Zope 2.5.2 vrs 2.7b2 for speed
by BZ 04 Sep '03

04 Sep '03

So I have been reading about how Python 2.3 is about 25% faster than older pythons and I thought I would try it out on some Zope goodness. I compiled Zope27b2 with Python2.3 and started doing some benchmarks. I tweaked a bunch of settings like what servers to start up, debug mode, interval check times but with all of that I could get Zope to max at about 60 requests per second using Apache Bench with 25 concurrency and 500 requests. I went back to my handy dandy Zope 2.5.2 installation and tweaking it I could get it to serve up at about an 85-90 RPS. For these tests I had nothing else running, I ran them more than a few times (for caching to catch up) and shutdown and restarted the servers to make sure there was nothing bad in one run. So is this a Zope27b2 thing? Is it a Python2.3 thing? Am I just testing too many different scenarios so it is not a good test? All of this on my MacOSX 1GHz G4, 2 GB of ram and a 120GB 7200 RPM WD SE drive with 8MB of cache. Here is a typical result with 2.7b2: bash-2.05a$ ab -c 25 -n 500 http://10.0.1.2:8080/index_html This is ApacheBench, Version 1.3d <$Revision: 1.1.1.9 $> apache-1.3 Benchmarking 10.0.1.2 (be patient) Server Software: Zope/(Zope Server Hostname: 10.0.1.2 Server Port: 8080 Document Path: /index_html Document Length: 3014 bytes Concurrency Level: 25 Time taken for tests: 8.529 seconds Complete requests: 500 Failed requests: 0 Broken pipe errors: 0 Total transferred: 1604000 bytes HTML transferred: 1507000 bytes Requests per second: 58.62 [#/sec] (mean) Time per request: 426.45 [ms] (mean) Time per request: 17.06 [ms] (mean, across all concurrent requests) Transfer rate: 188.06 [Kbytes/sec] received Connnection Times (ms) min mean[+/-sd] median max Connect: 0 0 0.0 0 2 Processing: 176 415 70.8 407 733 Waiting: 176 415 70.8 407 733 Total: 176 415 70.7 407 733 And this with Zope 2.5.2 bash-2.05a$ ab -c 25 -n 500 http://10.0.1.2:8080/index_html This is ApacheBench, Version 1.3d <$Revision: 1.1.1.9 $> apache-1.3 Server Software: Zope/(Zope Server Hostname: 10.0.1.2 Server Port: 8080 Document Path: /index_html Document Length: 3164 bytes Concurrency Level: 25 Time taken for tests: 5.085 seconds Complete requests: 500 Failed requests: 0 Broken pipe errors: 0 Total transferred: 1700895 bytes HTML transferred: 1585164 bytes Requests per second: 98.33 [#/sec] (mean) Time per request: 254.25 [ms] (mean) Time per request: 10.17 [ms] (mean, across all concurrent requests) Transfer rate: 334.49 [Kbytes/sec] received Connnection Times (ms) min mean[+/-sd] median max Connect: 0 0 0.1 0 2 Processing: 152 247 34.8 240 586 Waiting: 150 246 34.9 239 586 Total: 152 247 34.8 240 586

Caching custom ZClasses
by Bart Hubbard 04 Sep '03

04 Sep '03

Hello, I've created a set of custom ZClasses, and can't associate them with a cache manager. I see there isn't a baseclass available in the ZMI that corresponds to the 'Cacheable' class in 'cache.py' in the OFS directory of Zope. I suppose I could subclass another class that is cacheable, like DTML Document, but will that just cache the DTML Document portions of my class? I just want my ZClass to be cacheable, so ideas are welcome. much thanks, bart

... maybe I used the wrong English word in my email called "Vice posting policy". The correct word is probaly "Wise". At least my intention here is good :) Børge

Confusion about thread safety
by andre 03 Sep '03

03 Sep '03

Hi, after reading several things about thread safety, i'm a little bit confused by the fact that the words threads and connection are used in too various contexts. So i'll ask a simple question. With a basic Zope server, without any other DB, what happens when two different users want to commit changes made to the same object at the same time ? are the two requests, two different threads ? ZODB speaking.

VS: A disappeared cookie..
by Børge Kjeldstad 03 Sep '03

03 Sep '03

Hello :) ..I try to send this message again, as I received no answer. Maybe it disappeared in the mess with the large virus attack some days ago. To personalize a website I use cookies. That is; when a person chooses a link, a cookie is set like this: <dtml-call expr="RESPONSE.setCookie('guest', 'C')"> Now, this cookie is used to either include or not include a table of contents on all of the following pages that I (or actually guest C) visits: <dtml-if expr="REQUEST.has_key('guest', 'C')"> <dtml-var site_map> </dtml-if> The <dtml-var site_map> looks like this: <a class="map" href="&dtml-URL0;?expand_all=1">Show all</a> <br> <a class="map" href="&dtml-URL0;?collapse_all=1">Hide all</a> <br> <dtml-tree expr="topics"> <a class="map" href="&dtml-absolute_url;"><dtml-var title_or_id></a> </dtml-tree> (topics is here the folder containing all the pages that guest C may visit) This works fine untill guest C presses some of the links generated by the <dtml-tree>. If he or she for instance presses the Page 1 link, he comes to page 1, but page 1 does not include the <dtml-var site_map> even though page 1 still has the same <dtml-if> statement: <dtml-if expr="REQUEST.has_key('guest', 'C')"> <dtml-var site_map> </dtml-if> It looks to me as if the cookie has disappeared. Or have I misunderstood the hole concept of the REQUEST object? What could be wrong? Thank you very much :) Børge Kjeldstad

Sort problem
by Davis Mr MR 03 Sep '03

03 Sep '03

Hi, I'm trying to create a list of titles, sorted alphabetically, but want to sort ignoring initial stop words. I've set up an index for title_or_id, which works fine, but "The Resource" ends up listed under T. I've tried using a Lexicon, but these seem to only be able to be used for Text Fields, which can't be used in a sort. Is there another way to do this? Cheers Michael Davis

RE: [Zope] Can't build resource file for PCGI on Zope 2.7b1

I think you are taking liberties with what I said. First, the server is not *THE* live webserver for Ford's corporate intranet, it is one among *many* and a rather minor one at that. If it were one of the main ones, there is no way they would let me run Zope one it (not an accepted "corporate standard"). In fact, the systems people here have been quite accommodating by even allowing me to run Zope. To answer your question, access to the machine *is* heavily restricted (I never indicated otherwise). That isn't the point. The point is that a (properly configured) named pipe *is* more secure than a port (even a localhost port) because the permissions can be controlled at the system level. So it seems reasonable (to me) for somebody to want to use a named pipe. In any case, I'm not looking to get into an argument about how well-reasoned our corporate security policies. I'm just trying to understand what the purported "more appropriate" alternatives are for PCGI. > Chris -- Mike

No module named GenericUserFolder
by Andreas Tille 03 Sep '03

03 Sep '03

Hi, I wanted to follow the hint about customizing the cache of an ZSQL method given in the Zope Book at chapter Relational Databases. When I try to press the Advanced tab of a ZSQL method I get: Error Type: ImportError Error Value: No module named GenericUserFolder Regarding to http://www.zope.org/Members/Zen/GenericUserFolder it seems that this is a remainder from some previous code which should not really belong to Zope 2.6.1 which I'm using. Or is there any other problem? Kind regards Andreas.

Charset HTTP header switched to UTF-8. Bug or feature ?
by Gilles Lenfant 03 Sep '03

03 Sep '03

Hi, There's a strange thing in a iso-8859-1 (natural) charset site Zope 2.6.1 powered... A form is summitted (POST) to a TTW python script. At the end of the script, after form validation ... <sample> return context.sometemplate(param1=value1, ...) </sample> The "sometemplate" is published with this HTTP header : Content-Type: text/html;charset=UTF-8 When nowhere in my scripts/templates, I stated to use that charset. You can imagine the ugly things that are displayed :-/ I found a workaround: forcing the HTTP header of the response... <sample> REQUEST.RESPONSE.setHeader('Content-Type', 'text/html; charset=iso-8859-1') return context.sometemplate(param1=value1, ...) </sample> Is this behavior a bug or a feature ? Note that with older versions of Zope (2.3.3) I didn't need to force the charset header like this. Thanks in advance --Gilles
