DTMLFile question
by tomas＠fabula.de 22 Aug '02

22 Aug '02

Hi, I'm trying my hands on a Zope product. The different `views' are to be rendered with the help of dtml files, thus the class definition looks something like: |class CMSResource( Traversable.Traversable, ...) | "Yadda, yadda" | | ... | | manage_main = DTMLFile("dtml/CMSResource/main", globals()) | manage_edit = DTMLFile("dtml/CMSResource/edit", globals()) | | def __init__(self, resource): | ... So I can call on <a CMS resource>/manage_main and I get this view, etc. The dtml/CMSResource/ directory is of course a directory delivered with the product, it is ``part of'' the product, so to say. Now I'd like to be lazy and try to fetch the views `as needed', instead of declaring them as DTML class methods. Is that possible? What I have in mind is a method |class CMSResource( Traversable.Traversable, ...) | "Yadda, yadda" | | ... | | def render(name, args): | my d = DTMLFile("dtml/CMSResource/" + name) | return <<call d with appropriate arguments>> enriched of course with error checking, caching of things and all that. Whatever I've tried failed because of --as I understand-- acquisition issues (the object returned by calling on d, like d(self, self.REQUEST) is expected to have an aq_parent and the like somewhere in the innards of Zope. My understanding of Zope is not as deep as to have an idea whether what I'm trying is possible (or rather: sensible). Any hints? Thanks, -- tomas

Generic Content Object for use with Page Templates
by Tim Hicks 22 Aug '02

22 Aug '02

I've been using Zope for a while now, and I'm a little miffed that I don't really know the answer to this. Having finally succumbed to the preachings of the 'Withers Church of the Page Template', I thought I'd give them a shot for a site I'm building. So, I've got myself setup up with and index_html page template that I want to use to present the content of my site. Obviously, I could use more zpts to hold my content, but I don't really like that idea coz I just want to store the 'meat in the sandwich' (of standard_html_header/footer as it was) - zpts seem overkill and potentially a little confusing for naive users. http://www.zope.org/Documentation/Books/ZopeBook/2_6Edition/ZPT.stx#2-90 mentions that this is not appropriate and mentions some alternative content objects. However, it says CMF solves this issue - and I'm not using CMF, so... I could use DTML Documents, but I don't want the user to be able to write DTML really, and recent posts, coupled with ChrisMcD's 2.6 Edition Zope Book lead me to believe that way lies the dark side. DTML Methods clearly aren't right. I want properties anyway. STX - haven't used it but it looks like it could be handy. Still, I want my users to be able to bash out some html when editing. Files - may be appropriate as they can just store text and can be edited through the ZMI if less than 64KB I believe. Still, if I want to have the index_html zpt present the contents, I'll have to have urls explicitly of the form file/index_html, otherwise I presume I'll just get a file download prompt from my browser. So, I think I'm left with Folders. If I store my text as a property of a Folder (and adjust my zpt to reflect this), I can have an auto-presenting content object that doesn't require users to remember to slap the bread around their meat (if you know what I mean ;-) ). Are Folders the content object of choice in this case then, or am I missing something. BTW, I'd rather not have to use objects that aren't bundled zope as I have to fight for every additional product that is installed. Thoughts anyone? tim

RE: CPU Affinity, was RE: [Zope] Linux vs. UNIX vs. BSD
by sean.upton＠uniontrib.com 22 Aug '02

Sigh... I always thought Solaris was an exercise in feature-broken command line tools (want to try unpackaging Zope without GNU tar anyone) ;) The first thing most sysadmins do is make Solaris act/look more like Linux by installing boatloads of GNUish tools (bash, gcc, vim, tar, gzip), so if all that is left is a kernel, it sort of defeats the point of the hassle (assuming you could get the same with one build of a patched Linux kernel). Unless patching and/or replacing all of user-space is easier than a kernel build? Perhaps if Sun adapted Debian's APT to support its pkg format (about as likely as typing 'apt-get install msword' on my Windows box, I'd say)... Pb with ZGDchart or ZSQLMethod ??
by David PEYRIERES 22 Aug '02

22 Aug '02

Hello, I have a problem with ZGDChart 0.6.2 . I've linked it to a ZSQLMethod (via an ZODBC Database Connection) to plot data curves. When, at least, 1 data misses, there's no graph plotted. How can I do to plot this even if I got misses ? (NB: I've tried the SQL fonction nvl(col, substitute value) into my SQL Method to obtain values when ODBC returns no values, but it doesn't work !!) Thanks. mailto david.peyrieres(a)meteo.fr

POSKeyError ... uh-oh
by Paul Winkler 22 Aug '02

22 Aug '02

A big chunk of my dev server has apparently just vanished. When I click on the folder in question, I get the following. Have I hosed my ZODB somehow? This is bizarre. I swear I didn't do anything to or in that folder anytime recently, and a search through Undo tab in the parent folder confirms that. I'm running zope 2.5.1, python 2.1.3 on linux. Haven't seen anything like this before, and searching lists.zope.org doesn't turn up anything helpful. Restarting zope doesn't magically fix it... ------------------- Zope Error Zope has encountered an error while publishing this resource. Evaluating python with my own variable bindings
by Ross Boylan 22 Aug '02

22 Aug '02

I would like to bind symbols to values, e.g, Q1=True, Q2=False.... and then allow the user to specify arbitary logical expressions like Q3 and Q4 or (given different bindings) Q2 == 5 It would be fine if they could execute arbitrary python scraps. It looks to me as if this might be a job for a PythonScript. I was going to evaluate an arbitrary string, but since PythonScript has a security and binding framework it seems better to use it. So I have two questions: 1) Is PythonScript the most appropriate tool? In particular, I am concerned because I am not calling it from the web, but from some code in my product. The API reference does not refer to this case as a possible use. 2) Exactly how do I bind the symbols for use within the script? In case you are wondering, I'm doing this for rules like "only answer question 5 if you said yes to questions 3 or 4". Thanks.
