Exceptions in Python Script
by Kevin Gill 19 Dec '02

19 Dec '02

Hi, Can anyone point me towards documentation / howtos / information on handling exceptions in python scripts (scripts not 'external methods'). I have a core set of page templates that determine their content based on the traverse_subpath. Due to the inability of some browsers to understand the base tag, I have just re-implemented this logic python. However, I cannot handle the exceptions in python. Using page templates I can handle exceptions, but not using a python script. I want such logic as: pt = container.x return pt() except AccessControl.unauthorized.Unauthorized: return container.acl_users.redirectToLogin(request) except ... NotFound : .... except: ... But access to the python exception functionality is not available. Furthermore, access to the sys variables for exceptions are also not available. When I use page templates I have a variable called '_', and can do some nasty work .... error = _['error'] if str(error.type) == "AccessControl.unauthorized.Unauthorized": return container.acl_users.redirectToLogin(request) However, there is no _ in the python script. So I need to have scripts calling page templates calling scripts so that I can get the exception information. This is the sort of coding that makes Visual Basic look clean! This problem is so fundamental that I am sure there is plenty of documentation in the zope site. Unfortunately, I cannot find it. If anyone can point me to the HowTos or other documentation on this problem, I would be grateful. Thanks in advance, Kevin Gill PS - Remember the question is about python scripts. Please do not send me messages about external methods.

High CPU usage on ExtFile objects?
by Ben Chapman 19 Dec '02

19 Dec '02

Hello: We're running our law school web-site on Zope 2.4.3 (source release, python 2.1, linux2). Zope is running through Apache pcgi. Our Data.fs is about 130MB in size. In addition we have two large directories of external image/external file objects. Occasionally, we see CPU usage shoot to 99.9% when attempting to view large (up to 8MB in size) PDFs stored as ExtFile objects in these folders. The attempted display of the PDF then fails. The folders with the PDFs are on a local 10K RPM SCSI drive. We're using a linux 2.4.x SMP kernel with 2 PIII 500Mhz processors and 1 GB RAM. Load average when not attempting to display the large PDFs is something like: 0.79 - 0.64. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to improve performance for display of these PDF documents? chr(eval(self.myhex)) works in Python console, not in python product?
by Jeff Kowalczyk 19 Dec '02

19 Dec '02

If the following works: >>> class Foo: ... def __init__(self): ... self.myhex = '0x2a' ... def bar(self): ... print chr(eval(self.myhex)) ... >>> foo = Foo() >>> foo.bar() * in Zope's python console (2.1.3), But in a Zope Python product method the same sort of thing fails: Error Type: SyntaxError Error Value: unexpected EOF while parsing (line 0) (specifically, its a Formulator Form method, and the self.myhex is a stringfield property of the Form instance) is it because eval is restricted even in a python product? Restricting eval() would seem to be an necessary security step, just wanted to check to make sure that's what causes the syntax error. Thanks

Here is a snippet from my template: ...... <td><input type="checkbox" name="c_row" tal:attributes="value row/id"></td> ...... <a href="" onclick="document.forms[0].c_row.checked = true; for(i=0; i<document.forms[0].c_row.length; i++) { document.forms[0].c_row[i].checked = true; } return false">Select all</a> <a href="" onclick="document.forms[0].c_row.checked = !document.forms[0].c_row.checked; for(i=0; i<document.forms[0].c_row.length; i++) { document.forms[0].c_row[i].checked = !document.forms[0].c_row[i].checked; } return false">Invert selection</a><br> ....... This works well but I need c_row to be passed as a list of integers. In this form it is passed as a string or list of strings. A good replacement I tought to be the follow one: ...... <td><input type="checkbox" name="c_row:list:int" tal:attributes="value row/id"></td> ...... but in this case I dont now how to handle javascript. Davfs problems with Zope? davfs not working as well as cadaver or other clients
by Heimo Laukkanen 19 Dec '02

19 Dec '02

I think I am losing my faith with davfs together with Zope. I am using 2.6.0 Zope and Davfs 0.2.1. From moment to movent davfs seems to work ok, but after a time it seems to become unreliable - and unable to save files, create new files and sometimes even old files seem to get lost. I seem to be able to create from time to time new files with touch and pico - and even with emacs. But strange things start to happen later on. Saving a file again does not work ( ie. changes will never go to the server, eventhough the program thinks it saved the file ). I can remove files and create new directories ( folders ), but copying or moving files from filesystem to Zope seem to cause problems. And none of these problems happen with cadaver or using webdrive or teamdrive on windows. Any help would be appreciated. Below is more detailed description and info from logs. Here is what I'm doing. I have mounted zope webdav on /mnt/dav and have accessed the /mnt/dav with user that has appropriate rights to use the mount and the user whose credentials were provided with mount is a manager. /usr/local/sbin/mount.davfs http://127.0.0.1:8081/ /mnt/dav -o username=userpuser,password=xsxsxsxs,uid=500,gid=500,mode=755 > cp /home/crappyporntexts/sometextfile.txt juttuputtu.txt foobar.txt will not be created. In Zope error log ( ZMI ) I find following errors. I reversed the order from from the ZMI so the first one is the first error that came, and the third one is the last error. 16:07:59 userpuser (userpuser) Not Found: The requested resource does not exist. 16:07:59 userpuser (userpuser) Not Found: The requested resource does not exist. 16:07:59 Anonymous User (None) Not Found: The requested resource was not found. Inside those error messages are following http-requests that came to Zope ( the one at the bottom is the last one): http://127.0.0.1:8081/vaisalaprod/juttuputtu.txt/PROPFIND http://127.0.0.1:8081/vaisalaprod/juttuputtu.txt/PROPFIND http://127.0.0.1:8081/vaisalaprod/juttuputtu.txt/manage_FTPget And logs of davfs itself ( when compiled with debug option ) show: webdav.log : ------------ Creating request... RE: how to test connection speed on external zope server

Hi all, Kevin, Already tried JMeter, lots of trouble installing on W2k. Got it working but couldn't quite figure out how to read output -> I'm a No-Tech :-( Those stats and graphs are not very readable to ordinary users. I do not kknow how to implement this within Zope or serve to my users as a statistics page -----Original Message----- From: Kevin Carlson [mailto:khcarlso@bellsouth.net] Sent: Thursday, December 19, 2002 2:19 AM To: roel(a)planetinterior.com; zope(a)zope.org Subject: RE: [Zope] how to test connection speed on external zope server You can try JMeter available from http://jakarta.apache.org/jmeter/index.html. Dieter, with 'connection speed' I mean real numbers on download-upload. For example I'm working with ADSL, witch means (in my case) 128 KB down, 20KB up. Our Zope server is located elsewhere in a data warehouse to "ensure" faster access. I know some sites have online "speedometers" like http://speedtest.zdnet.be/zdnet/default.asp?LanguageCode=be? (this is a Dutch one) wich messures your current connection to the internet and other sites. -----Original Message----- From: Dieter Maurer [mailto:dieter@handshake.de] Sent: Thursday, December 19, 2002 12:22 AM To: roel(a)planetinterior.com Cc: zope(a)zope.org Subject: Re: [Zope] how to test connection speed on external zope server Roel Van den Bergh writes: > some users are complaining about low traffic speed. > > Is there a way to test and/or log connection speed to the Zope server from > an external source? Preferably from a win station (yeah I know, but ...). You can use "-M" logging to analyse Zope request processing. Search the mailing list archives for "requestprofiler". This does not measure the "connection speed" (do not know what that is). You may also use "ab" (part of "Apache") for benchmarking. Dieter To all the others who kindly replied: still investigating your answers. I hope I can figure out what you meant :-) TIA, Roel

how to test connection speed on external zope server
