Hmmm... Devote the 2.1GB disk to OS (Solaris or Linux on Sparc). The other one do a /zope partition. Then store all your Zope instances there. How much RAM do you have in that?

Hello- I have a simple question. I would like to do this: <dtml-with <dtml-var group>> But of course it does not work. <dtml-var group> Is a value in my MySql database. It also represents a directory name in my Zope tree. Meaning is the user is in the engineering group they will be forced into the engineering directory. Did that make any sense? I am running a zope site for the Epilepsy Surgery Dept data here at the U of C, managing patient information: EEGs, MRIs, that kind of things. One of our users is a veteran neuro-surgeon from Soviet Georgia who is providing, among other things, the seizure diagnosis and summaries. He is used to working in Microsoft Word and wanted the ability to add bold, emphasis etc... I explained that web browsers didn't support that kind of stuff in the same way that MS Word did, but that he could use structured text. To keep is simple, I only showed him only how to use bold and emphasis. I wrote on a piece of paper to demonstrate: Bold: **This sentence is bold** Emphasis: *This sentence is emphasized* He balked, saying this would take him too long, and I retorted, "no this is easy, just an extra character here and there". He said "This will make my 3 page patient summaries 6 pages long". It took about 15 minutes before I realized that he thought he had to type the whole damned sentence above every time he wanted to make something bold, ie, to make the phase "partial seizures" bold in the sentence below, he would have to type: The patient presented with a **This sentence is bold**partial seizure. Well, once that was cleared up he appeared satisfied. He came back this morning with several summaries completed, filled with proper structured text markup. He had gone home the night before and written it in Word, and came in the morning and pasted it into the web form. That gave me a particular sense of satisfaction: writing structured text in Word. This morning I printed up plenty of rich examples for him -- tables, lists, links, the works. We'll see where he goes. John Hunter

I think this sums it up pretty well; something else I might add: in addition to tools like pychecker, for a dynamically-typed language like Python with strong support for different unit-test frameworks and type checking mechanisms in the standard library, I'm not sure that you need to rely on the crutch of static typing, compiler warnings, etc, like you would in C/C++/Java - these would never buy you what automated unit-testing will (provided that you do it), and create a large amount of overhead that, while good at catching a small percentage of certain errors before runtime, make you jump through hoops to get there. Besides that, Java code is ugly (like all Cish languages and Perl). The thing I don't understand about people who might prefer Java to Python is why they are willing to let the complexity of the language obscure the problem being solved, especially when you have to read someone else's code. Python lets your code get straight to the point and just solve a real problem, IMHO. There are several products that store underlying file data on disk, and metadata in proxy objects in the ZODB: http://www.zope.org/Members/MacGregor/ExtFile http://www.zope.org/Members/arielpartners/ExternalFile Or, create custom products that do this to fit your needs. A good hypothetical example is if you wanted to store 60MB postscript files and manage thousands of these files; their metadata could be stored in the ZODB; you could write filters to make their text contents able to be indexed by a Catalog. What is stored in ZODB (either in a file-proxy object or in a Catalog) is meaningfully queriable information. What kind of data are you trying to store? Hi, I've received here an old Sun Sparc with an 2.1GB and 4.1 GB SCSI and I would like to set it up mostly as a Zope server. Anybody who can give me advice on the best partition structure for this thing? Thanks, Tom.

ZCatalog and ExtDocument

Hi There. I´ve been searching about ZCatalog and the usage of ExtDocuments. I´ve read that this product may allows you to have searchable documents content via ZCatalog. But I couldn´t quite get how to let the ZCatalog catalog the contents of ExtDocuments. Other thing that stills a mistery for me is how to let a ZCatalog update its indexes automatically. Where do I set that I want to have my Objects and new ones of a kind cataloged automatically? Use of ZMI Find Tab

Is it possible to perform searches via the find tab (advanced search input form) for occurrances of text in ZClass properties? I have searched the docs and listings for hints but nothing specifically says this can be done. It is also unclear regarding the limitations of the expression box. The source (FindSupport.py) appears to set up an eval call so I am not sure how best to setup an expression that would work here. Also, the source looks to set up a special handler for ZClass meta_types (grabbing propertysheets.methods), so I am confused whether this can be accomplished via this service or will I have to setup my own using zopeFind?
