RE: [Zope] Linux vs. UNIX vs. BSD

I'll second support for use of Debian. We use it in a lot of production tasks on a bunch of servers and for development workstations. That said, with some of our new boxes, we are using Debian, but compiling from source RedHat enterprise kernels (easier than patching stock kernel) to get better hardware monitoring, and more importantly, to get the O2 scheduler, which does have some crude CPU affinity support. I believe this is one area where Linux has been a bit behind some other Unix varieties. Though we haven't used it yet, as I understand it, CPU affinity is important to Python performance on SMP machines. I expect that we will write or find a simple user-space utility utilizing the new system calls to bind a group of processes to a single CPU. I think, in theory, this will allow us to successfully run two Zope instances on an inexpensive 2CPU machine, each instance bound to a respective CPU. I'm compelled to put in my two cents for Debian GNU/Linux now: - performance should be identical to any other Linux distribution on the same hardware. - configurability should also be identical, or exceeding other distributions. There's no overarching GUI configurator, but a combination between good policy on how packages are organized and tools never overriding your own settings without substantial warnings and chances to back out is nice. - not sure what you mean by "ease of use" and "lack of hacks". Most all common tasks (adding/deleting users, etc. ) already have scripts to handle them. Debian doesn't do much GUI integration, so this may count against your ease of use. On the other hand, I can administer a Debian server with a modem-enabled Palm. - RDBMS integration is there: packages already built for the usual Unix SQL servers. - Backup should be comparable to any other Unix. There's tar, dump, cpio, and afio for low-level tools (don't just use cat /dev/hdwhatever, please). There's tob, taper, afbackup, amanda and others for high-level tools. You can of course always pay for BRU, Veritas, or whatever normally runs on Linux. - ZEO should be a non-issue, as well. If you can get it running anywhere, you shouldn't have any extra difficulties. Downsides include the historically slow release cycle (Zope went from 2.1.6 to 2.5.1 during the last Debian stable release), which can be somewhat mitigated by building your own packages, or doing what lots of people do: building it from source in /usr/local. One could always install something other than the "stable" release of Debian on a server, but I'd not recommend it for the inexperienced (it'll be similar to running some other Linux distribution's normal releases). Debian's stable releases are very, very stable, and if your server hardware is supported, they're about trivially maintainable. -- Mike Renfro / R&D Engineer, Center for Manufacturing Research, 931 372-3601 / Tennessee Technological University -- renfro(a)tntech.edu _______________________________________________ Zope maillist - Zope(a)zope.org http://lists.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope ** No cross posts or HTML encoding! ** (Related lists - http://lists.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope-announce http://lists.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope-dev )

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 I'm splitting hairs here. I don't have an Extensions directory for my Zope install. (Zope 2.5.1, Debian GNU/Linux, Woody) So, where do I put it? Continued problem tal:condition
by zope 23 Aug '02

23 Aug '02

Hi All Thanks once again for all the help you have given me. I have tried out the suggestions. Now all my macros are in the same page. I m am trying to use : <div tal:condition="request/form/lkid | nothing"> <tal:block define="mName python:here.oms.Users.lib.pset_links(lkid=request.form['lkid'])"> <metal:block use-macro="container/zptmac_memall/macros/?mName"> List </metal:block> </tal:block> </div> Or else : <div tal:condition="request.form.get('lkid') == 't' "> <metal:block use-macro="container/zptmac_memall/macros/zptmac_alllist"> List </metal:block> </div> In both cases the earlier error of : exceptions.KeyError on id in "<PythonExpr request.form['id'] == 't' or nothing>" The problem is that the value for "lkid" even when it is passed does not call the macro. Irrespective of whatever value i pass i cant see the macros although the error is not being shown. Why is this? I would like to state the problem again. I have a page template that on loading first should not show me any macro after i send the form variable via a link the page should get refreshed and now the pag e should also show me the macro apart from what it was showing earlier. now there are no errors being shown but i still cant view the macros after the value has been passed. Could you please help me out. Thanks and Best Regards John Kunchandy Original message:: exceptions.KeyError on id in "<PythonExpr request.form['id'] == 't' or > nothing>" > -------------------------------------------------------^ > Could you tell me how I can rewrite this so that the first time the page is > loaded even if there is no value for "id" the page will be shown . > And only if I pass a form variable it should execute. That munges the whole list of > tal:conditions down to something more manageable... Heh. After posting this, I looked closer at your list below, and realised you're altering both the macro file name, and the name of the macro inside the file. That'd require that you be able to replace multiple elements of the macro name, rather than a single. That's not doable atm. I still reckon it should be... Then you'd be covered by a tal:define="macroName string:container/zptmac_${request/id}task/macros/zptmac_${request/id}list". Alternately, you can make all macros in macro files be called the same thing - so you end up with a file "zptmac_mempending", which has a macro called "std", and a "zptmac_memtask" which also has a macro called "std", and you just alter one element of the path to the macro, based on the id from the form. Tree?
by Learned 23 Aug '02

23 Aug '02

I was playing with Tree, from the point of view of using it as a dynamic navigation bar on a site. I've set up an index_html page that has a one row table with the tree on the left hand cell and a local page information on the right. If I don't put a starting location on the tree (i.e. <dtml-tree>) everything works fine, except that my nav bar always starts at whatever level I am. If I put the site root as the tree focus, (i.e. <dtml-tree foo> I get errors that standard_html_header isn't found, which is obviously false. Any clues as to what might be happening?

Automatic update of external methods
by Geir Arne Evjen 23 Aug '02

23 Aug '02

Hello, I'm writing some external methods which I have locally on my laptop. When a fix is done in a method I put the module in the Extensions directory on the server. Since it is quite many methods I want to reload all external methods which lies in a folder. I've used much time on clicking the upload button for each of the external method I've created (quite boring after a while). Is it possible to automate this process, without uploading each method when I've done some change in a method. Geir Arne Evjen
