Local File System v1.0 released
by jfarr 23 Aug '02

23 Aug '02

Finally, the long awaited next release of the LocalFS product! I've updated it to be a modern Zope product, but the essential guts are still the same rock-solid code that's been in the wild for 3-4 years now. There may still be a couple of new minor bugs, especially doc bugs in the help screens or admin pages. I appreciate any and all feedback, which is now even easier to give, since... LocalFS is now being managed on SourceForge. The LocalFS project page is at: http://sourceforge.net/projects/localfs/ >From here you can download releases, submit bugs or feature requests, or join one of the support forums. Here's what's new (from the change log): - Fixed regex deprecation warning. - Fixed possible IOError on module loadup trying to log exceptions. - Fixed acquisition problems with LocalFile and LocalDirectory objects. DTML rendered from the file system should now work just like DTML in the object database. - Fixed a permissions bug with the manage_upload() method. It was looking for the wrong permission. =( - Updated management pages to new Zope look and feel. - Removed redundant edit page and manage_edit() method. All properties are now edited through the properties page. - Added help system documentation. - Removed automatic text mode translation. All files are now copied as binary (with a nice little performance boost!) - Removed old, crusty win32wnet.pyd. - Changed manage_upload() to use a new strategy for determining the object id from the file path. First we check for Unix path seperators. If we find one we grab everything after the last one as the filename. Next we check for Windows and then Mac path separators and hope we never get a Unix path without a Unix path seperator but with one of these characters ('\' or ':'). Finally, if we never see any kind of path separator we just assume there is no path and use the whole thing as the filename. I think this should work for most browsers. :-/ - Changed object creation protocol. External adapters now receive an open file object instead of a blob of text. - Added get_size() and bobobase_modification_time() methods to LocalFile objects. - Added new manage_createDirectory() method to LocalDirectory objects (uses the 'Manage local files' permission). Big, huge thanks to all the people who have contributed ideas, code, and feature requests over the years. Hopefully it will all pay off when you download the new version! ----------- Also: Right now, I'm putting the wraps on LocalFS v1.1, which is a massive improvement over the current version. Just to give you a sneak preview of the changes: - Handles all major object types out of the box: Image, File, DTML Document / Method, Zope Page Template, Script (Python), ExternalMethod, ZSQL Method, even Database Connections! - Copy and paste from the object database to the file system and vice versa. - Local directories are now represented as Folder objects, so they should behave just like a normal ZODB Folder. - Because of this, object 'data' (e.g., the actual content bits in an image file) is fetched in a lazy manner. This means that the data is not loaded until the object is rendered, but all other object properties are available at all times. Remember, this is just a teaser! These features are not in version 1.0! Sorry, you'll just have to wait another week or two. =) Cheers, --jfarr

Are there any Python-based or Zope-based web mail applications similar to SquirrelMail or Courier's webmail? I need to access Courier via IMAP and POP3. Thanks, // mark -

[Search] Documentation for "SecurityManager.validate"
by Dieter Maurer 22 Aug '02

22 Aug '02

I am looking for documentation about "SecurityManager.validate" (or "ZopeSecurityPolicy.validate", which is almost the same). Why do we get three outcomes: "return 1", "return 0" and "raise Unauthorized"? I would expect just the two returns and no exception. The source documentation for the "raise Unauthorized" is simply incomprehensible for me. What are "accessed" and "container" (in contrast to one another)? Again, the source documentation does not give me a precise understanding. Why is it bad when "aq_base(accessed) is aq_base(container)"? This seems to indicate, that under certain conditions "accessed" and "container" must not be the same, why? When can I omit some of the "validate" arguments? Dieter

menu items based on user roles
by Jacob Behm 22 Aug '02

22 Aug '02

I have a simple DTML tool that lists objectValues from the current folder to generate a menu. I would like this menu to display only items that the user has permission to see. I want the process to be transparent to the user. It seems to me that I read about an easy way to do this. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? Thanks Jacob Behm

Rendering the server root directory
by Ahsan Imam 22 Aug '02

22 Aug '02

Hello All, The rendering of the root directory takes forever. If I request http://URL:8080/manage it takes almost 30 seconds to a minute to render. If I manage_menu or manage_workspace then it responds a little faster. If I access any folder under root the response is instantanous. I am looking at the stupid, error and the request logs but they are providing anything unusual. I am using Zope 2.5, Python 2.1.3 on RedHat Linux. What is the best method on troubleshooting this problem. Thanks for you help

zubb context of _[id]
by Bryan C. Andregg 22 Aug '02

22 Aug '02

I'm converting the main ZUBB index_html to be a Page Template instead of dtml and mostly everything work. Where is breaks is in a few calls like, <dtml-var "_[id].threadMessageCount()"> For the life of me I cannot figure out what the context of this is in order to convert it. We're in a <dtml-in> body, and I have the tal:repeat working fine, but nothing like, tal:replace="container/item/threadMessageCount" works, always failing with getattr because I have the context wrong. Using CVS with Zope
by Alejandro Fernandez 22 Aug '02

22 Aug '02

Hi, I'm new to CVS and we've been told at my work that from now on everything should go in CVS: even the images, html and dtml files I work on in Zope. I use ExternalEditor to do edits, so pretty much everything I edit goes into my /tmp dir when I update it, and maybe there's a way to do CVS updates based on files in here, by writing some little script to copy these files to a cvs directory whenever they are updated. This is the way I was thinking of going: first: mkdir myzopedir wget -r ftp://username:password@zopeserver.com cvs import myzopedir then when making edits cvs update * (check them, fix if necessary) cvs commit individual files But maybe someone else already does this, or there might be a product to help? Any idea? Thanks, Ale -- Alejandro Fernandez Electronic Group Interactive --+34-65-232-8086-+34-93-600-2338--

by Benjamin Eastwood 22 Aug '02
