance be? Would it be worth the while? Will I still be able to use the portal_catalog to catalog some interesting properties (I guess yes). 2) Suppose I have to switch to a database (there goes my weekend and free evenings next week). I want to retrieve the properties as one record then. I think the number of 400 props will decrease in this matter, too. I assume the database will retrieve these results a LOT faster. How much will the overhead be, however, to send such a dataset back to Zope...? How about using this database in combination with an existing catalog? 3) Suppose I build a CMF product entirely in python (may god help me), and I store all these properties as mentioned in (1), would the performance be higher than in case (1)? Pfff, back to my application and coffee now. Any help and insight will be greatly appreciated... When I have time, I'll write a summary or a How-To on how to handle these kind of storage problems... zope, fastcgi, and large files

I'm currently using zope 2.3.3, apache 1.3.20, and fastcgi. So far it works quite well. However, I'm trying to support large transfers, protected via a acl_user (passwords, expiration, etc.). Each download/transfer could be 20-50mb. Initial implementation is done by setting the response header to be an binary attachment, then use the RESPONSE.write() command to stream out the data. However, it appears FCGIServer buffers the *entire* 20mb before sending it out to the apache mod_fastcgi. This won't work for me, as it's a huge memory hog, plus there's a noticeable delay before the buffer is flushed out to apache. The FCGIChannel sendDataRecord() and push() shows that buffering is turned on, due to some thread related issue. Forcing it off indeed shows problems when there are multiple connections If I didn't have to deal with passwords/expirations, I could have done this outside of zope. Is there a better way to handle this? How does www.zope.org deal with this? Thanks, Albert Ting (alt(a)sonic.net)
