New zope.org development
by Guido van Rossum 01 Nov '02

01 Nov '02

There have been complaints about zope.org. The complaints include things like "the design is ugly", "the navigation is difficult", "it's too slow", and "search results are not useful." For a long time there have been plans to convert the site to the current version of Zope using CMF, and various false starts have been made, but so far the site is still running software that's best described "FrakenZope 2.3"... I opened my big mouth, and now I'm responsible for fixing this. :-) Actually, a new plan was already in place, and all I have to do is coach its execution. Zope Corporation has retained a highly skilled Zope developer, Sidnei da Silva, to do the work. The advantage over Zope Corporation developers doing this (as has been tried in the past) is that Sidnei isn't likely to be pre-empted by higher-priority customer work: for him, this *is* customer work, the customer being Zope Corporation. At the same time, because Sidnei is being paid, the expectation is that the plan will be carried out at a steady pace, as opposed to simply "letting the community sort it out." Sidnei's plan includes the following pieces: - use Zope 2.6 with CMF 1.3 for the new site - use a new skin design, the winner of the zope.org contest - use the new ZCTextIndex search engine - migrate all existing users and as much content as practical to the new site (There's more, but we'd be getting into detail territory.) The project goals include minimizing the amount of new code and content to be created, in order to minimize the risks of failure. We also strive to make future maintenance of the site simpler, both at the sysadmin level (process and resource control) and at the webmaster level (content control). All these goals are designed to make sure that the site can be kept current once the upgrade is in place. Time-wise, Sidnei expects a preview version of the new site to go up as new.zope.org within a month, and the final version to go live (replacing the old www.zope.org) within 2-3 months after that. Sidnei expects to be asking community help with some tasks; he'll post about this himself. In addition, we're also hoping to hire Sidnei as part-time webmaster for zope.org, starting next week. Having a steady webmaster will help the site stay accurate and up-to-date. --Guido van Rossum (home page: http://www.python.org/~guido/)

Re: [Zope] jakarta struts

Check out this oreilly article at > http://www.onjava.com/pub/a/onjava/2002/10/30/jakarta.html?page=1 > > I'm still new to zope and learning from the online > book. What are your comments on these 2 > framework/platform? Anyone used both before? Struts is a whole different animal from zope. Aside from the obvious differences (python versus java), Struts is a framework and tag library, whereas Zope is a programming framework, a fairly extensive class library, two different tag libraries (DTML and TAL/TALES), an application server, and a web server. With struts, you still have to add tomcat or WebLogic before you can develop or deploy. One thing that Zope and struts have in common is the concept of separating presentation from logic. In the days of DTML, Zope could not claim this, but with page templates Zope is actually better than struts in this regard. Struts uses a "Model Controller View" architecture. You could use a similar design in Zope. I try to do so when I develop in Zope by using page templates as the view, python scripts as the controller, and a files system product as the model containing the business logic. We recently deployed a very large-scale app on WebLogic using struts. My only complaint is that you end up creating a lot of forms and actions that seem redundant. I think Zope the application server could learn a lot from WebLogic (true clustering, failover, remote node management, remote application deployment, etc), but I don't know that Zope the development platform has that much to learn from struts.

2.6.0 errors
by Boyd, Robert, CTR, OSD-PA&E 01 Nov '02

01 Nov '02

Classification: UNCLASSIFIED Hi, I'm trying out Zope 2.6.0 on Solaris, using the binary distro. I've been using 2.5.1 successfully. I set up 2.6.0 to start as root, then switch to user 'zope'. I can start Zope, but when I try to add the tutorial, I get this error: Traceback (innermost last): Module ZPublisher.Publish, line 98, in publish Module ZPublisher.mapply, line 88, in mapply Module ZPublisher.Publish, line 39, in call_object Module Products.ZopeTutorial.TutorialTopic, line 163, in addTutorial Bad Request: The ZGadflyDA product must be installed! I look in Products and see ZGadflyDA is installed, not broken. So I try to add a ZGadfly connection and get: Traceback (innermost last): Module ZPublisher.Publish, line 98, in publish Module ZPublisher.mapply, line 88, in mapply Module ZPublisher.Publish, line 39, in call_object Module Products.ZGadflyDA, line 59, in manage_addZGadflyConnectionForm Module App.special_dtml, line 61, in __call__ Module DocumentTemplate.DT_String, line 474, in __call__ Module Products.ZGadflyDA.db, line 32, in manage_DataSources Gadfly Error: The Zope Gadfly Database Adapter requires the existence of the directory, <code>/usr/local/zope/2.6.0/var/gadfly</code>. An error occurred while trying to create this directory. So is this merely a permissions problem? I followed the instructions: var owned by root, then chmod 1775 to set the sticky bit (chmod o+t didn't work in Solaris). Thus I wind up with var having permissions of drwxrwxr-t. Any help is appreciated, thanks. Rob

RE: [Zope] Outbound HTTPS Request
by Schmidt, Allen J. 01 Nov '02

I hope you get some response from this request. I tried about a year ago and no one responded. I am not sure how to handle the IPN so we just sent a hidden variable to PayPal and it was carried through the whole process until payment was verified. A link back to our site connected that transaction to the user that started it and marked their database entry as PAID. Worked well when the user followed it all the way through. We had some who did pay through PP but for some reason did not click on that last final link that went back to our site to mark them as PAID. We would check daily and if their info was in our database and on PP and they were marked at PAID on PP, we just updated the database manually. It as an event registration system and so was only highly trafficked for a short period. Was not intended to be a long term solution but it worked for what we needed. -Allen -----Original Message----- From: zope-admin(a)zope.org [mailto:zope-admin@zope.org]On Behalf Of Kevin Gill Sent: Friday, November 01, 2002 8:25 AM To: zope(a)zope.org Subject: [Zope] Outbound HTTPS Request Hi, I am trying to implement a subscription process using PayPals (http://www.paypal.com) IPN (Immediate Payment Notification) service. This service sends me a notification of a payment (via http), directly from the paypal server. This is easy to process using Zope. However, I am required to validate the payment, using a secure link. My Zope Server needs to send a secure HTTP request to the remote Paypal server. My question involves two parts: What is the best way (or even a way) of sending an outbound server to server http request from my Zope server to another server? How can I send a https request (using a verisign certificate) from Zope / Python? Or, more accurately, it may be able to do other things within the function body, like check on the thread's status, but it cannot actually return to its caller. Thus one of Zope's threads - the one that called the external function that dispatched the thread(s), will be in use until your slow html site finally completes. Medusa probably is using its own threads and will presumably be able to continue operating, as long as Zope has threads left to work with. If you have to contact several such sites in one call to the external function, it could be worth it to contact each of them on a separate thread from within the same function. Then they would all be going in parallel, which would end up being much faster even if the dispatching function cannot return until all the threads have completed. Cheers, Tom P

catching exceptions thrown by gadfly db
by Micheál Healy 01 Nov '02

01 Nov '02

Hi all, I am trying to catch and handle an exception thrown by the gadfly db. My code is as follows: <dtml-try> <dtml-call expr="sql_add_software(p_custName=custName,swName=swName)"> <dtml-except> An error occurred. Error type: <dtml-var error_type> Error value: <dtml-var error_value> </dtml-try> The error is thrown and caught (violation of a unique constraint), but it still inserts the row in the DB. When I try to delete the identical rows, I get the following error: Error, exceptions.ValueError: list.remove(x): x not in list Any ideas? TIA, Micheál Healy

bobobase_modification_time problem
by Andrei Cenja 01 Nov '02

01 Nov '02

Hi, Due to a system clock error, our system's date was pushed forward a month; now the system date is back, ZopeTime() returns the right date, but any new object created still has the creation date a month into the future. Which is very bad, as most of the objects are time-dependent. Can this be changed, in other way than exporting everything and importing in a new Zope instance ? Zope-2.5.1, by the way. Thanks ! andrei

version mismatch (MySQL)
by Stephan Goeldi 01 Nov '02

After installing the binary i686 version of ZMySQLDA (including ZMySQL-db) on Zope 2.5.1 (Redhat 7.0), I get this message on startup: "WARNING: Python C API version mismatch for module _mysql: This Python has API version 1010, module _mysql has version 1007." But Zope runs perfect. How dangerous is this version mismatch?

In this example, *form* is the Formulator form. The error thrown indicates Zope can't resolve *form*. It is in the same directory as the script being used to generate the response, so it should be found. Suggestions? TIA, beno
