Modifying a zclass property

Hello, I was going through the zope book's chapter "Extending Zope" and I implemented a method called feed (the animal in a ZooExhibit). This method is not in the book, and I coded it as: from DateTime import DateTime context.propertysheets.ExhibitProperties.manage_changeProperties(last_meal_t ime = DateTime()) return context.index_html() This works, but my first (unsuccessfull) try was: from DateTime import DateTime context.last_meal_time = DateTime() return context.index_html() This gives an error: Error Type: TypeError Error Value: attribute-less object (assign or del) Why is last_meal_time not an attribute of the instance? In another method, isHungry, from the book, I can retrieve its value: if (DateTime().timeTime() - context.last_meal_time.timeTime() > 60 * 60 * 8): What's going on? Also, is there any difference between using container and context for an instance of a ZClass? Thanks, Fernando

Keith, You could probably achieve everything you stated using Zope and a few add-on products (Also freely available). Do note that this would require development time on your part (Better they pay for your time than for someone else's software, right? :) Zope could provide the security infrastructure, web interfacing capabilities, and database connectivity at a bare minnimum. A few things to keep in mind will be how to index the excel and word documents for searching ... On a UNIX type platform, there are some tools, though not necessarily super-reliable. Maybe on windows you can have better tools available to you (Using the Python/COM interface for example). I've never used an RDBMS to store entire files, so how I'm not sure how to interface Zope to a database that uses BLOB's or something of that nature, though I'm sure it can be done, someone on here can probably help you with that. I would recommend you thoroughly research Zope and the "Products" to see if a combination of existing zope technologies will do the job for you. And although what you describe is doable, you may not be willing or have the time to go through the learning curve and so on ... But then the less one spends on software, the more they can spend on consulting/customization ... Also, you may find once you have learned how to leverage Zope that you will want to try and use it/recommend it for future clients ... Good luck! When he clicks on one link, he will then see the document (through the web browser) and it could be a WORD or EXCEL document and he could have the option to download this by clicking a download button. He could then alter this document in WORD etc (depending on the document itself) and then upload this to the same database on the intranet so that it replaces the old one. This would work very much like Livelink ( www.livelink.com <http://www.livelink.com> ) Ideally it has to be a system that is easy to use especially by someone not used to IT. Hi, We use eRoom an online collaboration tool, that is exactly what you need (although it has way more feature than just reading word or excel), the only thing is we pay almost 5000 $/month for a 100 users license.... one time downloads

Hey fellow zope fiends. I've got a little project I'm working on that involves setting up multiple one-time downloads. I'm curious if anyone out there has done something similar that would like to share ideas and or code. My concept was to have all the files in a secure directory somewhere. Make a temporary directory somewhere with a random id "oahnw3487cfyawcry7baw385vbyawy348vyaw" or whatever... Set the directory name and a flag into a db somewhere. Then after the download is complete (or after a certain amount of time, delete the dir and the files. Anyone have something like this already? Learning Zope, Question re ZODB, classes

Hi all, I'm trying to build a simple contact manager app with Zope as a learning exercise. Companies, contacts, events. So: I created three folders, one for Companies, one for Contacts, one for Events. I added properties to each folder relevant to the type of object (e.g. cmp_name, cmp_address, con_firstname, con_lastname). I grok the DTML and am thinking I need to be looking more at ZPT, but I can muddle my way through either of those. Here's where I'm stuck: now that I've created my "objects" (folders), how do I address them from Python scripts for add/edit/delete functionality? I can see in the sample apps how to p_changed=1 to save the current object, but how about a new one? I can't save my object if I don't have one yet.... Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated. Even if just a pointer to a sample product that illustrated add/edit/delete functionality... TIA, Jeff

Question on Zope and including generated HTML content

I'm new to Zope so be gentle plez :) I getting my feet wet in Zope and I have a question about getting pre-existing HTML content that is regenerated auto-magically at specific time periods into Zope. I basically have a directory called /usr/local/www/orca (and some other areas) whose HTML content is automagically regenerated every 5 minutes. Basically, I'm hoping Zope can feed up this content up but I don't know how to "include" this content in my Zope workspace. I'm hoping this content doesn't have to be "pulled" into Zope. Just hoping Zope will simply push the content out when requested. I looked through the Zope documentation somewhat but I don't know exactly what to call this so I'm not sure where specifically in the FAQs or docs to look for this. Any thoughts for a newbie appreciated. -- Sean O'Neill

How can I capture the url of a form submission for future use?

I have a form which returns sql queries to another frame. the frame query acts as a second form query to an image which is presented in the same frame. i want to be able to then split the frame into 2 to review the original sql query . I hope to put a button on my original form which splits the 2nd frame into 2 and presents the image on one side and the sql query on the other. I can do this statically by putting the urls of the 2 pages into a frame. How can I capture the url of the form submission to do this dynamically? is there a better or simpler method. thanks

Product Question :: How are support emails handled?

We have a small site, which generates about 10-20 support emails a day. These are either technical 'I can't remember my password', business 'please send me an application form', or Ezine related. Basically, three different people handle these emails at three locations. Currently we triplicate the email and forward it to all three participants, assuming that we as responsible adults will process the messages we are responsible for. I would like to have some form of package which would handle these mails, and keep track i.e. know that every email was processed. Ideally, such a system would also support entering our telephone issues and some simple, template responses. My question is ... what package are people using to track their support emails? Is there some super package that has sorted this all out years ago? I was directed to a package called perldesk, which has most of the functionality I require. However, it is CGI/perl based. Customizing or Hooking Access Control

I have a bunch of classes and objects that have a boolean 'active' attribute that gets set on and off variously throughout my code. I also have a 'View Inactive' permission that I use in some of my own object listing methods. But what I really want is to be able to control the AccessControl validation. I would like to be able to say that if an object is active (its 'active' attribute is on) that someone who has the 'View' permission can visit it. If the object is inactive, however, I would like to be able to say that someone who doesn't have the 'View Inactive' permission can't visit it. It would seem that this could be fairly easily accomplished with something like manage_beforeDelete, manage_beforeValidate for example, where I can reject the validation before the rest of the checks are made. Niether the docs, nor googling, nor reading the source, nor pestering #zope has yielded anything so far so here I am pestering the list. Any ideas? Thanks.
