I have recently started a new job, and my first assignment is to upgrade currently dormant system which is in zope 1.10.2 (source release, python 1.5.1, linux2) to the latest version and I see that this week the latest became 2.6, I had never even heard of Zope before Tuesday, so I've been looking into it and found some documentation on installing and upgrading Zope 2.x and Upgrading to 2.2.0 (final release). Would this cover from 1.10.2 , or is there more help needed and if so where could I find the needed information. Steffan G Bowen

Using SSI With Zope...
by Matt Campbell 31 Oct '02

Can I use my SSI stuff, or do I have to switch to DTML? I'm populating Zope with a previously built site. Thanks! Matt

Can anyone point me to something that does file transfers from with a zope external?

I'm building a distributed job queue. I want to build a python program that hits an external with some parameters, and is handed back some files to be processed (ie rendered with povray) and then hand back the results.

ANNOUNCE: Pound - reverse proxy and load balancer - v1.0
by Robert Segall 31 Oct '02

31 Oct '02

This is to announce the release of Pound v1.0. New in this release: - Pound is now declared to be production-quality code - fixed a few minor problems, such as the ordering of certificate file - removed thread auto clean-up due to a bug in the Linux implementation of libpthread - added support for additional WebDAV commands (Microsoft-style) - restructured request match patterns - added support for HA ports for back-end hosts - added support for optional HTTPS extra header The software is at version 1.0 (production quality). Further testing (especially under heavy loads), improvements and suggestions are welcome. What is Pound (from the Web page) - a reverse-proxy: it passes requests from client browsers to one or more back-end servers. - a load balancer: it will distribute the requests from the client browsers among several back-end servers, while keeping session information. - an SSL wrapper: Pound will decrypt HTTPS requests from client browsers and pass them as plain HTTP to the back-end browsers. - an HTTP/HTTPS sanitizer: Pound will verify requests for correctness and accept only well-formed ones. - an HTTP/1.1 to 1.0 proxy. - a fail-over-server: should a back-end server fail, Pound will take note of the fact and stop passing requests to it until it recovers. - a request redirector - it will pass client requests to separate groups of servers, based on required URL and the presence or absence of headers (pattern matching) Pound was specifically developed to serve as a front-end for multiple instances of Zope running on top of a common ZEO storage, but can be used with any other web server. A patch for the Python source of z2.py is available as part of the distribution to allow using Pound's SSL capabilities. Pound is currently in use in several medium to large volume sites and seems to be holding up quite well: largest reported site does about 3.5 million requests per day, peaking at over 300 requests per second. The speed is well superior to other, equivalent solutions, the configuration is much simpler and the necessary resources (CPU, RAM, disk) are much, much lower. Pound is distributed under the GPL. For further information, download, etc. please see http://www.apsis.ch/pound Enjoy and let me know how it works for you. -- Robert Segall Apsis GmbH Postfach, Uetikon am See, CH-8707 Tel: +41-1-920 4904

Cookies und Request
by Tobias Herp 31 Oct '02

31 Oct '02

RE: [Zope] MS Access Db
by Keith J. Farmer 31 Oct '02

It is not the same. MS Access uses ethe Jet database engine. But, really, it's all quite simple (at least, in my experience, but I'm not trying to bridge a Zope instance under Linux to a Windows box's ODBC source). You want to create a system database connection to the Access database. This will provide the ODBC data source on the Windows box that Zope can talk to. Try looking at Start | Settings | Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Data Sources (ODBC). You'll instruct the OS to use the particular Access files, and to give it a global name of your choosing, which you'll use when you set up the Zope connector. There might be things you have to do on the Linux end to make the actual connection to the Windows machine, but doing the above will expose the Access database as an ODBC data source. Alternatively, if you have an MS Office 2k cd, hunt around for MSDE -- this is a freely redistributable drop-in module that looks and acts just like SQL Server, with some limitations. Access can export its database to the MSDE db, and then you'll have a version you can treat as SQL Server, with the performance benefits thereto. -----Original Message----- From: Mark Gibson [mailto:mark@dimensional.com] Sent: October 29, 2002 10:57 This talks about connect to a WinNt-MSSQLServer from linux. Is this the same thing as the MS Access DB? I'm quite unfamiliar with MS products, so any help is appreciated.

Could you point me to info howto handle this with mozilla (1.2)? I just had a look in the preferences but couldn't find settings concerning memory use for cookies. The general memory usage settings are very high. - I could search for more info at mozilla.org but i just want to ask you before if you have already the link to the solution. Do you?? Zope and ESI, my problems are solved.
by Alec Munro 31 Oct '02

31 Oct '02

Hi all, I just noticed the press release on Zope.org regarding Edge Side Includes in Zope with Squid. http://biz.yahoo.com/iw/021030/048171.html I posted in July looking for just this type of functionality, and now it seems Zope is going to cater to my needs (yet again). I am posting here to see if anyone knows how soon this is likely to be implemented. I imagine I won't be able to use it for the current project, but it could be quite useful in the near future. So anyone who can provide me with more information on details or timeframes, that would be fantastic. Thanks, Alec Munro
