But I can tell you the following: - it happened inside restrictedTraverse. I replaced that call with a quick, dirty and stupid iterative function using split + getattr, and the code worked well. - it was random. Sometimes the same call that worked fine a few seconds ago would hang the Zope server then. - right now, I cannot reproduce the error, even using the original restrictedTraverse call. Anyway, we changed our design and now we are using a single instance of a Product located at site root, so there is no need to access Zope from 'outside' the ZODB. I cannot tell what has changed in order to make this code work now. The database (FileStorage) was packed (and then we got some "Bad reference" errors); there were some __setstate__ methods not being called properly; some classes were improperly declared as descendants of both SimpleItem and Persistent; the machine running Zope was being used for other purposes at the same time (like CD recording). Maybe the problem had to do with some of these odd things, maybe not, but I can't tell. Gabriel Genellina Softlab SRL ------------ ¡Navegá y ayudá a un chico! Zope (X)3 FAQ
by Stephan Richter 05 Apr '03

Hello everyone, I just updated the Zope 3 FAQ at: http://dev.zope.org/Wikis/DevSite/Projects/ComponentArchitecture/FAQ While we have already many great questions (and hopefully good answers), I would like to receive some more. I will make a serious effort in the next week on answering all the questions that have been submitted either to me or as comments on the Wiki. Did you set up your "STUPID_LOG_FILE" environment variable in the start script? If so, then see the log file for information. Perhaps you could see a python exception or something else that gives you a clue. Regards, Josef

Is there a way to have users add themselves to a role?
by Russell Hires 05 Apr '03

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hello... I'm playing with plone, but this is really a zope question. At the moment, I want to give my users the ability to choose whether or not they receive an email when a certain object type is published. The way I'm looking at doing this is to allow the user to choose whether they have a certain role or not. Naturally, these would be custom roles, but I want the user to decide (without my intervention) on if that person wants to have that role. Anyone have any ideas on doing this? Thanks! temporary document
by Jerome Alet 05 Apr '03

Hi there, I'd want to be able to create a file object (PDF) in the ZODB, which would be downloadable during say one hour or half an hour, and then which would disappear automatically. Is it possible ? If yes then how ? I've tried to create it in the temporary folder at ZODB's root, but it doesn't disappear (maybe I've done something wrong) I've searched the archives on zope.nipltd.com but without finding what I want. thanks in advance. Trees in ZPT and zpt_examples
by Isokangas, Erik HTC/DE/FRA 05 Apr '03

Hi, (sorry for the cross-posting with zope-forums.org, I didn't realise that it doesn't post directly to this forum) I have been looking for a method to display a tree structure in ZPT, where the tree is built from simple, hierarchical data (rather than folderish objects). The tree_menu example looked the most promising but I can't seem to get it to work. I'm getting the following error... Request URL: http://linux3:8080/Examples/zpt_examples/tree_menu.pt Exception Type: IndexError Exception Value: string index out of range Does anyone know why this 'out of the box' example isn't working? I'm on Zope 2.6.1. Is this the best method in ZPT or is there a tree widget for ZPT (like dtml-tree)?? I would like to implement this tree widget under a Plone site. Would there be a conflict (due to cookies) with the Plone navigation slot? Thanks for your feedback, Erik. Traceback... RE: ZPT vs DTML problems

I was able to figure this out. I needed to change <span tal:replace="container/conent"></span> to <span tal:replace="structure container/conent"></span> Thanks anyway, Jamie Jamie(a)brobus.net -----Original Message----- From: Jamie [mailto:jamie@brobus.net] Sent: Friday, April 04, 2003 6:34 PM To: 'zope(a)zope.org' Subject: ZPT vs DTML problems Is there something similar to tal:replace that applies any markup in the object you are replacing the tag with? Example: -index_html- <html> <body> <span tal:replace="container/content"></span> </body </html> -content- <h1>Hello World</h1> produces this when I view: <h1>Hello World </h1>

Zope Link Checker
by Niclas Kuehne 05 Apr '03

05 Apr '03

Hello! Does anyone know of a Zope Product that can report all broken links in a site? Or a python script that is easy to integrate. I found python scripts like "webchecker.py" and "linkchecker.py", but did not manage to integrate them directly into Zope. Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks for the help! Nic

RE: [Zope] Cautionary tale -- OSError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory
by Passin, Tom 04 Apr '03

[ John Ziniti] > > It then dawned on me that we do a lot of "os.chdir()" in our Products > to make sure we are in a directory we can write in. We also have > at least one Product that deletes it's working directory > after it is done. I think you should **never** change or depend on the current working directory, and you have jsut showed why. Instead, your code modules can discover their own directory, and you can use relative paths from that. This works very well for external methods - if you put their code into a package so that __file__ can return something -- and it should be possible for products as well. When you arrane things like this, you never have to cd and then retstore the right directory, and you can always be sure your code can find and write the files it needs. Cheers, Tom P
