Newbie Question: dir(...)

In using Zope (and Plone), I'm always amazed at how extensible the system is. I've managed to create several special macros in Plone for creating some nice helper "boxes" for my slots. BUT, the problem I always have is that while the system has lots of functionality, I never know what it is. Lots of Zope sites have comments about "see the Zope Book", but I find "the Zope Book" rather frustrating because it seems to cover things only at a conceptual level and doesn't really provide a good reference book. For example, I was working (by example) on developing a nice little box for one of my slots that would list the "Files" in the current folder (and only in the current folder). Since I was converting this from the "newsBox" macro, I saw roughly what needed to be done. I managed to find some document somewhere that covered the details of searchResults, but what I was struggling with mostly was something very simple: At the point where the macro is run, there is a variable called "here" available. Ignoring the background questions for the moment (who sets this?, is it set for all documents?, what is the "type" of this variable?), I had a very simple question. I know I have this variable, what can I do with it? I just wanted to find out the parent object and then, ultimately, the path of the parent object so that I could use that as an argument to searchResults. It took me forever to finally come up with: path='/'.join(here.aq_parent.getPhysicalPath()) because I didn't know about aq_parent, I didn't know about getPhysicalPath(), etc. It would really have helped me to know what the attributes and methods are for each of these objects. I tried using "dir", e.g.: <div tal:replace="python:dir(here)"></div> But this generated an error because it said "dir" was undefined. Is there a simple way, when working within the Zope framework, to quickly determine what methods are available on an object? Looking at the wealth of Zope code out there, I feel I must be missing something that other people are using in developing the code. Either there are some development tools are some great sources of documentation that I'm unaware of?!? -- Mike

How to get a catalogware object's ZCatalog

Hi there, I have a catalog aware object "myobj" in the ZODB which is cataloged in a ZCatalog "MyCatatlog". Is there a way to get the ZCatalog in which myobj is cataloged if I have the myobj object ? Storing Data inside Zope

Just how bad an idea is it to use Zope object Properties to store numeric/text application data? My first Linux (or otherwise) Zope app will be a gratis case tracking system for a friend's small (himself plus 3 staff) law office. Other than setting up new clients and cases (maybe a few a day) the most frequent data changes will be adding new activity detail records which are small. Only a couple of reports are run each day. Overall transactions will be few and small. My initial idea was to use MySQL or PostgreSQL for data storage. While developing the framework of the app I want to be able to store/retrieve a few records for testing. Since every bit of Zope (HTML, DTML, Python, etc.) is new to me, every time I start to do something I have to learn something else first. I'm not complaining - that's how I expected it to be - but if I could sort of skip over learning ZSQL and defining/using MySQL tables right now and stay focused on my input forms and reports, then come back to data storage later, that would really nice. My plan is to use scripts for all I/O which would allow me to change I/O methods later without changing whatever code is calling the scripts. I considered using text files or XML data files within Zope for testing but in each case I'd have to write the parsing and update-data code myself which would take time and be thrown out later by the final ZSQL code. Then I thought about defining some object that takes Properties, adding Property names/types for (example) the client master record and saving that as a data template (not ZPT). Then each time there was a new entry I'd make a copy of the template and update the Properties using Zope's built-in APIs without ever giving the data objects any content. I think I could also use Zope catalog features for data searches. Without knowing more about Zope the only downside I see is the data being encapsulated in the app tree, therefore requiring any data to be purged before copying/exporting the app somewhere. It will also make the Zope object grow but adding data is going to make any database grow no matter which is used. I can also imagine there might be a philosophical point about keeping the data outside the Zope object. But is it a bad idea for some practical reason? That's a question with two branches. The first is, is it completely bad and I shouldn't do it even temporarily for testing? The second is, is it bad for production but okay for development/testing? If there isn't a good reason for not doing it then it would certainly be nice to be able to stay in Zope for everything so that only Zope would have to be installed to move the package to new machines and so I can stay on track without having to branch off into data storage issues. I was thinking about using the File object as my data object since it supports Properties. Any other suggestions? Thanks, Tom P. FTP access and ssh-Port-Forward

Hi, I've got a problem with zope on Solaris system. I can access the ftp-Port from within the LAN (being either there or using ssh to connect to a server in the LAN) but not using a port forward for it. I can however use http-Portforwarding over ssh, but ftp-Portforwarding only gives me the possibility to login, the ls command "hangs" at entering Passive Mode. If I turn off passive mode I get error 425 Cant build data connection. Has somebody a soluting how to get ssh-forwarded ftp Access to Zope? Andreas -- You look tired.

External methods & persistance and thread safety

I have a Zope that is being used for content development. Much of the content is maintained in the local file system (e.g. CVS, temporary files, and the like). Some of the operations can take a bit of time. And I have a number of folks banging on the system at the same time. Much of the heavy lifiting is done by python external methods and calls to systems programs through the os.system() method. It all works swimmingly but for a couple of instances of anomolous behavior--the wrong file getting written, for example. It could be a program error, but I don't think so. I'm wondering if I am running afoul of some persistance or threading problem. (And to make things suitably complex, this is all running on a dual processor machine.) Any thoughts? -d

Why can't I get to Root Folder?

Playing with Zope, I've managed to break it. When I try to go to the Root Folder I see: Error Type: POSKeyError Error Value: 00000000000009e This was while playing with versions. 1) Any idea what I may have done to cause this? 2) How can I back out from this (the undo panel is letting me down here)? I guess I may be re-installing!
