RE: [Zope] ZODB vs Relational Databases

Thanks to everyone for all of the feedback. I am going to start by getting a product built to manage the metadata. By that time I should know zope well enough to determine which approach will be best for the OLTP data. Right now it seems like the RDBMS is the way to go however. Odd behavior based on allowed metatypes
by Stacy Roberts 11 Mar '03

11 Mar '03

I am in the process of creating container objects as a Python process. I want a result similar to the following structure. Resource Store - contains only Resource Folders Resource Folder - can contain multiple nestes Resource Folders and a Resource Source Resource Source - can contain only Resource Databases Resource Database - can contain only Record objects The Record objects have initially been developed as a stand alone product. My trouble begins in restricting the allowable meta_types to only one meta_type. From within my Resource Database, the factory method is not found. If I allow another metatype to be added, everything works fine. My Record objects can also be added to any other standard Zope object. I have even went as far as to place my Record product inside the Resources product. In doing so, I included a factory method for the top level of the Record inside my Resource Database class. The record is then added, but top level icons are lost. The way things are behaving for me have totally defied my understanding of how products operate inside Zope. Can someone help me understand what is going on? Why is the behavior different simply because I allow one vs. more than one metatype to be added? I would agree, since you seem to know RDBMS already. Use ZODB for metadata and other types of objects. This approach also allows access to the data from other, external applications. Or go with whatever gives you the "cleanest" application design. One of the things Python & Zope emphasize is that it's not about the raw numbers, it's all about ease of use, rate of development/deployment, application of logic, etc. Samir. And this is of course, just my $0.02. -----Original Message----- From: Dieter Maurer [mailto:dieter@handshake.de] Sent: Tuesday, March 11, 2003 01:33 To: mlong(a)datalong.com Cc: Zope Subject: Re: [Zope] ZODB vs Relational Databases Michael Long wrote at 2003-3-10 09:05 -0500: > Please forgive me if this is in a FAQ somewhere. If I have lots of highly structured data, I would go for a relational database and not store them in the ZODB. Pagination

I'm not sure where to start here, and I'm kind of new to Zope here, but I thought I would ask. How do most ZSQL generated lists get paginated? I haven't seen hardly anything pointing to a way of doing this. Maybe I'm just looking in the wrong area. I would like to know how to display a list of items with a page break that displays page numbers, something similar to this: (Prev - 1 - 2 - 3 - Next) I would appreciate any input on how someone else achieved this. Thanks :) -Brendan

RE: [Zope] prevent printing?
by sean.upton＠uniontrib.com 10 Mar '03

Uh, you can't do this. The best you can do is open up an html page in a new window without a menu, but someone smart enough is just going to right-click and print. You can likely output print-restricted PDF output (voluntarily obeyed by acrobat reader), but this would likely require you to install Adobe SDKs on your server, and use html2pdf or similar to render pages into PDF to deliver them. In other words, there is no easy answer, and even at that, you can't prevent people from saving those PDFs and emailing them half-way across the world. You need to create a custom application that uses time-bombed encryption and a proprietary viewer of your own devising. The reason most digital-rights-management applications fail miserably is because you can't really prevent the copying of bits no matter how hard you try. Sorry. assignment to form records
by Fernando Martins 10 Mar '03

10 Mar '03

I've a script who gets two parameters from a form: Code (int), Fields (record). In the script, I can assign to Code, say: Code = 1 but if I try, say: Fields.a_field = 1 I get the error: > Error Type: TypeError > Error Value: attribute-less object (assign or del) Do I need some special syntax for that or is it simply not possible (and why)? Regards, Fernando

ZODB vs Relational Databases
by Michael Long 10 Mar '03

10 Mar '03

Please forgive me if this is in a FAQ somewhere. I am writting an application that will be capturing financial information. If I use the ZODB and create expense and income objects to capture this information there will over a 1000 objects added a week. I will be tracking history, archiving data, etc. Is Zope the right tool for this type of application or am I better off creating the objects that this data is associated (companies, people, properties, etc) within the ZODB and using a relational database such as PostgreSQL to track the higher volume financial data. tia, Mike

Zope hangs
by Ria Marinussen 10 Mar '03

10 Mar '03

Hi, This weekend my Zope server stopped serving pages. The last entry in my Z2.log file was: 218.27.99.174 - Anonymous [08/Mar/2003:02:08:40 +0200] "CONNECT 65.54.166.99:25 HTTP/1.1" 404 264 "" "" Has anyone seen this kind of "attack" before. Is there a way to prevent it? Our zope: Zope Version (Zope 2.5.1 (source release, python 2.1, linux2), python 2.1.3, sunos5) Thanx, Ria Marinussen
