Ah, I'd wondered whether I could safely do that ... Just never really knew exactly how tied to a version an instance might be ... There could be changes in the ZCML for zope.conf for instance? ... Which is why I decided to to do it this way. Good to know the option is there though ... Maybe I'll do that next upgrade. But I wouldn't take that approach at all. One nice thing about instances is that you don't have to tie them to a particular release and you shouldn't have to edit anything when you upgrade. What I do is this: 1) install zope in a versionless directory, e.g. in your example /var/zope 2) cd /var/zope and create your instance, e.g. in your example: /var/zope/bin/mkzopeinstance.py and name the instance something like: /var/zope-instance (again, no version number) 3) mv /var/zope /var/zope272 4) ln -s /var/zope272 /var/zope Having done all that, your future upgrades will be easier. E.g. when zope 2.7.3 comes out, you can install it in /var/zope273 and then do: ln -sf /var/zope273 /var/zope and you're done. Yup, or maybe when you re-edited zope.conf you missed something. Another common cause of such a symptom is that you're trygin to start as root without having it configured for it. try starting it with "runzope" instead of zopectl, you'll get output to the terminal indicating the cause of the problem. cmf's suitability for complex, customised workflows

Hi, I'm looking at designing a workflow management system using zope. I've had a look at CMF and from what I can tell, it seems to be very useful in designing workflows for web portal sites like in Plone. But I fear that I'm looking for something more than web publishing. My workflow involves - 1. receiving input articles (MS Word docs, text, etc) through ftp 2. some 14 stages of processing using various Win32/Mac apps 3. each processing stage done by dedicated well defined teams 4. extensive report generation and activity logs 5. hold associated meta information (emails, other tidbits) with every article The output of one stage has to flow into the next. Task queueing, prioritising, etc are essential for intelligent workflow scheduling. I don't find these features in Openflow/DCWorkflow/etc so I think I'm better off developing a customised zope product to suit my requirements. Is it easy to customise CMF to suit arbitrary workflows such as mine? Will I have any advantages if I build my Zope product using CMF over vanilla Zope? Can someone throw any light into this issue? - Raja

Ok, I went into the new /var/zope272-instance/etc/zope.conf and changed the two lines: %define INSTANCE /var/zope-instance %define ZOPE /var/zope to %define INSTANCE /var/zope272-instance %define ZOPE /var/zope272 and start the new version of Zope, which appears to start and run, but cannot be called via http-- I just get "This page cannot be displayed." Ugh. Upgrade is always so confusing. I'd write this up if I knew how to do this consistantly. I have Zope 2.7 and python 2.3 running fine on Fedora Core 1 Linux installed in: /var/zope and /var/zope-instance With plans to upgrade, I downloaded Zope-2.7.2-0.tgz and expanded the file. ./configure --prefix=/var/zope272 --with-python=/usr/bin/python2.3 make make install Then it asks me the directory where I want my zope instance. Do I use my old zope instance, or create a new one? I choose to create a new one in: /var/zope272-instance Setting up the admin user and password. Then, making sure the old Zope is shut down, I got to: cd /var/zope272-instance/var There is no Data.fs Thinking this might be a problem, I try to start the new zope cd /var/zope272-instance/bin ./zopectl start And zope does not start... So I copy my old zope.conf into /var/zope272-instance/etc and copy my old Data.fs into /var/zope272-instance/var And attempt to start the new zope, which starts. However, looking at the ZMI control panel for version information only reveals: Zope Version (unreleased version, python 2.3.3, linux2) I ps -ef to look at the Zope process and see this: root 1329 1 0 15:06 ? 00:00:00 /usr/bin/python2.3 /var/zope272/lib/python/zdaemon/zdrun.py -S /var/zope272/lib/python/Zope/Startup/zopeschema zope 1330 1329 95 15:06 ? 00:00:05 /usr/bin/python2.3 /var/zope/lib/python/Zope/Startup/run.py -C /var/zope-instance/etc/zope.conf I.E. both the old and the new Zopes seem to be in use, and despite createing a new instance, Zope is using the old instance. So I'm pretty confused here. Can anyone explain where I went wrong? Maybe upgrade instructions should be made a part of the zope book? Upgrading is an ongoing problem, at least for me, because I never really know how to do it right. Apache Authentication Problem

We currently have an applition that uses apache to serve alot of large files out of the filesystem (650MB each). I would like to convert the web interface over to zope to unify our site. I would prefer to keep the large files in the filesystem, primarily because we already have tools to manage them there. I also am very comfortable with apache serving these large files, and really do not wish to put this task up to the ZServer. I currently have zope setup behind a VM in apache. I have created a simple product that lists the files and creates the links to the files served by apache. I am able to integrate this info into our site very nicely. Problem... Since zope is not serving the files, I cannot prevent users from accessing them. I can control access to the links, but if you cut and paste the URL apache will server them to anyone, without even logging into zope. Any Ideas? Thanks, Will Smith

psyco-1.2 and Zope-2.7.2-0

Dear all I've recently installed the latest versions of Python 2.3 and Zope 2.7.2 successfully in our RHEL3.0 (latest version of RedHat Enterprise). To increase response time and optimize Zope with SpeedPack, I have installed the latest version of Pysco-1.2. But I've having problems when I re-start Zope. As soon as I remove pysco-1.2, Zope seems to work OK.
