Applications that scale beyond thousands of objects in a single container can perform quite well, but only if you code your app right; you need to have the application take into account using the Catalog as much as possible to avoid excessive penalty for traversing to too many objects or relying too much upon ObjectManager (folder) interfaces for accessing multiple objects. Traversing to an object is expensive, if you add up many objects, largely because of security machinery and other concerns. Using cached data in the Catalog can help you avoid this performance penalty, even for applications that do nothing more than list items in a given folder in a sorted and/or batched manner. Tips: - Download and use the BTreeFolder2 product for any folder with many objects - Subclass BTreeFolder2, and back it with a ZCatalog, and associated UI - Assumes working knowledge of writing Zope Python Products - Use the catalog wherever you can, and only load the objects you need to access - Avoid ObjectManager methods like objectItems(), objectValues(), objectIds() on large containers, use a catalog to get the same results, which can of-course be filtered, sorted, and batched! Please help me with the following VirtualHost problem using of Zope behind Apache in the common way (Apache first (needed for other websites) zope behind it (should also drive several domains.)) About the Page template features

Hi, When tailoring the various Page Templates in a Plone site, I noticed constructs for which I didn't find any doc in the latest ZopeBook (2.6 edition) 1/ <tal:block ...> elements. 2/ <metal:block ...> elements 3/ The i18n namespace. Okay, I experienced some stuffs with these features and guessed their respective usage, but having a doc that explain fully their usage would be helpful. Thanks in advance. --Gilles

Authenticating with acl_users

Ive been looking through AccessControl/User.py to understand the validate() methods paramteres. Im not sure what to put inside the request, and how to do it. I have been testing around, but I can only manage to do authenticate(), but this only tells if the user is valid and has the right password. The thing is, I also want to set AUTHENTICATED_USER, but not sure how to to this, but I have the idea validate() does all this for you, if you pass the right parameters. I have been searching at zope.org and google.com for a long time now, but cant find very much useful. The only parameters I have put in the REQUEST are __ac_user and __ac_password, but I know I also need object value and physical container of the object, but dont know how to find this. /Sondre

Count User Logins

Hi Everyone, I've got a Zope application where users have to authenticate themselves to be able to view certain pages. Now I want to count the logins per zope-user (disregarding the actual user-request identified by their ip-addresses). Can this be done? -- Stephan

newbie: exuserfolder-question

hi all, i'm new to xuf (ExUserFolder), read all faqs, readmes, mailinglists (hopefully ;-) and still have two short questions: (i already posted this question last week to the exusermailinglist, but didn't get listed till now :-( 1. sources i already have a table for all my users. this table includes the basic login fields (password, roles, user name) /and/ the so called properties (email, street, etc.). as i dont't like the idea of changing this table i'm wondering if it is possible/ a good idea to drop the *propsource part of xuf and integrate my table columns into the *authsource part. or would that break the whole (idea of the) product? any hints? helpful ideas? 2. session-based login method as many of my users won't accept cookies: did anybody try to extend the cookie-based authentication by session-based authentication ? any hints or helpful ideas? any help appreciated. regards, seila -- +++ GMX - Mail, Messaging & more http://www.gmx.net +++ Bitte lächeln! problems with msie 6

Hi! I'm quite new to zope and I have a little problem with msie 6: I created a formulator form. When it is submitted a python script is called that validates the entries and then calls a zsql method that inserts them in a mysql table. With Mozilla, msie 5.X all works fine, but using msie 6 the entries are inserted two or three times. No error messages appear in the error_log so I have no idea where to look. (Zope version is 2.6.0, formulator version is 1.2.0) Any hints? Thanks in advance Thorsten Harms

Where is zope best practice?

Hi, I'm currently looking to the best way to develop zope application/products. I've been searching throughout the website and I couldn't find any documentation of the 'best practice' on developing a zope products. Besides this there are many limitation such as no proper IDE to be used to develop a product. I've heard of WingIDE but I'm not sure how helpful this could be in developing the Zope Applications/Products. I'm a Java programmer and attracted to Zope because of many small available applications. I've mastered Python in the last few days and looking forward developing Zope Products. But with little documentation, best practices and tools, I think, Zope won't be much helpful to me in building rapid and robust application. I have been always very keen in knowing Python and Zope. But something draw me back is the little/no documented best practice on developing zope products. In Java, if one develops an application using JSP (Java Server Page), one can use some types of framework such as Struts, Tapestry. Or s/he may uses JSP itself. There are also documented best practice in developing this JSP application such as pattern to be used and how you separate presentation, business logic and data. There are also many IDEs and other modelling tools that can be very helpful. >From so many tools, documentation, I am still in favour of developing a large application using JAVA instead of Zope or Python. I'm still keen to know zope further. Can someone help me to find out the best practice in developing Zope Products? regards, Heri
