Hyperthreading is only virtual processor not physical. In Linux with smp kernel that know HT features you get only 5-30% increase in computing power depends on kind of computing. So you could be quiet with Zope, if Zope will be boound in CPU0 then system consume power from CPU1. > Say you have a dual-processor HT machine, running two Zope. If you want best available performacne for low price (ie., does not use processors targetted for servers), use dual P-III Celeron CPU instead of dual P-4 with HT, you will get much more performance with this oldies but goldies... I must have apply my patch for internationalizing zope for my charset (windows-1250). Search Zope howtos for name "lukesh". Here is a TGZ, where are all changed zope system files. Now zope works fine, but before them it is sometimes mixed codepages if you use different browsers to fill data (ie. MSIE4 and MSIE6). But it is for Zope 2.5.1, newer Zope has some property to set charset but I dont know their name and parameters. Try to search mailinglist. Regards, JL.

Zope Processor binding and Hyper Threading
by zhimin＠iss.nus.edu.sg 05 Sep '03

Hi, On a multi-processor machine running multiple Zope instances, it's known that each Zope/Python process should be bound to a single processor to increase performance. If you have a dual processor machine running two Zope, setting the affinity is easy - one processor per zope. Now we have processor with Hyper Threading (HT) technology, how do you set the processor affinity for maximum performance? Say you have a dual-processor HT machine, running two Zope. You'll get 4 virtual cpus: 0, 1, 2, 3. 0 and 2 are on one physical processor; 1 and 3 are on the other physical processor. You can bind: 1) Zope1 to cpu0 and cpu2 ; Zope2 to cpu1 and cpu3 2) Zope1 to cpu0 and cpu1 ; Zope2 to cpu2 and cpu3 3) Zope1 to cpu0 ; Zope2 to cpu1 4) Zope1 to cpu0 ; Zope2 to cpu2 Which one will give the most performance? Will the switching of Python's global interpreter lock between two virtual cpus on the same physical cpu slow down the system? Another way is to run 4 Zope instances on the dual-processor HT machine, and bind one Zope to each virtual cpu. Will this configuration perform better? Thanks! Regards,

User groups
by Etienne Labuschagne 05 Sep '03

05 Sep '03

Hi all, Is there a product available that would enable me to make user groups in Zope and assign local roles to the group, rather than the individual users. I want to use this in a multi-party CMF portal. I want to create a group for each party (be that a company, organisation, whatever) and then assign user, reviewer, etc. local roles to the group instead of each user. I would be easy enough to write this so that the group object handles the individual user local role assignment and removal, but something a bit closer to the Zope security system would be preferable. Thanks Etienne

Cannot pack Data.fs, Permission Denied error
by Jon Whitener 05 Sep '03

I (still) cannot pack my ZODB via the Web. This has been vexing me for months. I get this error: Error Type: IOError Error Value: [Errno 13] Permission denied: '$ZOPEDIR/var/Data.fs' I am running Zope on port 80, so I changed the ownership of the $ZOPEDIR/var directory to root. Zope is started as root, but with the "-u zopeUser" option (yet the first zope process is still owned by root (see below) is that right?). Are there some other permissions I need to change to be able to pack the database via the Zope Management Interface? (Changing all the contents of var to root ownership did not fix.) Here are my data: [root@zopeServer var]# ls -ld drwx--x--T 3 root root 4096 Sep 3 17:44 . maintaining consistent security settings across cloned sites
by Dennis Allison 05 Sep '03

05 Sep '03

I'm looking for a tool that will help maintain security settings, having been burned a couple of times. What I need is: 1. A tool to traverse a site and build a database of security settings that must be set for each of the various roles. Ideally this would remove redundancies and, perhaps, raise warnings when settings look strange. 2. A tool to apply said database to a site which is similar but, perhaps, not identical in structure--that is, some extra folders(and enclosed material) might appear in one site and not in another. 3. It would be nice if the security settings database could be read and edited off-line so they could be reviewed and corrected as a unit. 4. It has to be able to handle proxies. 5. It has to be able to handle roles beyond the usual Anonymous, Authorized, Manager, and Owner. It's OK to demand that both sites have the same user defined roles. Anyone done anything like this?
