suggestions on getting started
by Michael.Coll-Barth＠VerizonWireless.com 21 Jan '03

All, Does anyone have any suggestions for reading materials on Zope. I am not looking for books, rather, something along the lines of a spoon feeding. A 'Guido' like tutorial on Zope would be wonderful. I will be working with a group that already has a python/Zope/Apache/RH Linux application up and running. I don't want to drag them down with Zope related questions without trying it on my own. Yes, I did try Zope.org and zopenewbies.net. thanks, Michael

Missing pyexpat.so in Zope 2.6 binary for linux
by Johan Lübcke 21 Jan '03

21 Jan '03

Hi! When I have a PageTemplate with a non-standard content type (text/vnd.wap.wml) I get an error: -- 8< -- Site Error An error was encountered while publishing this resource. Error Type: ImportError Error Value: cannot import name expat -- 8< -- It works on the Windows version but on linux (Zope-2.6.0-linux2-x86.tgz) I had to copy the file pyexpat.so from another Python2.1 installation. Is there a better way to do it? (Would compile my own solve this?) And where should I report the bug? / Johan Lübcke

RE: [Zope] Zope and Apache

Can you explain why? The HOWTO I looked at (http://www.zope.org/Members/regebro/Zope_and_Apache/) specifically recommended this configuration for my requirement (I just want to expose my Zope website as a directory in my Apache website). > Use RewriteRules ("mod_rewrite") with "P" flag in Apache and > VHM in Zope. Pretty much everything I saw on mod_rewrite also involved virtual hosts (which I know little about, but am fairly sure I don't want). And I couldn't see how to translate the instructions for my simple case. If you can give me a bit more detail, that would help. To be absolutely specific, I have an Apache installation running on my PC on port 80. So http://localhost/ (or http://ukdcw5163/ or http:/123.45.67.89/ or whatever) I also have Zope on port 8080, and I'd like to be able to access the Zope site starting at http://localhost/Zope (or http://ukdcw5163/Zope or http:/123.45.67.89/Zope or whatever...) As I understand virtual hosts, and rewrite rules, they work based on the hostname used for access - as you can see, this is precisely what I *don't* want. Sorry to be pushy over this, but as well as wanting to be able to do this for Zope, I want to understand *how* it is done. I'm likely to be involved in an Apapche-based website which redirects to various places in a similar way to this, at some point in the not too distant future, and I'd like to get a head-start on the principles... As usual, references to good tutorial reading would be appreciated. Thanks again, Paul.

FTP
by D. Rick Anderson 21 Jan '03

I'm having a problem with the FTP portion of one of my zope servers. This server is hosting about 6 domains using VHM, but when I ftp into it, it drops me into one of the virtual host directories no matter which domain I ftp to. Let me clarify. I'll use example names. I have directory1, directory2 and directory3. They're all setup in the VHM as *.directory1.com/directory1 and so on. When I FTP to ANY of the domains, I'm put into directory3. Doesn't matter what username/password combination that I use. I can log in as the emergency user and it still puts me in directory3. I can log into ftp.directory2.com and it will still put me in directory3. I have 3 Zope servers running: Zope 2.6.0 (binary release, python 2.1, linux2-x86), python 2.1.3, linux2 RedHat 8.0 The other two are running virtual hosts as well, but aren't having this problem. Any ideas? TIA, Rick

Zope reference documentation?
by Patrick Price 21 Jan '03

21 Jan '03

Is there a book or a place where I can find: a: a DTML programmer's reference, or an API reference, or a TAL reference which contains ALL the objects and methods available to any of these scripting languages? The Zope Book doesn't have such a reference. What it has is very limited and not for a beginner. For instance, let's say I want to learn about something really basic, like what REQUEST.get does. I've searched the Zope 2nd edition book (searched the most likely 4 chapters where I thought I could find this information) and found nothing. I've searched Google on how to use "REQUEST.get" - nothing again that looks like a reference. I could probably find it mentioned in the cookbook in a snippet, but where's the book that has this BASIC stuff in it, indexed, with examples, along with all the other methods of the REQUEST object; and then all the other callable objects as well? Where is the basic Zope documentation? Don't say "The Zope Book" because that jumps from too-basic to extremely complex within one paragraph, and it is missing a comprehensive object.method reference with syntax and examples. There is a need for two Zope books - one to put the screenshots in (a programmer's reference doesn't need screenshots), for absolute beginners, and one programmer's / scripting reference with objects, methods, syntax, and examples. Maybe even three books, the last being the high-level object-oriented architectural python-related stuff that most people don't need to know to write scripts. <flame> Is it the intention of Zope Corporation to limit the use of Zope, by keeping easily understood and useful documentation away from the masses? It sure seems this way. This is my second or third attempt at learning Zope (without knowing Python - BTW, is that a prerequisite?) and each time I am frustrated by the lack of the type of documentation I can easily find for any other language (PHP, C) or a scripting reference (ASP, Javascript) or application framework (Midgard has excellent API documentation). I am amazed that since Zope is all-powerful, that it has not used to build a site comparable to, say, http://www.php.net/docs.php. The wikis are pathetic compared to other collaborative projectware and portalware (www.xoops.org) axisgroupware.org, dev.4arrow.com (a php-based Zope lookalike, although his documentation sucks REALLY bad). I've never seen a calendar in Zope comparable to something like MS Outlook's calendar, which I've seen in other portalware products. Is Zope not up to the task; or is it that nobody except the developers really know how to explain how it's used; or is it that nobody knows how to write documentation? Is it funding? Hell, if someone just copied the table of contents from the PHP site, and then wrote comprehensive Zope documentation around that, you might solve the Zope documentation deficit. And then you would have more people who understood it and all the benefits that would bring to the community. </flame> How people have learned Zope thus far with the documentation available is beyond me. It must be that I didn't grow up learning OOP in computer science like everyone does these days... -Patrick Price

Zope hangs easily.
by Jingzhao Ou 21 Jan '03

21 Jan '03

Hi, I am a newbie to Zope. I installed it on a Sun machine with Solaris 8. I used ./start & to get Zope running. However, it hangs easily. When some one downloads some pdf files, it will stop running. Also, I started the ftp server as well. However, whenever I connected to the ftp server, Zope will also stop running. Can any one tell me if I am missing some important steps? Thanks! I used Zope-2.6.0-solaris-2.8-sparc.tgz from www.zope.com. FYI, my server is running at neman.usc.edu:8080. FTP server is running at port 8021. Best regards, Jingzhao

Problem for extracting long text with zsql method?
by b.nguyen＠chime.ucl.ac.uk 21 Jan '03

Hi, I am having problem here. I am running Zope 2.0 in my machine with platform Win XP. I have succeed in connecting Zope to mysql database (which is currently held in another machine, Unix server) by using ZODBCDA-3.1.0b2-win32-py21. And A testing table called news has been created with following fields: +-------------+------------------+------+-----+---------+----------------+ | Field | Type | Null | Key | Default | Extra | +-------------+------------------+------+-----+---------+----------------+ | NID | int(10) unsigned | | PRI | NULL | auto_increment | | Name | varchar(100) | | | | | | Subject | varchar(255) | | | | | I then set up a very simple Zsql method as follow : select Name, Subject from news It works fine and will return all correct data only if the Subject value is not long, ie if Subject has value * This is just a test. It will work * This is just a test. This is just a test. This is just a test. This is just a test. This is just a test. This is just a test. This is just a test. Will return the following error Error, sql.error: None Because the news table is just for testing, it is rather small. It only has 5 rows of data in total. Hence, I have ruled out the possibility that the returning result is too big. But I could be wrong. It would be great help if someone could give me a direction to solve the above problem. Bonnie
