Others beat me to the punch: read the Zope Book online. Also, have you at least got Zope installed and have logged into the Management Interface? Your membership/login needs may be solved by what Zope provides out of the box. I also have found Beehive's Book of Zope (ISBN 1-886411-57-3) a good introduction, but no one text is going to give you all the answers. You have to get your hands dirty and start building. I saw your post on zope-dev and one reply that said 'give up, learn Zope when you aren't under the pressure', but I disagree. I built my first Zope application (not just content) under deadline pressure, and it was a good way to learn "how do I do this with Zope?" Best of luck! RE: [Zope] Replace files in a specific directory using pythonscri pt
by Ria Marinussen 08 Nov '02

Hi Heimo, Problem solved. Thanks for the directions. (I was looking for a source file named "File.py" not "Image.py". ) For those who are interested in the sollution: the source tells me: .... def manage_edit(self, title, content_type, precondition='', filedata=None, REQUEST=None): """ Changes the title and content type attributes of the File or Image. """ .... def manage_upload(self,file='',REQUEST=None): """ Replaces the current contents of the File or Image object with file. The file or images contents are replaced with the contents of 'file'. """ ... so for my problem I needed "manage_upload". Using "manage_upload" I could successfully edit the content of the object, but I couldn't upload the file-content I wanted. Untill I looked at my form header-tag and realized I forgot to include "enctype="multipart/form-data". Stupid me! So a simple "context.objectname.manage_upload(file)" (with file being the name of the file-object to upload, and objectname being the name of the zope file-object) did the trick. Large file support in Python 2.1 ?
by Jean Jordaan 08 Nov '02

08 Nov '02

Hi all Apologies if this is a FAQ, a quick Google only turned up "Linux binary build includes Python 2.1.3 with Large File Support enabled compiled against glibc-2.1.3" from http://lists.zope.org/pipermail/zope-announce/2002-September/000884.html What I'd like to know is: what was done to compile that Python with LFS? And how do you check if it's in? After looking at http://www.python.org/doc/2.2p1/lib/posix-large-files.html I tried this:: jean@blommie Products $ getconf LFS_CFLAGS -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64 which makes it look as if the environment is OK for compiling in LFS. But doing 'import types; dir(types)' doesn't show a 'LongLongType', only a 'LongType'. So it looks like this Python doesn't handle large files after all. Is there a recipe somewhere? -- Jean Jordaan http://www.upfrontsystems.co.za

Brian Further problems I have downloaded, tar & installed zope twice now, following all instructions that I have found. On trying to start Zope I get a message "A user was not specified to setuid to fix this to start as root see/doc/setuid.txt" I have looked at setuid.txt and cannot work out the syntax to enter any command after trying multiple many many times. I was su ed to root when I ran the install in /usr/local/dc as in the documentation. I would be pleased to get some assistance Thanks Steffan -----Original Message----- From: Brian Lloyd [mailto:brian@zope.com] Sent: 31 October 2002 17:25 To: Bowen Steffan ap Geraint GT/IT; zope(a)zope.org Subject: RE: [Zope] (no subject) >> I have recently started a new job, and my first assignment is to >> upgrade currently dormant system which is in zope 1.10.2 (source >> release, python 1.5.1, linux2) to the latest version and I see >> that this week the latest became 2.6, I had never even heard of >> Zope before Tuesday, so I've been looking into it and found some >> documentation on installing and upgrading Zope 2.x and Upgrading >> to 2.2.0 (final release). From waaaayyyy back in HISTORY.txt: An option has been added to the bbb.py script in the utilities directory to convert ZODB 2 database files to ZODB 3 format. The bbb.py script now accepts an '-f' option that takes an argument specifying an output file name. For example, to convert the ZODB 2 data file, Data.bbb, in the var directory, to ZODB 3 FileStorage format:: python utilities/bbb.py -f var/Data.fs var/Data.bbb Note that version data are not converted. Hi, I tried the copy of data.fs but the service would not start. I am running 2.5 on Win2000. -----Original Message----- From: Stefan H. Limit transaction undo
by Joakim Nicander 08 Nov '02

08 Nov '02

Hello! We are using Zope for several customers where we built an interface to maintain their own websites. Working very well, but the ZODB will grow because of all saved transactions. We don't need the saved transactions since we do all the production on another server. Today we manually pack the ZODB regularly, but it would be nice to either stop or limit this feature. I have searched but haven't found any hint on how to do this. Is it possible? If not, is there a way to automatically pack the ZODB regularly? Another odd thing is that I see transactions saved when a dtml-method has been viewed. The method doesn't contain anything that do any changes to the ZODB. But I need to do some more testing and learn how Zope handles transactions before be absolutely sure. Where can read more about how/what Zope saves transactions? The handbook didn't go in to any details. Joakim Nicander

Utility functions
by Andrew Athan 08 Nov '02

08 Nov '02

What is the idiomatic way of expressing utility functions? I.e., python scripts that are meant to be callable by a variety of templates, dtml methods, other python scripts, etc. but which tend to be small, useful, and usually oriented at manipulating data (not generating html). Creating lots of separate Python (Script) objects seems like overkill, yet defined functions inside such a script don't seem to be easily accessible outside the script object. E.g. Script1 --------- def foo(a): return a[0] request= container.REQUEST <blah blah> return container.resultPage() Script2 -------- <blah> container.Script1.foo(x) The call in Script2 doesn't work...I'll go read the source for a script object and see if there's an attribute that gives me the access I'm looking for, but I thought I'd ask the list, too. aathan <Andrew Athan>

RE: [Zope] Redirect problem

Charlie Reiman and I have been writing: >>> This works: >>> >>> <dtml-var standard_html_header> >>> <dtml-call "RESPONSE.redirect('http://dogjoy.freezope.org/redirect.html')"> >>> <dtml-var standard_html_footer> >>> >>> But this doesn't: >>> >>> <dtml-var standard_html_header> >>> <dtml-call "RESPONSE.redirect('http://dogjoy.freezope.org/redirect.pdf')"> >>> <dtml-var standard_html_footer> >...it is probably a browser bug, not a Zope problem. >This implies asking the zope list for help is probably >not going to be super productive. We'll see - my problem may not be Zope-specific, but I asked the list hoping to find a Zopish way around it, something which the list members excel at. >You can hide URLs by use of frames. That's a constructive suggestion - as I would expect from this list - but I don't want to frame other people's pages. >Besides, redirect won't hide URLs from end users. That's not how redirect works. Redirection works fine for me except with pdfs. It is effective at preventing wholesale copying of the links, and allows counting of the outbound clicks. To complete this 'strategy' I am using ZButtons (instead of plain text) inside the anchor tags - cool product! Any other suggestions out there? Cheers, Ken
