ProxyPass - bleah. I don't know why people keep using this. We used to, and it caused no end of pain and angst. From the weird and crappy interactions with rewrite rules, the poor error handling, the time spent debugging it... fastcgi is much much more robust, for us. permission, roles, security question

Hi, I'm working on the following problem: A user is authenticated in a user folder and has the following roles: Anonymous (can, should a authenticated user have the role anon ?) Authenticated, Manager, some others In the permission of 'View' I will do the following: permission not acquired permission for Anonymous is disabled permission for Authenticated is not vissible (is that correct ?) permission for Manager, some others are enabled Will the 'View' permission enabled or disableed on the affecting roles ? Anonymous disables the 'View' permission (or does it mean Anonymous doesn't enables 'View' permission ?) Manager enables the 'View' permission. Regards, Dirk

Optimisation fun and games

We (http://www.ekit.com/) have a popular website, and it's hit fairly hard (around 550k hits since the start of May, and with the summer holidays just starting, we're expecting it to skyrocket). I've therefore been working on ways to get Zope to go as fast as possible. Here's some hints for others who are running (or are expecting to run) high-volume Zope sites: 1) ZEO clients - we have about 9 of them, spread over a number of CPUs. We'll be putting in some more real soon. 2) Two apache frontends using FastCGI to the ZEO clients. They have an on-disk cache which serves up images (using rewrite rules to trap image URLs before they are sent to Zope) meaning Zope can do more important stuff than serve up static binary files. This is currently in testing and halves the average page load time. We don't have a real loadbalancer set up for the apaches, we just serve up different domains (we have many) from each. Watch the max number of connections per apache though - we've had to up it several times. 3) Several uses of RAM caches in Zope - the stylesheet, the sidebar HTML chunk and the front page content HTML chunk. Use the CallProfiler to isolate calls that change very little between users. RAM cache those. 4) CallProfiler'ed up the wazoo. Lots of CallProfiler analysis and fixing of hotspots. We managed halve our average page load time just doing this. Just thought this might be interesting :) One very interesting thing to note though is that the webmail part of our service is done in PHP. It's running on the same machines as the apache frontends. It doesn't seem to struggle at all. Not that we'd ever dream of writing something as complex as ekit in PHP :) Richard

exploring sessions

one of the most common requests now a days (I've gotten over 10 requests in the past 3 days) is to provide PostNuke-like functionality that says: x registered users are online y anonymous users. of course this information is calculated using SESSIONS. I've only used SESSIONS for limited things. Now I'm trying to answer these peoples questions. And its pretty frustrating. I think I'm looking in the right place. but continually get nothing. here is my function that I am assuming would return *all* session information currently. I'm using Python2.1.3 w/ Zope2.5.1 sessions=app.temp_folder.session_data trees = [item[0] for item in sessions._ring] print [len(tree.keys()) for tree in trees] #always gives me 0 for each key also.. something strange.. [item[1] for item in sessions._ring] does not return any id that are present when I say (in a Python Script) print context.REQUEST.SESSION return printed I see an id but its much longer than any of the ones in the print [item[1] for item in sessions._ring] statement. I am exploring SESSIONS using interactive python. I also dont see where context.REQUEST.SESSION.set('somekey', 'some value') is done -- where in the source is this actually done? ~runyaga

ZClass Products question - sub-classing

Hi, How do I determine the classes I should subclass when creating a ZClass object? I know what my new object is going to do generally, but how is the design decision made regarding which Zope base classes to sub-class from. We're obviously talking about interfaces and what the new object is expected to do. As a newbie, I know the names of the base classes, but have little understanding of what their interfaces allow them to do. Where do I get information about this? As an example: In the book "Zope Bible" page 478, the authors provide a simple application of FAQManager ZClass. The reader is told to sub-class from ZClasses: ObjectManager and OSF: Folder classes. Display logged-in username

Hello, I'm running into problems trying to display the name of a user who has logged in. I use a frameset and in the top frame I want the username to be displayed. Therefore I use <dtml-var "AUTHENTICATED_USER.getUserName()"> which works fine as long as I'm inside the Zope management interface. It also works fine if I let only authenticated users view the frame page by granting VIEW and ACCESS CONTENTS INFORMATION rights to them only (and NOT the Anonymous User). However, as soon as I let Anonymous Users view the frame page (simply acquiring all permission settings), I get 'Anonymous User' from the above <dtml-var ...> statement whether I'm already logged in or not (I let users log in by letting them change their password on two protected sites). Is there a way to display the username on a non-protected site (which also works outside the Zope Management Interface)? If not, how can I find out if a user has already logged in or not? Any help is greatly appreciated. Martin

ZMI Editor Corruption

I edit my Zope sites primarily on my OS X system, occasionally using Win2k. Yesterday, I began noticing some unusual crud showing up in the Python script files I was working with on OS X. The first thing I noted was that the first few characters of the first line of a script had just disappeared. I went to a text file copy of the script on my local drive and copied the missing characters, went back to Zope and pasted them. Instead of the pasted characters showing up, I'd see several unprintable characters. You know, little rectangles, symbols, etc. I must have spent 15 minutes with the stupid thing trying to isolate the problem. I even re-copied the entire script and pasted it. It never got any better. Finally, I deleted the script, created a new object of the same name, and then pasted in the file on my disk. That appears to have worked. Is this documented behavior? Is my data.fs file perhaps corrupt? Any insights?

Actually saying "don't cache the body of the pages at all" is a simple way to make sure this is not screwed up.
