Hi again, Charlie asked me several questions (thanx for trying to help!) wich I'll answer below: By the way: Because I have a Dutch windows version, some of the output is in Dutch, but I don't think it will be a big problem because these outputs are always in a standard layout. ----------------------------------------------------------- Computer turned on? Hopefully this can contribute to solving my problem!!! It sounds like you have basic networking issues. Unfortunately, you've got them under '98 which means most of us will wince and tell you to upgrade to NT/2000/XP/Linux, which I know you probably don't want to hear. To be honest, I'm not even sure if netstat and ipconfig are available under '98. I wish I could be more help. (Yep, I'm a newbie...) Situation I'm going to create a website to gather funds for a hospital in Ghana (St. John of God Hospital in Duayaw Nkwanta). To get an idea about the situation: <http://www.zwo.nhl.nl/hbov/buitenlandstage/ghana.html> http://www.zwo.nhl.nl/hbov/buitenlandstage/ghana.html (Dutch & English). Website I want to do this with Zope & Python. I want people to be able to do online donations, retrieve information about the project, maybe send a mailinglist to keep them up to date and there are many more plans. So: I've got a lot to learn... Learn & develop @ work & @ home In order to learn as quickly as possible I tried to install Zope at work and at home (of course during my break ;-) ). At work (Win2000 Prof.), everything functions OK. I've done the tutorial and I'm now working myself through the ZopeBook. So far so good, but... My problem At home I've installed Zope (2.5.1) on my computer (Win98). No errors occured during installation. So, just like at work I tried to login to Zope for the first time, but... When I start the START.BAT, my computer starts a dial-in to my internetprovider! It seems this occurs when START.BAT is trying to retrieve my hostname. When START.BAT is finished, I type in... <http://127.0.0.1:8080/manage> http://127.0.0.1:8080/manage (START.BAT comes up with 127.0.0.1 as localhost and 8080 as port) <http://popeye:8080/manage> http://popeye:8080/manage or <http://popeye:8021/manage> http://popeye:8021/manage (popeye is the computername in my Win98 network-settings and START.BAT comes up with popeye as localhost for port 8021) <http://localhost:8080/manage> http://localhost:8080/manage (should always work, right? Not!) <http://stjohnhospital:8080/manage> http://stjohnhospital:8080/manage (stjohnhospital is the superuser I installed Zope with) ... but none of them works!!! All that happens is that my browser (MsIE) when I'm offline shows me that the page cannot be found and when I'm online it shows me either "server error" or "page not found". >:-(( NB: It doesn't matter wether I login to my internprovider or not. I'm quite sure it's nonesense to be online in order to login to a local Zope-server, but hey, I've tried everything possible (as far as I know). I also tried to un- and reinstall Zope, but that didn't work either. :-( So please, help me out here!!! (In a short while I've got some days off and I want to do some work for the website at home.) Not only me, but also the people we're trying to help will be very gratefull! ;-)) Best regards, Yvon Breuer

Hi Andrew, The return address on my e-mails are http://127.0.0.1/klassifieds_Program. I'm pretty sure you can change the way to acquire the IP address to send mail. I'm cc'ing the Zope list to see if others might have some input. Any good CLI-based tool to suck my Zope site?
by EvH 22 Jul '02

Hi, I'm currently running Zope on my local Windows host, and would like to download the entire site to upload it to a remote FTP server to which I have no admin control (just disk space). I've been using wget for Windows release 1.8.2, but it doesn't work flawlessly: I've tried "wget -m http://localhost:8080/mysite", and "wget -mk -np http://localhost:8080/mysite: after downloading stuff at http://localhost:8080/mysite, wget goes on to download stuff from http://localhost Anybody knows of a good, command-line based offline-browser for Windows? Even better: Is there any way to export part of the directory tree through the ZMI (since the Export function doesn't export the tree to a filesystem)? Thx EvH.

Zope Unsubscriptable object error
by Mark Evans 22 Jul '02

22 Jul '02

Hi, I am having problems with an Unsubscriptable object error in Zope when the returned tuple only contains one element. The error goes away if the tuple has 2 or more elements. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. See details below. Thanks in advance, Mark The following works in the python 2.1 interpreter: >>> import DCOracle2 as dco >>> d = dco.connect("scott/tiger@devbase") >>> c = d.cursor() >>> sql = "select status from ordered" >>> c.execute(sql) 1 >>> foo = c.fetchone() >>> print foo ['yes'] >>> print foo[0] yes >>> When this is run as an external method in Zope, everything works, unless you do foo[0]. Then you get the error: Zope Error Zope has encountered an error while publishing this resource. Also the proxy setting for the script is set to manager. Are you able to use getUsers() to work from a python script? If you can, then the problem must be with my set-up. If you cannot use it then there must be a problem with the security declarations and the code. Many thanks, Sion

python constants
by Ben Avery 22 Jul '02

22 Jul '02

Hi, I'm writing a website / application server which will have a lot of python scripts, and I need to have some global variables defined in one place, which can be easily imported into all my scripts. If I were writing standalone python (or external methods) I would just use import to pull them in. But I'd like to access this in the TTW interface, not as anything external. How could I do this? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ben Avery YouthNet UK

A sidestep about the IEDocument installation problems: > Thx much for the tip, but after installing the directory tree under > Products/ and restarting Zope, I do see a new product called "IEDocument > (Installed product IEDocument (IEDocument 0.0-st)) ", but I don't > understand what I'm supposed to do next when Arvid Patyupin says "Import > Standard.zexp into Zope Products folder. Create a new StandardSite instance > and create IEDocument and IEFolder inside it" (still a Zope newbie...). Hmm, I didn't use the Standard site product at all. Just install the IEDocument product and you should be able to add an "IEDocument" from the pulldownbox in the ZMI. I remember having problems with the .zexp as well. I can't test anything at the moment unfortuately. More on the perfect Zope editing environment: > >I think making a good TTW (throug the web) WYSIWYG editing tool for > >HTML-documents in Zope would make it easy for any non-techie user to > >contribute to a website. I found some interesting stuff at: http://collector.zope.org/Zope3-dev/31 "Paul Everitt and I (Stephan Richter) agree that Zope 3 has to ship at least with one client that is a little bit more than just HTML" Looks like Zope3 has some of that... In the meantime I might start on wrapping up my patches into a Zope product (I'll wait for 2.6 to be released, before starting playing with Zope again). How do _you_ contribute articles to a Zope intranet?
by EvH 22 Jul '02

22 Jul '02

Hi, Since I now have a basic intranet running with Zope, I'm currently creating/editing articles but copy/pasting the HTML code into Namo's WYSIWYG HTML Webeditor, but it's clumsy, and I must remember to add the <dtml-var standard_html_header> and <dtml-var standard_html_footer> in each new articles. Keeping those two tools open and switching back and forth is a drag, and unusable by non-techies. Since Zope lets users work with WebDAV, is there a project for a WYSIWYG tool to replace the ZMI so that users could contribute to a site through a single, dedicated tool? Don't get me wrong, I think the ZMI is usable by people like us, but I'm thinking of tools for non-savy users. Thx EvH.

Plone/CMF
by NathanDunn＠ctimi.com 22 Jul '02

22 Jul '02

I am new to the Zope arena, but especially new to CMF and Plone. I have built a Plone site and somewhat customized it, but I am having one BIG problem. The site I am building requires users only to be able to see items which they have access to. I.e., User A should has access to folder 1, 2 and 5 (thus should only see 1,2 and 5), while user B has access to 2 and 4 (should only see 2 and 4). Utilizing the Security tab, I have created new roles for my user types and played around with the access priveledges. It looks to me that the way Zope works is to make you show all folder contents ("List Folder Contents") to a user and if they have "View" or some other priveledge, it will allow them to get in...otherwise, a LOGIN pop-up box appears. Of course, in this case, I do not even want them to see files/folders they do not have access to. Is there something I am missing in the Zope setup, or am I going to have to modify the Python scripts in the Plone/CMF pages? If a modification to the pages is in order, can someone help me there?
