Your performance will degrade if you do this; however, you get the benefit of being able to run a second Zope instance (either a full-blown instance, or a maintenance application using Zope.app() in a python automation script - useful for backup, cron jobs, etc); for example, we build and tear-down tempoary Zope instances to make changes to content in the odb over ZEO, and any memory leaks or other problems from such changes die along with the temporary Zope instance. Doing work out-of-process like this also integrates better with cron jobs. So, in summary, on a single box+cpu your reliablity stays the same, you performance likely goes down (a little bit), but you gain some flexibility in being able to have multiple Zope processes access the odbject database without contention. On a setup with multiple boxes (or multiple CPUs if you have CPU affinity guaranteed), you will get increased performance as well. ZEO's main advantages are in scaling out. For increased reliablity with ZEO, you need multiple nodes in a cluster of boxes running Zope/ZEO-client instances, and the ability to load-balance between them and take dead-nodes offline. For increased availability on the ZEO storage server, you need to replicate to multiple ZEO storage servers (which you can do with DirectoryStorage - http://dirstorage.sf.net) You still want to run a proxy server in front of Zope in a production environment (Apache or Squid, I prefer Squid) to get better security and performance from page caching. ZEO works well alongside this, not as a replacement for this type of setup (in fact if you have multiple nodes, Zope 2.6+ supports ICP, which will allow Squid to appropriately load balance a bunch of ZEO client nodes). dtml acquisition

Hello All, I'm fairly new to zope, so please bear with me on this question. I have a file, buried in: /site/dir1/file1.html This file calls a python script located in: /site/ssi/choose_template Which then calls: /site/ssi/dir1/template_section_x(param1, param2, etc..) With a few parameters. If template_section_x is a python script, or a page template, zope acquisition works, and accessing the parameters works. However, if template_section_x is either a dtml document or method, acquisition does NOT work, neither does accessing those parameters. I have tried '<dtml-var choose_template>' to recursively load another template section, and zope complains that it can't find the object. I have also tried '<dtml-var param1>' to access the parameters, and again zope complains that it doesn't know what I'm talking about. I am convinced that this is some sort of acquisition problem, because if I call: /site/ssi/dir1/template_section_x directory from the web, the acquisition of /site/ssi/choose_template works just fine. Do you have any suggestions about what I should try next, or an explanation of why this isn't working? Thanks in advance for the help, Andy

Wow. I only read the Zope Mailinglist as an archive and was surprised to find this type of an email. Defemation has no place on any public mailinglist. For obvious reasons I will not even try to go into the slander, and misinformation, FUD, etc posted by Hans Augustin about me and that chosen to use such a open forum to get rid of some of his issues with me. I dont even know where to start debunking what Hans wrote. If you have any questions or issues with anything beyond what I answered in this email please contact me personally and then this list can continue to be about Zope. Here are some facts: ZopeMag is in relaunch. And will publish regularly again in February. All previous ZopeMag subscribers continue to have access to ZopeMag and as we have posted -- will have their subscriptions extended throughout 2003 as anybody can read on the ZopeMag site. We have a new staff including a new editor. But many people who have contributed before / are writing articles / have turned in articles for the next issue. I take issue with his comments regarding the quality of articles for obvious reasons, Nico Grubert, Kristoph Kirchner, and Michel Pelletier (for example) wrote very well received articles. For our existing subscribers we have published several new articles in November, December and will publish more in January. Its clearly stated that we are not taking any new subscribers (therefore not charging anybody any money) and will not take any further subscribers until February. This has everything to do with: 1.) making good by our existing subscribers 2.) proper planning for regular publication If your in doubt regarding my sincerety, or those of the people I work with at ZopeMag - watch our progress. Actions speak louder than words. If your one of the many writers who has turned in an article submission and it *has been approved* by either myself or Peter Germain, but are now hesitant to continue writing because of FUD, please contact me for an advance. Is Zope the Tool for This Job?

Hi; A recently retired programmer has taken me under his wing and we're bidding a government contract together. His background is low-level languages and databases whereas I'll be doing the high-level stuff and the Internet applications. The job involves building an intranet that must be secure and an extranet: both of which access common records through a database (probably MySQL). This is for the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). My partner was running out of town when he grabbed me to tell me about this, so I only jotted down what was essential for my involvement. It includes: * Ability to pay for any traffic violation online * Fee-based title record search * Ability to view/print records of past transactions * Ability to print official receipts online * Provide online registration approval and payment * Ability to change profile information * Ability to request personal DMV driving record * Ability to support multiple languages * Make online appointment schedules * Renew driver's license online * Capable of efficiently handling millions of records It also includes the ability for law enforcement officials to access records, communicate the same to the court via VPN, etc. My question is, is Zope the appropriate vehicle (forgive pun) for such a project? has a folder the 'thumb.jpg' item?

Hello zopers! help me please! Please please ! I have some folders like this: grandfolder folder1 popup.jpg thumbpopup.jpg thumbpopup_over.jpg genericalFile folder2 popup.jpg thumbpopup.jpg thumbpopup_over.jpg genericalFile folder3 genericalFile !! note that the folder3 has NO *popup.jpg files !! I should check wether the folder_item has got the *popup.jpg files and draw this cell (<td></td>) ONLY if it has got them, otherwise I shouldn't. How do I check wether a folder contains a given file? i tried "folder_item['thumb.jpg']" but when it reaches a folder that doesn't contain a 'thumb.jpg' file it breaks! I tried has_key('thumb.jpg'), hasKey('thumb.jpg') with no success! Still, the error it raises when reaching the folder3 folder is KeyError. Thanks SO much ! Bye Catonano

Note: MySQL-python is an extension to python and ZMySQLDA is the Zope DA/product. I was installing MySQL-python and the Zope MySQL database adapter last week on a Linux box and encountered a few problems. Here's a few suggestions which might help you. First, you need to build and install MySQL-python as discussed in the README. Make sure you are using the copy of python that is driving Zope. Do you have multiple copies of python on your machine? I also found it necessary to edit setup.py to change the threadsafe option to NO (as I didn't have the mysqlclient threadsafe libraries for some reason). Once I had built and installed MySQL-python (with no errors), the ZMySQLDA product worked fine. You may also need to check you have versions of python and mysql (including the development libraries) which are compatible with MySQL-python (see the MySQL-python README). I have python 2.1.3 and mysql 3.23, which work fine. Hope this helps.
