Zope and MySQL on Windows
by Greg & Janet LINDSTROM 02 Nov '02

02 Nov '02

Greetings- I have a fairly mature Python application which uses MySQL for the database. I would like to switch over from a single machine application to a web based app (and maybe even make some money!!), and thought Zope would be the logical choice. The past 2 weeks have had me running through the examples in the Zope book and the Zope "Bible", and I *think* I am ready to create a project. Then I read the the creators of Zope do not reccommend using MySQL with Zope on a Windows box. Rats! So... 1. Is this still sound advice? 2. If so, what other Open Source Database is out there. I really would like data/time data types, so that would leave Gadfly out, right? Plus. my database is getting fairly large (~5 Meg), so I'm not sure I want to load it all in memory. Thanks for any advice you can supply! Greg Lindstrom Vilonia, Arkansas

is horizontal layout with Formulator forms possible?
by Skip Montanaro 02 Nov '02

Is it possible to force horizontal layout of fields within a Formulator group? For example, if I have a group called "name" with stringtype elements "first" and "last", it is layed out as name first __________ last __________ Is there some way to get it to lay out the group as name first __________ last __________ ? I looked all around the Formulator tabs but didn't see anything. Extending the concept a bit farther, is there some way to nest groups within other groups? Outbound HTTPS Request
by Kevin Gill 02 Nov '02

02 Nov '02

Hi, I am trying to implement a subscription process using PayPals (http://www.paypal.com) IPN (Immediate Payment Notification) service. This service sends me a notification of a payment (via http), directly from the paypal server. This is easy to process using Zope. However, I am required to validate the payment, using a secure link. My Zope Server needs to send a secure HTTP request to the remote Paypal server. My question involves two parts: What is the best way (or even a way) of sending an outbound server to server http request from my Zope server to another server? How can I send a https request (using a verisign certificate) from Zope / Python? Thanks Kevin

Hopefully you have wget, lynx, curl, or links... 4 different options for getting Zope via HTTP from the command line. If you are really desperate and don't have these, if you have Python on your box, you could always write a small script using urllib to grab the file? Nested hashes, ZopeDB bloat, and URL
by chrisf 01 Nov '02

Consider this, I have a single Family python product. Family objects contains a hash of subfamily objects. Subfamily objects contain a hash of proteins. Protein objects contain a hash of amino_acids. Amino_acid objects contain a hash of atoms. Since we are talking about a couple thousand proteins and a over a million atoms, I don't want to make anything under Family a proper zope object. I have seen ZopeDB bloat and its is not pretty. Yet because they are not proper objects, they can not be refered to on the URL or otherwise. ie http://whatever:8080/Family/Subfamily/Protein/Amino/Atom everything bounces back to the one true product Family Any clues: Session variables ? Operator overloading __call__, __getattr__? Aquistion ? Any help greatly appreciated Chris :)

I just tried ftp.zope.org <ftp://ftp.zope.org> , and received an unauthorized. Can you use a browser? If not, how about wget or curl? Those two programs can get files via HTTP from a command line. Do you mean that you replaced the word "form" with the name of your formulator form? That's wrong. request is a dictionary. "form" is a key in that dictionary. The value of "form" is another dictionary containing variables. Try making the target page a page template containing only this: <span tal:replace="structure request"> </span> Zope will nicely format everything that's in the request variable. You'll see that there's a section called "form". p.s. you should reply to the list, not individuals. -- Paul Winkler http://www.slinkp.com "Welcome to Muppet Labs, where the future is made - today!"

RE: [Zope] Programmatic creation/update of ZSQL methods

You mean this? http://www.zope.org/Members/dshaw/AdvancedSiteSetup This is a ZEO solution, which I don't currently need. My site load is very low so I have little incentive to switch to ZEO other than the development advantages. But I'll look into this if I can't get the HTTP POST method working. I do want to switch to ZEO eventually. Thanks for the info.
