Zope Troubleshooting Tip (learn from my mistake)
by BZ 06 Aug '02

06 Aug '02

So I was trying to get ZUBB to work (yes, I am the person maintaining the code as well) and for some reason I could not post to this one board I had installed in a virtual host/cmf. I created another board and nothing would post. I checked permissions, locations, everything and it would not post. After hours of playing with it and getting quite frustrated I remembered a problem I once had with names so I searched my installation for "post" but got back nothing but the two post methods in my first and test boards. And then I saw it. Sitting right there in the root directory. A folder named "submit". I renamed it "submit_old" and lo and behold I could post again. The problem was that I was checking for "submit" in my post method and it was picking up on the directory name (OO and all that goodness). TIP: The lesson learned is: When troubleshooting something in Zope make sure you are not calling a method or variable that has the same name as another method / variable / object in your folder paths. Use the find feature and take a look around. Cheers, BZ

Updated pages list
by Glenn Stauffer 06 Aug '02

06 Aug '02

I have a zope site for which I want to include a list of updated/new pages on the front page of the site. I've been searching for an example of how to do this. Can anyone point me toward one? I'm better with python than with dtml, so if there is a way to do it with a python script, that would be great. Glenn

Chris McDonough: "The original aim of the Zope Book was to provide "instant gratification" to its reads by way of introducing simple applications straight away. But I've found that, by far, the people who are reading and commenting on the book want more often to know *why* something is the way it is than how to do it once by example." ...I don't need to know *why* I need to now *all* in order to do more complex things. The API and Refference are not complete... What is to be done? Hmm. In what way aren't they working? Does my page generate an error message, or is the page just failing to increment its counter and leaving it stuck? (And if so, at what value - 1 or 0?) David PS. What Zope version are you using? You will need to have a Browser ID Manager and a Session Data Manager somewhere in the tree where the DTML document can acquire them (may as well be the root directory). If they aren't there, add them, using the default options. You'll also need a Session Data Container; this is best placed inside the temp_folder created by default on installation. You'll need to point the session data manager to the location of the session data container. Some or all of this structure is created automatically on installation; I can't remember precisely how much. Anyway, add in anything that isn't there, and sessioning should work. Can zope cope ?
by Benjamin Michael Snooks 06 Aug '02

I have been faced with a proposition to build a web portal type site for an australian community. The proposal is as follows.... The site is for a not-for-proit organisation. Flash portal layout. Area for users to login. Logged in users progress throughout the site collecting points according to how many messages they may post on a message board or how many times they post images or download files etc... The points can be exchanged for goods or services offered in a section of the site. The site must contain a gallery of images and videos that can be posted by user who visit. Site members must be able to publish event reviews and details. This site must be able to run as a .com on a foreign server we dont have access to except via ftp. We as yet dont know what OS its running or what server software its running. I have little database or portal programming experience. I do have university multimedia experience that allows me to complete the web sites design. I also have a sound knowledge of computers and the Internet generally and a basic knowledge of linux. I have been appointed leader in creating the site with limited resources. Can anybody suggest how i tackle the problem? Is this type of site possible with Zope if i were to attempt to teach myself python? Any response whatsoever would be greatly appreciated. If anyone would like to tackle the project by all means give me a yell ! Kindest Regards Ben Snooks snooksy(a)urban.net.au bmsno1(a)student.monash.edu.au Peace and Light %
