Large virtual hosting solution
by Eron Lloyd 11 Jun '03

11 Jun '03

Hello all, I'm in the process of developing a massive state-wide solution using Zope. I have almost 70 organizations with the same Web application needs, and was thinking about using one Zope machine to do virtual hosting to each of the individual accounts. Each account would be an instance of a custom product I'm working on (and will release the source once I'm done if anyone is interested), which will have to be customized to each group. All instances would have their own subdomains, and could map to a top level domain if they choose. Much of the back-end will rely on MySQL, with a database for each instance. Is it possible to develop a product like this in such a way that I can globally update the product code and have each instance get those changes? I've never attempted anything of this scale before...I imagine I'd need to produce a Web farm of ZEO clusters and sit it behind Squid or Pound as well. Any suggestions? Anyone know of a Zope hosting solution that could do something like this (granted, on a very tight budget). Thanks!! SQL DNS Headaches
by Linn, Daniel B - CIEP-3 11 Jun '03

11 Jun '03

I have created the system DNS, and when I create a new ODBC connection it shows in the list. I select it and save the page. When I try to open the connection I get a 404. I've tried using a DNS-less connection with this string: DRIVER={SQL Server};Trusted_Connection=Yes;DATABASE=Communique;SERVER=******;Description=SQL on Zope But I get an invalid connection string error. I can't seem to take off the description with out generating a 404. In any case, I've never connected successfully. I've been told about using external methods, but I'm charged with showing my department how easy Zope is. I don't think using an external method qualifies. This has got to be just a silly error on my part. Thanks in advance for any help. Dan Linn 503.230.3753 work 503.515.3593 cell Bonneville Power Administration US Department of Energy

rh9 + zope 2.6.1 = no response
by Grzegorz Jasko 11 Jun '03

11 Jun '03

Hi Zope Users! After the upgrade of my box from redhat 8 to redhat 9 my zope 2.6.1 doesn't work any more. I didn't installed zope rpms, so all zope binaries are as beftore. The box is a smp i686 with 2.4.20-8smp kernel and glibc 2.3.2-11.9. When I connect to http://mybox:8080/ I got sometimes the 'zope welcome screen', but mostly not. Trying to access sth else the server does not answer as well - the browser is waiting infinitely for the server response. There is no error message in the logs or somewhere else. Starting the server as user zope by call ./start & I can see followed processes: [zope@mybox zope_dev]# ps auxf USER PID %CPU %MEM VSZ RSS TTY STAT START TIME COMMAND zope 1305 0.0 0.2 4532 1392 pts/2 S 12:36 0:00 | \_ -bash zope 1343 0.1 0.6 4364 3380 pts/2 S 12:36 0:00 | \_ /opt/zope_dev/bin/python /opt/zope_dev/z2.py zope 1346 1.0 2.9 49632 15168 pts/2 S 12:36 0:05 | \_ /opt/zope_dev/bin/python /opt/zope_dev/z2.py The output is the same as for working server under rh8, but a browser gets no response making (as root) strace onto pid 1346 gives this: ... gettimeofday({1055327969, 572131}, NULL) = 0 fcntl64(16, F_SETFD, FD_CLOEXEC) = 0 select(17, [9 13 14 15 16], [], [], {30, 0}) = 1 (in [16], left {30, 0}) recv(16, "GET /manage HTTP/1.1\r\nAccept: im"..., 4096, 0) = 353 gettimeofday({1055327969, 574106}, NULL) = 0 futex(0x8bd83d4, FUTEX_WAKE, 1, {1, 1}) = 1 futex(0x8bd83c8, FUTEX_WAKE, 1, {0, 1}) = 1 futex(0x8bd667c, FUTEX_WAKE, 1, {1, 17}) = 1 futex(0x8bd6670, FUTEX_WAKE, 1, {0, 17}) = 1 futex(0x8bd8240, FUTEX_WAIT, 2, NULL) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily unavailable) futex(0x8bd8240, FUTEX_WAKE, 1, NULL) = 0 select(17, [9 13 14 15 16], [], [], {30, 0}) = 0 (Timeout) select(17, [9 13 14 15 16], [], [], {30, 0}) = 0 (Timeout) select(17, [9 13 14 15 16], [], [], {30, 0}) = 0 (Timeout) select(17, [9 13 14 15 16], [], [], {30, 0}) = 0 (Timeout) select(17, [9 13 14 15 16], [], [], {30, 0}) = 0 (Timeout) select(17, [9 13 14 15 16], [], [], {30, 0}) = 0 (Timeout) select(17, [9 13 14 15 16], [], [], {30, 0}) = 0 (Timeout) select(17, [9 13 14 15 16], [], [], {30, 0}) = 0 (Timeout) select(17, [9 13 14 15 16], [], [], {30, 0}) = 0 (Timeout) select(17, [9 13 14 15 16], [], [], {30, 0}) = 0 (Timeout) Originally the server was started by root by calling zope8580 script (quite the same as 'start' script, but with extra -u zope parameter). The process list is looking this way: [root@mybox zope_dev]# ps auxf USER PID %CPU %MEM VSZ RSS TTY STAT START TIME COMMAND root 18550 0.0 0.1 3752 708 pts/1 S 16:11 0:00 initlog -c /opt/zope_dev/zope8580 8580 root 18551 0.2 0.6 4368 3380 pts/1 S 16:11 0:00 \_ /opt/zope_dev/bin/python /opt/zope_dev/z2.py -u zope -P 8500 -D zope 18557 1.5 2.9 49680 14896 pts/1 S 16:11 0:04 \_ [python] ^^^^^^^^^^^^ making strace onto 18557 pid I get [root@mybox zope_dev]# strace -p 18557 trace: ptrace(PTRACE_SYSCALL, ...): Operation not permitted detach: ptrace(PTRACE_DETACH, ...): Operation not permitted I've downloaded from ZopeSite and installed once more the linux binaries for 2.6.1 - the same result. I've downloaded 2.6.1 sources, compiled and installed - no success as well. Always no response from server without any error message. I ran out of ideas what could it be and how to fix it. I'm wondering if its the only case of strange behavior rh9+zope2.6.1 Any help or suggestions would be appreciated Grzegorz

Re: [Zope] Re: store an image within a session

That's true, the expression <img alt="..." src="..."> is plain HTML, but in my case if you write the following thing in a DTML document: <img src="name_of_a_python_script"> the browser doesn't call the python script to display the image. How can I put this problem right? Many thanks, Tibo. > > >Obviously, something like: > <dtml-var data_of_the_jpeg_file> >doesn't dsiplay an image but the content of the jpeg >file, so do you know how to fix this problem? > > >>This is an interesting request. Almost certainly, >>you do not want to do >>this, but if you do, you will want to >> >>... >>3) create a python script that returns the image: >> >>if REQUEST['SESSION'].has_key('jpg_image'): >> img = REQUEST.SESSION.jpg_image >>else: >> img = container.substitute_image.data >> >>return img >> >>4) call the method from an img tag: >><img alt="my image stored in a session" >>src="python_script_name" /> >>Note that you'll have to calculate height and width >>on your own... >> You're right -- that's not how it's done in DTML. But pay attention to what's going on in the example anyway. That's not a templating language of any sort: it's plain HTML. It's making the Python Script the 'src' attribute of an 'img' tag. The browser will retrieve and display it. --jcc __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo! Search - Faster. Easier. Bingo. http://search.yahoo.com

Zope feature list
by PieterB 11 Jun '03

11 Jun '03

I'm currently working on updating the FreeBSD port for Zope/Plone. The list of features that was referenced in the FreeBSD port was outdated (references to a non-existing zope.org:8080 URL). Here is the old list: Database Integration Content Management SQL and HTML in Harmony Builtin Objects Multiple Data Sources Document Templates Publish Databases Web to Objects Application Development Integrated Object Database DTML Scripting Managed Through the Web External Methods Direct URL Access to Objects Please help me to improve this list. What features should definitly be mentioned (e.g. zope page templates, web dav support, products such as plone, ...). I was surprised I couldn't find an elaborate feature overview on zope.org or zope.com. Am I missing something here? The only info I could find was the http://www.zope.org/WhatIsZope and a pdffile on http://www.zope.com/Products/AboutZope Pieter

Zope Best Possible Installation
by Børge Kjeldstad 11 Jun '03

11 Jun '03

Hei, Say I wanted to use Zope and I had enough money to buy a fairly good server to run it on. Further, say I could choose the OS I wanted (Linux or Microsoft) And further, say I wanted Zope (some time in the future) to communicate with some other programs that I am yet not aware of (these could be an sql-database, some math-programs and more). What would then be the best Zope installation I could make? Would it be Zope with Linux and Apache? (This might be an hopeless question, but well try :-)) Best regards! Børge Kjeldstad

combining form variables and URL values
by jwsacksteder＠ramprecision.com 10 Jun '03

10 Jun '03

I'm quite sure how I should be thinking about this. I have a page creates a report based on parameters that are in the URL. This is important because the user must be able to bookmark the location with the parameters included. For the sake of this example let's say the url looks like this- http://www.myserver.com/news/index_html?UID=11234;skin=modern On that page 'UID' and 'skin' are available to dtml-var. I have a form on that page that take 2 additional input fields from the user(using formulator if that matters). I need to then pass all four values into a dtml method for validation, then into a zsql method. Unfortunately 'UID' and 'skin' are only in the namespace of the initial page, thus this doesn't work. I think the solution would be to make some hidden fields in the form and set their values according to the values on 'UID' and 'skin'. Then once the form results are passed through the validator all 4 values will be available to the zsql method. Is this the most direct way to accomplish this goal?

can't start zope after upgrade Please help !!
by P tiLux 10 Jun '03

10 Jun '03

Hi, I use zope with a Debian testing/sarge. The last running version of zope was 2.6.1-4. The last upgrade proposed was 2.6.1-7 . The post-install script of zope didn't work and the install process failed, but I tried to end the install process by hand... The other packages of the server are up to date. This new version of the zope package changes the location of apps, so I created a new instance (zopectl create), moved the data files to the new location /var/lib/zope/instance/default/var/ , restarted the server. The zope server seems to be running : the port 9173 is open and listening, and I can see the connection with netstat -ap when I try to connect it. The issue is that no page is served : when I ask for a page, I receive 0 byte in answer (the connection times out a _long_ time later). The /var/log/zope/default/Z2.log file is still empty. I don't see any error message. One zope process and several python2.1 processes are running. My production data are on this server and I don't wand to loose them... I have a copy of the data files before crash, but I don't know if I can reuse them. Could anyone help me to restart zope ?

Mathematics, fortran an zope
by Børge Kjeldstad 10 Jun '03

Hei, Qeustion 1: Say I had som program (written in for instance fortran), that did som advanced calculations (like for instance calculating the resistance of a ship hull in water); Would I then be able to use zope to make som web interface to this fortran program? Question 2: I know it is possible to do mathematics with python. But is it also easy to combine zope with more specialized math programs like for instance Matlab? Thanks! and best wishes Børge Kjeldstad
