ZCatalog capabilities
by nwingfield＠che-llp.com 11 Nov '03

11 Nov '03

I'm working on an enterprise document management system that needs highly flexible metadata structures - based on dynamic, customizable document types - and lightning fast queries on this metadata. The idea is to use the metadata associated with each document to dynamically generate flexible navigation routes and search interfaces (think iTunes or iPod) for any document type. Question is: is ZCatalog robust enough for this purpose or will I be better served by a relational data model? Up to this point, I have relied on Zope's object database, but I'm afraid that ZCatalogs are just not sophisticated enough to do the job. I would appreciate input from anyone with real world experience in ZCatalogs.

RE: [Zope] TypeError: 'in <string>' requires character as left operand

Yes, posting the traceback would be a good way for us to help show you where to look. Thanks, Derek Wilson -----Original Message----- From: Gordon Sullivan [mailto:gordon@gortek.com] Sent: Thursday, November 06, 2003 10:53 PM To: zope(a)zope.org Subject: [Zope] TypeError: 'in <string>' requires character as left operand Hi, I seem to have messed up my Plone real good. I'm not sure, but I think what I did to cause this was clicking the drop-down on the preferences screen for the editor. There was only one selection, 'None'. Now if I try to access /folder_contents for any folder, it gives me a Site error and the message: "'in ' requires character as left operand". I'm running the windoze install-shield version of plone [ (Zope 2.6.1 (binary release, python 2.1, win32-x86), python 2.1.3, win32)] on my computer at work. I just started showing my managers how cool Plone is today, so of course I had to break it... 8~[ I've googled and seen references such as these: (http://mail.zope.org/pipermail/zope-cmf/2003-April/018187.html) <snip> > The simplest thing possible is to add another check > on line line 174 in TypesTool.py > > if not self.allowed_content_types: return 0 </snip> And also this: (http://copilotconsulting.com/mail-archives/zope.2003/11509.html) <snip> Figuring this out was the hard part. Fixing it was easy: Zope provides a simple 'argument conversion' facility. Adding ':list' to the addForm HTML form ensures that the multiple field value(s) will always be treated as a Python list, even if the multiple field only had a single value. To illustrate the fix (similar to the one I made in my 'addForm' HTML), assume the line with the problem property was: <input type="checkbox" name="choices" value="choice_one" /> Change it to the following, which - via ':list' - ensures the Zope argument conversion of 'choices' so that it is always a list: <input type="checkbox" name="choices:list" value="choice_one" /> </snip> I've also read Issue 1336 (http://plone.org/collector/1336/ISSUE_TRANSCRIPT/view) of Issue Collector [Plone] that discusses this problem, and now I remember experimenting with the 'Allow Discussion' checkbox at some point... Maybe that's what caused it? I'm not sure what to make of things because I'm pretty new to the guts of Zope and Plone. Whatever I did to cause this problem I did from the user interface of plone, not the ZMI or editing python files. If it will help I can send the traceback from the Site error log. Does anyone know what the fix for this is? You might also want to check out www.zope.com - Zope4Intranets seems to kick some butt. I think it does just about every thing you'd want. Check out the flash demo on their site. For lightning fast text searches, especially for advanced contextual features, you'll likely be best served with a database designed for that purpose. Thunderstone.com has one you can test for free, and quite reasonable license terms for the whole deal. Everything about it is tuned for fast, contextual text searches, on a wide variety of document types. They've got lots of big customers too, so support for performance tweaking is definitely there. <truth>Not even a customer, yet. Just seems an up-and-up product line that looks really good.</truth> =Paul _______________________________________________ Zope maillist - Zope(a)zope.org http://mail.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope ** No cross posts or HTML encoding! ** (Related lists - http://mail.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope-announce http://mail.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope-dev )

RE: [Zope] modify source code, change manage method

Further research indicates that the product is actually "Emmix Gene" which is a software package for Linux which is "...available freely for NON-COMMERCIAL use only.". Now, I still have no clue where Zope fits in, because all that's there is a bunch of elf binaries for Linux. Here's the URL http://www.maths.uq.edu.au/~gjm/emmix-gene/ - It all seems to point back to the same guy though, Geoff McLachlan, Professor of Statistics. Thanks, Derek Wilson -----Original Message----- From: Dylan Reinhardt [mailto:zope@dylanreinhardt.com] Sent: Monday, November 10, 2003 9:58 PM To: Jenny Edmondson Cc: Zope Users Subject: Re: [Zope] modify source code, change manage method On Mon, 2003-11-10 at 20:25, Jenny Edmondson wrote: > However, in our system. Might be just a coincidence, but you might want to ask this guy: http://www.maths.uq.edu.au/~gjm He seems to have something zope-ish that uses this same software: http://www.maths.uq.edu.au/~gjm/data/emmixgene.bat > I have looked into the 'Emmixgene', but can't get the information I > wanted. > Maybe I don't know what exactly I am looking for. Hope you can give me some > advice. Beyond finding someone who might know what you have there, I'd give some serious though to extracting the contents of the site with wget and starting over with a clean install of Zope. Sorry that's not much help, hopefully someone else is better informed. Hi, I am using Debian stable and have installed the Zope 2.6.2 binary because I want to use Plone which in not packaged for Debian stable. Zope runs as as a user called zope from /usr/local/dc/zope. Zserver works fine on its own. CMF-1.3.3 installed along with CMFPlone-1.0.5. Debian stable has python 2.1.3-3.2 and apache 1.3.26-0woody3. Everything looks good but I can't get it to work with Apache. Spent many, many hours trying. Should I be trying to us pcgi or fastcgi? Can someone please show me some howto's? Thanks, Andy

RevisionManager on Windows
by Sebastian Krollmann 11 Nov '03

11 Nov '03

Hi, is there anybody who has used the Revision Manager Product on windows yet? In the product description it says it's for all platforms, but as paths are manipulated by the posixpath module I have some doubt. I get also the 'not properly configurated' feedback when I try to add an instance to the zope on my win box. (zope 2.6.2, win xp, wincvs 1.3.13b) any hints, experiences etc are most welcome, SK
