probably a faq: access INSTANCE_HOME
by Mark McEahern 08 Nov '02

Admittedly, I spent 5 minutes searching and no joy... How does one access INSTANCE_HOME in an external method? The logic I need is something like this--I'm just missing the incantation for my fanciful getZopeEnviron. Help? # a fanciful dream... import os def dostuff(self): location = self.getZopeEnviron("INSTANCE_HOME", None) if not location: location = self.getZopeEnviron("SOFTWARE_HOME", None) if not location: raise PukeOla("What the f---?") import_dir = os.path.join(location, "import") # Now we're cooking with fire... Cheers, // m -

renaming multiple files
by Lee Harr 08 Nov '02

08 Nov '02

if I have 2 files which need to trade names, I have to rename one to a temp name, then rename the two files to their new names. There are other examples where it would be nice if as long as the names were unique at the end of the transaction the rename would proceed. Has anyone looked at changing rename to work this way, or have overwhelming arguments why this is a bad idea? _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 helps eliminate e-mail viruses. passing lists as function parameters
by Eric Roby 08 Nov '02

08 Nov '02

Maybe I am really missing something here, but for some time, I have been trying to figure out why when I pass a list to a python script, it becomes a sequence of characters. When I duplicate the process within the interpreter, it works as I expect it to. An example to demonstrate what I am talking about: Interpreter test- >>> listDef = [1,2,3,4,5] >>> def foo(x): ... for member in x: .... print member ... >>> foo(listDef) 1 2 3 4 5 >>> In Zope, if I create the equivalent of the foo function in a python script, passing a list in the parameter field, I get the following: 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 Or if I test the script with the following value for the parameter - [1,2,3,4,5] - I get: [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , ] so ... len(theList) returns a value that represents the count of all characters in the list definition - not the number of items in the list. Any enlightenment here would be greatly appreciated. I hesitate to call 'BUG' cause it might be me that is 'buggy'... TIA Eric

Can't get pcgi -- apache virtual server working
by lee doolan 08 Nov '02

08 Nov '02

Is there any chance that someone could help me? I recently installed Zope 2.5.1 on a FreeBSD machine and put up the pages assocoiated with a portion of our site up with Zpublisher and Zserver with an assist from emacs ange-ftp. The pages I am referring to have several server side includes which I translated into their repective tal equivalents and everything went along just swimmingly. Our QA and production machines are a slightly different beast, though. We have installed a zope (2.5.1) server on our QA anvironment (RedHat 7.2) and we are an inordinate number of difficult problems trying to effect a pcgi linkage between an apache (apache-1.3.20-16) virtual host and the zserver. I feel confident that once we can get the pcgi bridge working, we can simply export the objects from the FreeBSD based server to the QA and production servers. __________________________________________________________ Outgrown your current e-mail service? by tom smith 08 Nov '02

08 Nov '02

When adding properties to a Zclass I'd like to have a date property whose default value is now() but when I try to add the property I have to supply a valid date string. Otherwise it errors I don't want to enter a time as what I want the value to be is ZopeTime.now() How do I do it? thanks tom -- tom smith http://www.othermedia.com/blog/ 0207 089 5959 3rd Floor, The Pavilion, Newham's Row, London SE1 3UZ

Replace files in a specific directory using pythonscript
by Ria Marinussen 08 Nov '02

08 Nov '02

Hi all, On my zope-site I have a special directory which contains only PDF-documents. Some of these files need regular updating, for example changed timetables, or changed regulations. I don't want the editor to use the management interface of zope, so I need a custom form and python script to upload and sometimes replace file in this directory. What I've got this far is a script (from ZopeLabs.com) and form to upload new PDF-documents. I know it is possible to upload a new file replacing the file for a certain ID because in the zope management interface this is done by editing the FileObject with the specified ID. I read in the bugcollector that the method "updata_data" cannot be used, instead "manage_upload" should be used. I want to create a form in which it is possible to select (radio button) the PDF-file that should be updated, and browse to a file on the local file system and upload this file to the specified ID, selected with the radio button. Can anyone provide me with a sample python script that uses (or clues how to use) manage_upload to upload this file to the correct ID? Thanks in advance, Ria Marinussen Webmaster Computer Science University of Twente
