Error handling and Zpublisher type casts ?
by Andreas Martin 18 Dec '02

18 Dec '02

Hallo ! I would like to ask how I can catch an error produced by a Zpublisher type cast. If I have an zpt with a html form with input box <input type="text" name="number:int"> then the Zpublisher tries to convert the string I typed in into an integer number. If this fails, e.g. if I type in an string "aaa" that cannot be converted instead of a number "123", then I get this error: Zope Error Zope has encountered an error while publishing this resource. Error Type: ValueError Error Value: An integer was expected in the value 'aaa' How can I catch this error ? Thank you Andreas Martin

Help with Tables
by Lindstrom Greg - glinds 18 Dec '02

Greetings- I am in the process of designing three (count 'em 3) projects in Zope and have spotted a common theme running through them. I have pages which lists information stored in a Gadfly (for now) table via a ZSQLMethod. I would like to add the following features to my tables; 1. The ability to click on the column header to sort the table by that column (member number, name, etc.) 2. The ability to click on an entry in the table to bring up more information about the particular item. For example, clicking on a member number might bring up a form showing more information about the member. Is there documentation as how to go about doing this? Or can one of you point me to a page that does it already? Thanks! --greg Greg Lindstrom The limits of language are the limits of one's world --Ludwig von Wittgenstien ********************************************************************** The information contained in this communication is confidential, is intended only for the use of the recipient named above, and may be legally privileged. hi Greg, I'm not sure of any existing products which would do this, but it's easy enough to do yourself. 1. The column header needs to be a link back to the page, but specifying the column name, so an optional 'order by' clause in the zsql method. but the dtml-sqlvar tag puts quotes around its values, so this wouldn't work. and it wouldn't be safe to just use <dtml-var ...> inside a zsql method as someone could hack your site and call it with the column name e.g. 'dummy; drop table users'. I would do this with each table display page as a folder with an index_html python script, a zsql method, and a display method. The python script takes an optional parameter of the column name, or sets a default. it checks this against a list of metadata about your table with the column names, and throws an error if this isn't in your 'safe' list. It then calls the zsql method with the column name, which has an 'order by <dtml-var col_name>' clause. 2. you need to make a page which displays the detail of the particular item given its primary key. I'd have a python method (say 'detail') which picks up the key id as parameter, calls a zsql method to get the info from the database, and sends it to a display method (dtml or zpt). The item in the first page is an <a href="detail?key=&dtml-KEY;"> (in DTML, with KEY being a variable with the primary key value) link to the python script 'detail', which replaces the key id when generated. So this becomes a link to the detail page for each item. hope this helps Ben Avery Lindstrom Greg - glinds wrote: > Greetings- > I am in the process of designing three (count 'em 3) projects in Zope and > have spotted a common theme running through them. RE: Any comments from ex-PHP developers?

Thx a bunch Wankyu for sharing you thoughts on PHP vs. Zope. As a matter of fact, I'm playing with PHP + FastTemplate + MySQL, and it looks interesting. I still need more about what Zope would offer in addition to this. To sum up what you wrote: Pro's - Zope makes it easier to separate logic and presentation : honestly, I don't see the difference between PHP scripts outsourcing display to templates and Zope + DTML/ZPT - Python is truly OOP : What is missing in PHP4? Multiple inheritance? Con's - there are a lot more PHP developers than Zope developers, hence more docs and more help in case of need - Zope uses its own DB instead of a filesystem. But then, nobody complains when data are saved in other DBMS's, so why do they complain about ZODB? - ZPT is a bit slow, but maybe as slow as PHP and some templating engines Thx again Fred.

too strict html validation in page templates (zpt)
by normand cote 18 Dec '02

18 Dec '02

I find that html validation in page templates is over-strict (at least from Zope 2.4.3 on). The following bit validates ok at http://validator.w3.org but fails as input to a page template ("EOF in middle of construct"). The problem is that the attributes on the span tag are not separated by whitespace. It works fine as a dtml method, though. The reason this is such a problem is that Dreamweaver MX (and perhaps other versions) tends to create markup that looks like this, and it is the most common tool used by page designers with whom I work. My question is three-fold: 1) Why is there such a difference in syntax sensitivity between zpt and dmtl methods? 2) Does anyone know of a tweak to tal.htmlparser that will relax some of these restrictions? -- OR -- 3) Is there a tool that will clean up errant code such as this (and other problems like p tags not allowing block elements inside them, causing the htmlparser to choke on the eventual /p that seems to be mismatched. I know, there is no certain way to fix such a problem, but just stripping the mismatched end tag might do. On second thought, that's not a solution at all.) ------------------- Sample html markup that fails as page template source ------------------- <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"> <html> <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html;charset=iso-8859-1"> <title>a title</title> </head> <body> <span id="someid"title="description"> </span> </body> </html> -------------------

RE: [Zope] Mysql-Connection in Python-Script
by sean.upton＠uniontrib.com 18 Dec '02

This will work in a python product (and likely in external methods), but not in Zope python scripts. I wouldn't suggest doing this unless you absolutely know what you are doing and why you need this instead of using the ZMySQLDA (and at that, you need to be mindful about how you do transactions). The one place where I can see this being useful is in scripts creating databases, and the best solution for this is likely an external method. Log in Plain Text
by Juan Manuel Ruiz García 18 Dec '02

18 Dec '02

Hi, I'm interested in tracing actions of my code to a plain txt file in each folder of the application. I just want to add one or more lines to the log after some actions take place, and I want to know if there's a simple method to write one line to that log.txt I think I can use "manage_editFile", but it implies reading all the content and adding the new line, but I'm not interested in reading it, just add the line!! I think it would be a useless-complex-method reading it before Help, please. Thanks in advance

The problem is that the attributes on the span > tag are not separated by whitespace. It works fine as a dtml > method, though. > Hmm, sounds like a bug in the validator. I think (not sure, though) that SGML requires a space between attribute name/value pairs. Ceratinly XML does. The HTML 4.01 Rec says about attributes - "Attribute/value pairs appear before the final ">" of an element's start tag. Any number of (legal) attribute value pairs, separated by spaces, may appear in an element's start tag." > The reason this is such a problem is that Dreamweaver MX (and > perhaps other > versions) tends to create markup that looks like this, and it > is the most common tool used by page designers with whom I work. > Perhaps browsers have been tolerant of run-together attributes, but it is a bad idea to encourage at this point. They will mess up any conversion to xml or xhtml. I am surprised that DW would emit bad markup like that, even if browsers accept it. Rather than try to hack the ZPT parser to allow these constructions, better to write a preprocessor to fix them up, I think. Cheers, Tom P

The answer, from Chris McDonough as I recall, is that the REQUEST object gets handled and referenced so many places inside Zope that it would probably be impossible to be sure that any property assignments you added would really get released, thus preventing garbage collection. No problem for a few REQUESTS with no added properties, but possibly a problem for code that adds and handles a lot of REQUESTS that have a lot of extra properties set. Cheers, Tom P

RE: [Zope] Help with Tables

The ZMI sort of uses this concept. Click a header, it sorts one way. Click again, and it sorts the other way. If you dig into the code that builds the manage_edit page, you can easily see how its done. I built an Automotive Sales site using this and it works well. Dropdowns show unique values for each field. Selecting an option, displays a new page but now that dropdown is not there and the others only have unique values from the first query and so on. Each row has several fields. Clicking a field limits the next page to only items of that type and the dropdowns update as well. And the whole time, you can sort and resort each of the columns. Then at any time, you can click a VIEW link to see the detail of a car. Works really well and I am going to go back and redo 3 others sections of our site to use this same technique. Good luck.
