Hi all! Zope 3 clues for getting started

We're considering Zope 3 for some new sites and for re-factoring some existing projects. Initially, we want to use it as an authentication engine for the existing sites and then then it will control the new sites as they come online. This is early stages (I haven't managed to install Zope 3 yet) so we have some reading to do but I wonder if I could get some answers to a couple of simple questions: 1. I assume the Zope 3 authentication engine is at least as capable as the Zope 2 one in that you can assign roles to users and require roles for a page to display? 2. Is it possible to keep the users' passwords in clear text so they can be emailed if the user requests it? 3. Where is the API documented that we call to check if a user/password combination is valid? 4. Where is the rest of Zope 3 documented? I've found this http://www.zope.org/Wikis/DevSite/Projects/ComponentArchitecture/FrontPage/… but it doesn't seem complete. Alternate Forms of Authentication

Hello all, Just getting into Zope and loving it! I do have a question about the basic authentication that Zope uses... I have a login page (ZPT) and would love for Zope to display that page instead of the basic auth dialog when it determines it needs to authenticate. Is this possible? Is there a Product that does this? I have looked at the PluggableAuth and related Products but they either don't seem to do what I want or I can't find enough text to determine what would fit my needs. Hi Jonathon, I will adjust my code. I have written some Python code but very simple tasks and would like to do more. I don't program that often. I work for a school system in Connecticut. So if you have an example of what your are talking about I am willing to try it. Importing a site with missing products

I need to duplicate (for testing) a site currently running on Windows on to Linux. This isn't a big deal. I've done the reverse direction without grief. However, on this occasion, I want to change the database connector from MS SQL Server to (mxodbc) to PostgreSQL (zpsycopgda) . Having exported the live site, I am unable to import it again in the test environment because of the following errors: WARNING ZODB Could not import class 'ZopeConnection' from module 'Products.mxODBCZopeDA.ZopeDA' INFO Script (Python) Some of your Scripts have stale code cached. Since Zope cannot use this code, startup will be slightly slower until these Scripts are edited. You can automatically recompile all Scripts that have this problem by visiting /manage_addProduct/PythonScripts/recompile of your server in a browser. Although the first error is only a warning it appears to be fatal and the import doesn't complete. I also tried following the advice on the INFO message but was told there were no scripts to update. What I'd like is for the import to complete so I can sort out the database connectors. Anyone any suggestions? The live site is running 2.7.6-final python 2.3.5 (win32) and the test site is running 2.8.4-final python 2.4.0 (linux) Thanks. -- Dale Strickland-Clark Riverhall Systems Ltd - www.riverhall.co.uk

Creating and displaying lists

Hi, I need to collect a list of student id numbers from one table so I can take this list, find them in another table, and display their names so their teachers can give them a score. I still like to use DTML but I do not know if I have the sequence-number in the proper format. How to best use Zope on SMP machines?

Hi :) I am to use Zope on a SMP machine which has 2 Xeon HT cpus (so 4 logical processors). As far as I know Python is not multithreaded, so the full potential of the server will not be used... How can I change that? I was thinking about running a couple of identical instances connected with ZEO and then using some load balancing between them. Do you think this is a good idea? How many instances should I use on a machine I have described, four? Are there any cons of such a configuration? I am open to any suggestions on how to use the machine's power best :-) Best regards, Maciej

Making Zope Accessible From Internet

I have successfully gotten a Plone installation to serve requests on localhost. Next, I would like to have it serve remote requests. I'm using a dialup account and therefore a dynamic IP. I have tried shutting down the firewall, manually entering the current IP of my machine in the YaST "Hosts" dialogue but Zope doesn't appear to get the requests. From what I've managed to partially digest about networking, this could be missing configuration in the routing tables, DNS lookup, network interface, etc. Etc. Etc. I don't think it's actually something as simple as the zope.conf file, or even anything I can learn from studying Apache configuration. Does this seem accurate? -TR

But I need to view it in a dtml-method. If you want to use plain vanilla html then you need to use the img tag to display the image. The img tag causes the browser to initiate a new http request to the server, therefore the server needs a way to return the image (ie. a path/id). There are two ways (that I know of, but there are probably other ways) around this situation: 1) store the image in a temporary folder (a folder that uses RAM not written to disk via the zodb); you need to be careful with memory utilization with this approach. 2) you may be able to send the data back in a javascript variable and then execute javascript on the browser in order to display the image (mulit-browser support will be an issue with this option) Jonathan
