Data.fs grows rapidly in size and crashes Zope !!!
by hpinson＠indepthl.com 04 Nov '02

04 Nov '02

Something very disturbing started happening the morning to one of my Zope servers. Does anyone have any analysis and suggested solution? My Zope 2.51 data.fs (which is normally very small at about 6mb) starts rapidly expanding in size until it exceeds 2GB file size limit and crashes Zope. This server, running on W2K has been stable for over three months. What could be going on? You can get a odbc driver for it, and it is more mature than Firebird, even though Firebird started off from Interbase.. Cheers, Tom P

Restarting Zope after shut-down / crash?
by Jon Whitener 04 Nov '02

04 Nov '02

I'd like Zope to restart automatically upon reboot. I found the following z2.py argument with Zope 2.6, but by itself it doesn't seem to do much. From the z2.py --help: > -Z 0 or 1 > > UNIX only! This option is ignored on Windows. > > This option controls whether a management process will be created > that restarts Zope after a shutdown or crash. > > If the argument to -Z is non-null (e.g. "-Z1" or "-Zyes"), a > management process will be used. If the argument to -Z is "-", or > "0", (e.g. "-Z-" or "-Z0"), a management process will not be used. > On UNIX, the default behavior is to create a separate management > process (e.g. -Z1) if the -Z option is not specified. > > (Note: the -Z option in Zopes before Zope 2.6 used to be used to specify > a pidfile name for the management process. This pidfile no longer > exists). I'm running Zope on Linux (RH 7.3), but I'm a Linux newbie. Is this the way to get Zope to start on boot? If so, why doesn't it seem to work? Do I need to install / run as root? I know there are other ways to start Zope on boot, but I wonder if adding this parameter to my start script would work somehow. I did add the argument ('-Z1' and '-Z 1') to my start script, but Zope doesn't start upon rebooting. Thanks in advance, Jon Whitener Detroit

Sendmail, Python and ZPT
by beno 04 Nov '02

04 Nov '02

Hi; It appears that ZPT doesn't yet work with our sendmail object. Now, I'm fine with using DTML to render sendmail, but since I'm converting to ZPT, I have this one last issue to deal with. Would someone tell me how to render sendmail using a Python script? TIA, beno

float calculation in ZSQL Method??
by Atuc 04 Nov '02

OOBTree vs OOSet
by kosh＠aesaeion.com 04 Nov '02

04 Nov '02

I have an object where I add a dictionary type object to record some information and I create one of these items/piece of information. Sorting is not needed and before I had it implemented as a list of dictionaries however that caused some problems. Mainly the ZODB starting getting huge very fast since the entire data structure would get copied everytime it was made. I then created an OOBTree and that worked a lot better and I just used a timestamp as the unique index however it seems that I don't really need a type with an index like that however when I tried to use OOSet it had the same behavior as the list of dictionaries did. ie It got big very fast. Should OOSet grow very quickly with newer items added to it? What is the best way to add items to it if it should not? I used insert(object) Is there a drawback to using OOBTree to replace almost any use of a python dictionary for a complex object since it seems to allow an object to have its subobjects change without having the entire thing saved again? Mmm, I have no idea. Maybe Dieter or Chris or the other experts? -----Original Message----- From: Oliver Marx [mailto:Oliver@tekk.dk] Sent: 04 November 2002 03:17 To: Hedley Roos Subject: Re: [Zope] Proxe error Well, but the Zope then crashes for 2 sek and is then up again. Other pages on the Zope server seems to work fine. Does Zope have a auto-recover function? I thought the regulars may find it of interest to see how the list is trawled for email addresses. I took out the web address on purpose. And before we get any bad jokes - I never sent any message to this creature. You are the only guy so far, but I only answered 3 ads, you don't have much competition in our area! I'm sure you got a few emails, but I hope you take the time to get to know me better. I tried attaching them in this email but they wouldn't fit so click here http://XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX I'd rather have picked out my best pics and emailed them to you, but it's probably better that you see all these. I hope I'm not too shocking to you? There is more about me on my homepage and the pics really make for an interesting conversation (my specialty). newbie user authentication question
by Andy Sime 04 Nov '02

04 Nov '02

Hi I'm trying to get my head round the user authentication possibilities in Zope, and maybe I'm looking in the wrong place, but here's what I'm trying to achieve: An intranet where users can view general information while unauthenticated, but where there is also a section which will deliver pages only accessible by the user themselves, after they pass through a login process. Now, I've looked through the Zope user authentication process, and maybe that's what I'm after, but in reading the users & security section of the manual it seems more related to their edit rights than their view rights. I just want to lock down personalised view access to selected material. Effectively, after passing through the login process, I want the intranet to display read-only information based around their userID, and for that information to be inaccessible to anyone else. Is this what the Zope security is for, or should I look at using other methods? Stunning product though :-) Thanks for any help Andy
