Zope 2.6.2 on RH9
by Dennis Allison 21 Jul '03

21 Jul '03

Anyone running production on the RH9 system with all the available upgrades and patches? I know there have been problems but rumour has it that it is now stable and playing well with Zope. Can anyone confirm from their direct experience? RH9 implements CPU affinity which may be useful for performance tuning in a SMP situation. Has anyone had experience with Zope using the new affinity calls in the 2.5 kernel?

printed editions: The Zope Book for 2.6/2.7, Dieter's opus
by Dennis Allison 20 Jul '03

20 Jul '03

Are there plans to put out a paper edition. I, for one, don't like reading documentation off screens... And the on-line book has a lot of new, useful material And Dieter, how's your book coming? The draft has proven very helpful--it would be nice to have a printed version.

[ANN] TextIndexNG 2.0 final released
by Andreas Jung 20 Jul '03

20 Jul '03

I am pleased to announce the final release of TextIndexNG 2.0. What's new in TextIndexNG 2.0? - Relevance ranking of search results added. Searches are now ranked using an extended cosine measure. The cosine measure is based on a vector model and calculates the document "score" based on the frequency of the query terms inside the document result set. - Much faster phrase/near search: the old implementation of TextIndexNG had to perform a very expensive job at query time when phrase/near search was performed. Re-using the !WidCode module of !ZCTextIndex made this operation less expensive. - Left-truncation added: TextIndexNG can be configured creation-time time to support left-truncation (means you can search for "*suffix") - optional auto-expansion support: This optional feature also to get better search results when some of the query terms could not be found. The index expands a query term "foo" to "foo*" if there was no hit for "foo". This expansion is currently global for the index. This feature will be available on a per-query basis in a later version. (Auto-expansion will be extended in a later version to search for similar terms) - improved HTML converter: now using Chris Withers "Strip-o-Gram" module instead of the Strip-Tag-Parser - added converter for text/sgml - Similarity search (soundex, metaphone, doublemetaphone) dropped and replace with a more general approach and language indepedant approach using the Levenshtein distance. - internal code cleanup, more unittests - range searches like "Fi..Foo" - substring searches "*substring*" - reduced conflict errors caused by the lexicon/storage implementation - no longer conflicts with TextIndex V 1 installations Download: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=50052 http://www.zope.org/Members/ajung/TextIndexNG/ Project Wiki: http://www.zope.org/Members/ajung/TextIndexNG/ Note: there are currently no binary packages available for the TextIndexNG extension modules. They will be provided at a later time.

SQL abstraction layer for the ZopeDB ?
by Frode Danielsen 20 Jul '03

20 Jul '03

I realize the zope database is not an relational database. Still I wonder if there exists a Database Adapter which emulates this. The point is, that I currently would like to use the Zope database for storing my data, but I would like to have the possibiliy to maybe later change to a relational database. This change would be much easier if there existed an Database Adaptor which stored the data in the zope database. Mvh Frode

escaping unicode in id
by Giuseppe Bonelli 20 Jul '03

20 Jul '03

Hi all, has someone a quick&dirty recipe to clean-up/escape unicode chars (utf8) from strings to be used as object's id ? A simple encode('ascii') doesn't work if the string contains high chars. TIA, --peppo

creation-ism issue

the usual incantation for creating an instance of a product is folderishobject.manage_addProduct['product name'].manageaddXXXXX( ...) I want to create programmatic instances of the ZUBB product which has a meta_type of 'ZUBB Folder' confirmed by looking at the code. The product seems to be properly installed, appears in the dropdown menu, and creates instances through the ZMI. But, the following script fails: request = container.REQUEST RESPONSE = request.RESPONSE # add in an instance of the ZUBB product # we work here obj = container.restrictedTraverse('/agilediscussions') print obj print d_id, d_title p = obj.manage_addProduct print p p = obj.manage_addProduct['ZUBB Folder'] print p #p = p.mange_addZUBBFolder #print p #p(id=d_id, title=d_title) return printed with Traceback (innermost last): Module ZPublisher.Publish, line 98, in publish Module ZPublisher.mapply, line 88, in mapply Module ZPublisher.Publish, line 39, in call_object Module Shared.DC.Scripts.Bindings, line 252, in __call__ Module Shared.DC.Scripts.Bindings, line 283, in _bindAndExec Module Products.PythonScripts.PythonScript, line 314, in _exec Module Script (Python), line 10, in createDiscussion - <PythonScript at /agilediscussions/createDiscussion> - Line 10 Module AccessControl.ZopeGuards, line 90, in guarded_getitem Module App.FactoryDispatcher, line 26, in __getitem__ Module App.FactoryDispatcher, line 29, in __bobo_traverse__ Module App.Product, line 66, in _product AttributeError: ZUBB Folder What's can be the problem? -d

Re: [Zope] Zope hangs with no visible reason

It was running in dos box (w2k terminal server) under not closed session, nothing selected in dos box, minimized. It was run sometime month, sometime 2 days. And it was run pound proxy before zope. In Linux, I was run zope without pound one month without problem, then I install pound for better feel of stability ;-) And finally, my zope now is 2-100 times faster on worst hardware than in windows! 2 times for cataloging and heavy computing requests (like sitemap tree with all objects and his properties), an cca 100 times faster for static files (eg., images) delivery. Normal pages is 4-10x faster. Manytimes, zope under windows does not give me some images in design complex pages. So I am happy that I run Zope on Linux. Regards, JL.

Calling zsql from a page template
by Roy S. Rapoport 19 Jul '03

19 Jul '03

I'm missing some fairly basic syntax here, I'm sure, but the zsql chapter seems to only cover DTML. zsql_movienames is a zsql method returning simply a 'Name' column and requiring no arguments. I'm calling it thus: <table border="1" width="100%"> <tr> <th>Movie name</th> </tr> <tr tal:repeat="item zsql_movienames"> <td tal:content="item/Name">Some Movie Name</td> </tr> </table> But I'm getting Error Type: KeyError Error Value: zsql_movienames Any pointers to a doc that will cover what I'm trying to do? This is as elementary as it gets ... -roy

Re: Zope 2.6.2 Beta 4 Released
by Josef Meile 19 Jul '03

19 Jul '03

> I don't get your point. Both releases have nothing in common in terms > of release scheduling. Check the Zope 2.7 wiki on dev.zope.org OK, I think I understood, you'll continue supporting 2.6.x till a stable version of 2.7.0 will be released, won't you? I was a little bit confused because in the past when Zope.org released a new branch they didn't continue developing the previous one and you should migrate to the new one in order to have the latest bug fixes and features. But now because of the impact of the new features, that's what I could guess, they decided to continue maintaining 2.6.x and improving 2.7.x till a stable version is released. So, it is better to continue using 2.6.x for production and 2.7.x for testing, isn't it? > for the new features in 2.7. Zope 2.6 is in the maintenance phase. That means 2.6.X will contain mostly bugfixes but no new features. Btw. > bugfixes are usually applied to the current development branch (which is > actually Zope 2.7) *and* on the the maintenance branch. Btw. you should read doc/CHANGES.txt Yes, I've already read it, but I didn't find bug Collector #964 on 2.7.0a, but I guess it's because of the schedule differences Thanks for your reply, it explains some things I didn't understand, Josef
