Pyredir (freshmeat.net/projects/pyredir) could theoretically be hacked to allow for easier ways to setup redirector-based virtual hosting mechanisms, though the rewrite syntax for its pyredir.conf file is actually easier than mod_rewrite's rules. If there is interest, I'll post some examples of redirector rules tomorrow. Ok. Squid-Zope looks like the way to go, although it's not that common up to this moment. (I wonder whether a more straight way to handle virtual domains, just as simple as it is in Apache, would make it more popular than other solutions.) I've suceeded at using Squid-Zope with a single domain, but never had enough time to investigate pyredir to enable url rewrites, using W2K. I'd really appreciate if anyone post a how-to on this particular subject. Ausum ----- Original Message ----- From: <sean.upton(a)uniontrib.com> > I agree... Form Action question
by McDonnell, Larry 05 Nov '02

05 Nov '02

Hi, I am trying to have one of my forms provide the user the ability to choose what form to select next. I have done something similar to this in a previous form. In the first form I provide a pull down menu to let them select (Report vs. Input forms). I define the menu_type variable and submit the form. The next form, the user is still making some choices so this is where I set the variable globally (<dtml-call "REQUEST.SESSION.set('menu_type', menu_type)"> ). The user is making their final selection in this form and in the form action field I use this statement (action=<dtml-var expr="REQUEST.SESSION['menu_type']">) and this works. The user is in the form they selected and they are happy. I am working on some input forms now. The first form, the user will input a part number. The next form will display the title of the part number and any actions relating to this part number (RMAs, etc). At this point, if the user can continue to identify a problem with this part and fill in the header info (customer, address, etc.). What the user wants is the ability to add line item information about each serial number relating to the part. This is my problem. I can let them add one disposition. I tried the following: I made the <input type="hidden" name="menu_type"> on the first form. The next form the user can fill out the form and the "form action" will call a decision form. Also, I global define this variable <dtml-call "REQUEST.SESSION.set('menu_type', menu_type)"> The form is as follows: <form name="form1" method="post" action=<dtml-var expr="REQUEST.SESSION['menu_type']">> <select name="<dtml-var expr="REQUEST.SESSION['menu_type']"> "> <option value="update_nonc_partb">Add another disposition</option> <option value="update_nonc_partb_info">Save</option> </select> <dtml-var expr="REQUEST.SESSION['menu_type']"> <input type="submit" name="Submit" value="Submit"> </form> I have tried different variation but I will get a keyerror or a global error. Any pointers would be great. Sorry for the winded message but I thought some background would help. Thanks in advance. Problem with upload object
by Andrew Davidson 05 Nov '02

05 Nov '02

I don't think that the object that I'm grabbing is a file upload object because I get an AttributeError when I try to access the 'filename' attribute, and when I reference the object name, it return the path of the uploaded file instead of the actual file. My Zope file then contains only a string of text that is the path that the user submitted. There's probably something obvious that I'm not doing, but I've read the documentation, and that hasn't helped. I'm using Ie6, zope is runnning on Solaris8. See below for the code and error. Your help is greatly appreciated, thanks. Phantom object?
by Charlie Reiman 05 Nov '02

05 Nov '02

I've got some dtml that I wrote not more than a few weeks ago and it has this expression: <dtml-in r_specs prefix="tbl"> Everything works great, except r_specs appears to be missing. It's working and doing it's job (mapping multiple query args into a sequence), it's just not in the ZMI anymore. I've already run a find and it doesn't seem to be anywhere. Has anyone seen this? Not my object of course. I mean has anyone seen this behavior? I've search with the find tab from root and with a find & grep on the filesystem and I can only find the references to the object. There are no external methods with this name. And where did I leave my keys? Has anyone seen my keys? I could've sworn they were in my pocket...

RE: [Zope] Trigger/Auto ID on Gadfly DB

Um... just be careful. This won't scale to several simultaneous requests. You might want to be concerned about duplicate keys, conflict errors, and other such problems. Have you considered a random number and a check to see if it is in the db? RE: [Zope] advice needed

Big image databases can be just that: very big (I'm used to working with media-asset management systems for newspapers, and from that perspective, I can tell you that such a beast is likely best not done as a BLOB setup). I would think this suffers from scalability problems, regardless of which table handler backend you use in MySQL. If you have Terabytes of images, you want to store them as files across many volumes, which means you want to store them on disk volumes on scalable filesystems with logical volume management and good backup procedure. BLOBs in RDBMS won't scale with your hardware and won't let you use simple UNIX maintenance and backup tools. For example, try incrementally backing up half-a-dozen InnoDB table-space files using find+cpio (hint: you can't). I would approach this with MySQL, filesystem storage for binaries, and DirectoryStorage for ZODB (especially if this was a massive DB, which image DBs usually are). Sean -----Original Message----- From: Martin Gebert [mailto:Murphy@members.netsolution-net.de] Sent: Tuesday, November 05, 2002 2:27 PM To: gabecker(a)indiana.edu Cc: zope(a)zope.org Subject: Re: [Zope] advice needed Have you thought about storing the images as BLOBs in MySQL? I must admit I lack every experience how MySQL behaves under the load of many Long Objects, but in a small scale I've made good experiences till now with that (the concerning small application will go online the next days). Concerning the access restrictions, IMHO this would be handled the easiest way by roles and (in case of externel files or ZODB storage) different folders, if your special problem admits such an architecture. On the other hand, since you have a system writing files to disk, it might be better to have a security mechanism pre-built into your framework - instead of having to roll your own from scratch like you would with PHP. Zope wins in the security department too. Here's my advice: use the CMF. Create a content type that stores the binary externally. Decorate it with simple metadata (DCMES, and potentially other) stored in the object database, and write ZSQL methods, templates, and python scripts as skin methods that for that content type. Use the identifier/path of the object as a string-based key in your RDBMS for tabular data that decorates your main object. Make the UIs and methods that view and manipulate the said data CMF actions to add onto your object. IMHO, this is a powerful hybrid-storage design idea, and I hope this is helpful? If say, you wanted to store the image info in the ZODB, and the data elsewhere, then Zope is a good solution. Another nice thing about Zope you don't get with a language like PHP is much better managability of the presentation code. If that's important, then again, Zope is the way to go. -jim ----- Original Message ----- From: <gabecker(a)indiana.edu> To: <zope(a)zope.org> Sent: Tuesday, November 05, 2002 4:24 PM Subject: [Zope] advice needed > I am relatively new to Zope, but I plan to use it for an image database > system that I need to make for scientific purposes.
