Hi Folks, Part of the Zope site I am trying to develop involves collecting and storing membership information. I have run into a couple of snags, though. I have a form for adding users that calls a python script. The script is responsible for creating the user in acl_users, creating a personal folder for the user, and setting properties on the folder. So the code looks like this: context.acl_users.userFolderAddUser(username, pass, roles, 0) context.user_folders.manage_addFolder(username,'',0,0) context.user_folders.username.manage_addProperty('First Name', fname, 'string') The problem is with the third line. When the script is called I get an AttributeError on username. I believe this is because username is a variable containing the actual name of the folder. The interpreter doesn't know this and I can't figure out how to tell it. I have looked through the Zope API documentation and I haven't been able to find a function analagous to getObject(id=None) or some such thing. My second problem involves listing the roles of a user in acl_users. I execute the following code: context.acl_users.getUser('test').getRoles() and I get a list back. But the list contains "Authenticated" in addition to the actual roles of the user. I haven't logged in as this user, I am running the script as the Manager user (admin), so getRoles() shouldn't return "Authenticated" right? Does anybody know what is going on with and/or how to solve either of these problems? -Chris

sessions and zsql methods again!

Hi, I want to "SELECT CAR,MOTOR,VENDOR FROM TBL_CAR WHERE CAR_ID=<dtml-sqlvar intCarId>" (note the suave lezynsky-reddick namings!) - and get that into a list of dicts, so I can then output it all in a dtml-in with sequence iteration parameters. Would this be something like session=context.REQUEST.SESSION ld=[] ld=qryGetCarInfo(car_id=session['car_id']) for x in ld: entry={} entry["car"]=x[0] entry["motor"]=x[1] entry["vendor"]=x[2] ld.append(entry) session['dbgrabs']=ld It's a lot of data I need to grab in about 14 different queries... I'm using the SESSION namespace to hold the values, so I'm thinking of grabbing all these values from the database before I generate individual output pages("loading... please wait"), or even better, somehow grabbing them a little at a time as the user browses the pages, and deleting the info at the end of a session, or when another CAR_ID is accessed. I know the session stuff doesn't have a guide yet, and there's no one answer to all this, but I thought posting here might be a source of helpful tips, and there might be others who are doing this kind of thing too. Are there any gotchas I should know about? Can I for example, somehow commit information as it's gathered, or do I have to build loops that store the info and set a boolean value at the end, to give a little hope that the info has been gathered? Scalability questions

Hi, I am beginning the planning process for a Zope content management system that will support approximately 8,000 users. It is hard to predict the day-to-day use of the system, so I am trying to think ahead about scalability issues, and I have a number of questions. STATIC FILES One of the suggestions in the literature for improving performance is to allow Apache to serve static files. It would seem, however, that doing so completely takes away the meta data and permission management features of Zope. The LocalFS product, on the other hand, enables you to serve content from the file system and maintain meta data and apply user permissions from Zope. Is there any performance advantage with LocalFS, or is it basically the same as storing the content in Data.fs? DATA.FS LIMITATIONS If all the site's content is stored in Data.fs, I'm concerned that it would quickly grow to a size that would result in performance drag. Since I'm used to the RDBMS world, it seems odd to store all that data in one file. Is there a rule of thumb with respect to the amount of data you can put into Data.fs before performance becomes an issue? ALTERNATIVES TO DATA.FS It seems like the following alternatives to DATA.FS in its default configuration are available: ***Distribution*** This option would involve separating the server that stores the .FS file from the one(s) running Zope. You would do this with a ZeoStorageServer. A variation on this theme would be to use NAS/NFS to put the data on a separate server. ***ExternalMount*** Here you would use the ExternalMount product to store the data for selected portions of ZODB (e.g., for a specific Product) in a separate .FS file, either on the same or a separate server. Presumably this option would mitigate performance issues resulting purely from the size of Data.FS. ***BerkeleyDB or Oracle*** Oracle or Berkeley DB can be used as the storage mechanism instead of .FS. But in doing so do you loose Zope functionality? ***LocalFS*** LocalFS could be used to store large objects (like spreadsheets, PDF files, WAV files, etc.) on the file system and benefit from Zope's meta data and permissions system. In this case, it seems like the data Zope would store would be limited to the meta data and permissions data -- the entire object would not be duplicated in Data.FS. Like the ExternalMount solution, LocalFS would, it seems, alleviate performance issues related to the size of Data.fs. Have I exhausted the possibilities, or are there others? Other there other issues I should be thinking about? Thanks for your help! Just from browsing www.curl.com it seems to me that Curl is a corporation that builds an ide named Surge lab. There is not a lot of information on their website, i really don't know what Curl is, in a technical sense. A little guessing; May be there is a language behind this, may be the name of the language is Curl and Curl could have possibilities in the scientific area, data visualisation. Just something like Python.. On the other hand everything seems to be build in Java, so probably there is no Curl language. It is not clear from this website what Curl is. As far as i know, there has been done a reasonable amount of work in Python in the scientific area and on visualisation. see http://www.scipy.org/ Not everything is ment for Zope though. call zope methods from the operating system

Now I would like to to just the opposite thing: can I call Zope methods from the operating system (e.g. MySQLDA) without a loopback? External method UID

Hi all OK. I can't get the thing started with 2.6 at all. Hi, Is it then possible for example to have pieces of Python code start up when zope start up that will be persistent and executing for as long as zope runs? This code might be consuming data off a queue that is also persistent, processing the data and maybe publishing it to some other data structure to be processed by some other object? Or maybe have a persistent socket connection to some external system, the state of which is managed by another object?
