ECMAScript 262 - Mozilla, IE5/6, and Opera tend to stick fairly close to this, enough so as to be considered ECMAScript compliant. So that if you pay attention to the standard that you can write code pretty much oblivious to what browser it's going to be implemented on. If a browser doesn't support a particular feature like array.push, it's more than likely that someone already has a free prebuilt crossbrowser script that fills the void with no fuss. Additionally if you're using javascript for the sparkly factor then your using it wrong, go use flash or java applets. WE use it in form validation, table sorting, row hit highlighting and client side pagination and creating lightweight user interface components like tabpanels. It works easily with about 5 major browsers and there's no "IF IE6" or "IF NS4" anywhere in code. My point is that NOTHING we have today works IDENTICALLY in every browser. IE will render font's one size and moz another and lynx another. If your criteria for using a standard is how identically it works in each browser then you won't be using any standard. MS WORD AUTOMATION - newbie

Hello all, I am trying to automatically convert MS Word docs after I have uploaded using WEBDAV/webdrive. I want users to be able to view the word docs with in the site once uploaded. Has anyone ever done something like this, your input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks TP

performance problems

Hi, during a training session this morning, I told the seven students to install Zope on their personnal account on a Samba server from their W2K workstations but to run it "locally" through the network. network is full-duplex 100 MBits/s, workstations are 1.8 Ghz PIVs with 768 Mb RAM, server is Bi-Xeon 2.4 Ghz with 1 Gb RAM, and a raid5 array, under Linux. When each student started his Zope instance, I found that performance wasn't impressive at all, and that Samba used a lot of CPU ressources. It worked though, and I see no error or warning in Samba's log files. Is it "normal" ? (this was the first time I used such a configuration, the room is brand new) Does someone use such a configuration ? What are the performances ? AI suspect something abnormal because I use Samba since 1996-97 and I don't remember having seen such a CPU ressources use. My office server is actually a PPro 200 Mhz with 128 Mb RAM and serves 8 stations without problems (not with Zope, though) On the other hand this may be that the way Zope uses the ZODB, particularly at startup time, is really ressource intensive on the Samba server. Could anyone report similar or different experiences ? Is there a parameter to change on the Samba server to improve Zope's performance ? Thanks in advance Jerome Alet

session_data Users Online?

Ahoi... Remark ahead, I know that "http" is a connectionless protocol, but does somebody know a hack to find out how many users are online in Zope!?! I cheked out the Session Modules in Products but can't find a Methode that works. For hints or a tutorial_link I'm very gratefully to you all. Oki, have a nice day and remember... Is Logout actually impossible? (ExUserFolder)

Is it just me, or is logout actually impossible? Once you're authenticated with ExUserFolder (on a subfolder), it seems near as dammit impossible to become un-authenticated - I've tried quite a few permutations (standard authentication & cookie based). This doesn't work: <div tal:define="dummy python:here.acl_users.logout(request)" /> Nor does this: <div tal:define="dummy python:request['RESPONSE'].expireCookie('__ac',path='/')"/> NB What should 'path' be here? Sure, you can redirect to a folder above the XUF acl_users, e.g. to the root: <div tal:define="dummy python:request.response.redirect('/loggedout')" /> but that doesn't stop the user going back to where they were and remaining authenticated. I've read in some places that it's all IE's fault, for not destroying the session info, but I'm using the latest version of IE, so that seems strange. Do PHP users have this problem too, or is it just Zope? I can get registration and login working just fine. It's just logout that's tricky.

Javascript, just like any other client side code, has it's uses (and abuses). Saying that Javascript is evil even in part because it can't be used by browsers like Lynx is equivelant to saying that CSS/Graphics are evil because the blind can't see them. Or that HTML 4.0 is bad because IE3 and NS4 don't implement it well. Yes there are alot of script kiddies and even professional designers out there that use the propritary extensions (both MS's and Netscapes) and cause sites to be inaccessible to certain users. I think instead of bashing the language we should advocate better use. Is that your intention? Anyway, lynx does not support IFrames, does it? So supporting lynx would rule out any frame-based apporaches. I'm only a newbie, so someone please correct me if I'm wrong here. I had the same problem formatting dates retrieved from an Interbase database, and ended up writing a python script (which I don't have to hand, sorry), which took in the retrieved date, convert it to a string, split the string into year, month, day, and then returned a string version of the date in the format I wanted. Something like: myDate=str(aDate) # Can't remember if the above was necessary, but if in doubt... year,month,day=myDate.split('/') dateString=month+'/'+day+'/'+year return dateString You then, instead of <dtml-var invc_date fmt="%m/%d/%y"> place <dtml-var "convertDate(invc_date)"> (This can be done better than this, but I am only a newbie, and it is off the top of my head, and all of my notes are in work!). The problem that will happen when attempting to hook an XBOX or any other computer for that matter to the TV is that unless the TV is Digital or sufficiently large (over 32") text will be nearly unreadable and the highest resolution you are likely to get is 800x600. I think that there's a whole host of other options for low profile PC's. Check out a site like linux-hacker.net. They talk about a bunch of lowcost easily modifiable (and some not so easily) computers that might meet your needs. There are also a bunch of all-in-one (some flatscreen) units like the gateway profile, the old Compaq 3060 was nice and could be modified to hold newer equipment but it's next to impossible to come by. Some of these can be found on e-bay and other sites for relatively cheap and they're easily portable. Also their are the new shuttle systems out that are about the size or a shoe box (sans monitor).
