RE: [Zope] Using zope as something more than just dynamic webpage s

Hi, Is it then possible for example to have pieces of Python code start up when zope start up that will be persistent and executing for as long as zope runs? This code might be consuming data off a queue that is also persistent, processing the data and maybe publishing it to some other data structure to be processed by some other object? Or maybe have a persistent socket connection to some external system, the state of which is managed by another object? Copied objects using WebDAV turn into file objects
by Joe Block 01 Jul '02

01 Jul '02

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 I'm a Zope newbie. I'm running Zope 2.5.1 (on a MacOS X server running 10.1.5 if it matters). I can connect to Zope without a problem and edit existing files using vim, but if I try to copy a file so that I can test changes to it without affecting the original object, the copy turns into a file object, and I don't see a way from the Management interface to turn it back into a DTML method. Anyway, my question is, is there a way to preserve the type of a copied object, or do I need to keep a management window open and do all cloning from there? ZODB and ZCatalog related questions
by Thierry Florac 01 Jul '02

01 Jul '02

Hi... A few little questions about ZODB and ZCatalog... 1. I have a new Zope database (= 2.5 Mo). After adding a single PDF file of 3.5 Mo, the database is nearly 10 Mo huge !! Is required space into ZODB "reserved" by big blocks, or may the ZODB's size increase twice as the size of files which are stored into it ?? 2. After adding a few PDF files of nearly 3 Mo, stored as "ExternalFiles" (which means that only metadatas are stored into ZODB), and indexing them into a ZCatalog with TextIndexNG (my ExternalFiles provide a PrincipiaSearchSource method with the help of "pdftotext"), the size of the ZODB is 19 Mo. Does it means that full text indexing is using as much space as the document itself (but I'm starting with an empty ZCatalog) ?? 3. I'd like my products instances to be indexed automatically, as soon as they are created or modified. But as indexing seems to be quite long with big files, is it possible to index these documents in the background, so that the user does not have to wait until indexation is finished... 4. Does anyone have any experience with ZODB files bigger than 2 Giga-bytes on Linux. If so, how long does it take to pack ?? Thanks, Thierry -- Linux every day, keeps Dr Watson away... http://gpc.tuxfamily.org -- http://www.ulthar.net

referencing objects returned by z-catalog
by Ben Avery 01 Jul '02

01 Jul '02

Hi, I'm having difficulty with the syntax needed to access the objects in the results object returned by a z-catalog. I'm using the dtml-calendar tag to give a calendar display of objects, which have a date field. I have 3 objects of a product called calendar_event, which has a text property notes, and string field event_date. I have a z-catalog called ce_catalog, which indexes these, but without the notes field in the metadata - it's a large text field, so I don't want to bring it back in every object referred to in a search result. I try to call it with the following dtml: <dtml-calendar> <dtml-let year="date.year()" month="date.month()" day="date.day()" key="'%.4d-%.2d-%.2d' % (year, month, day)"> <dtml-in "ce_catalog({'event_date':key})"> <dtml-var expr="_['sequence-item'].notes"> </dtml-in> </dtml-let> </dtml-calendar> but I get an attribute error - error value: notes. if I replace the sequence-item dtml-var tag with <dtml-var expr="_['sequence-key']"> this gives me the object ids. and if I just call the object directly by id, e.g. <dtml-var expr="ce_1.notes">, this gives me the value I'm after. what am I doing wrong? spyce v1.1.14
by Rimon Barr 01 Jul '02

01 Jul '02

I'd love to get feedback on this from the Zope community. ---------- SPYCE - Server Python Pages SPYCE is a drop-in Apache module that supports simple and efficient Python-based dynamic HTML scripting. Those who like Python and are familiar with JSP, or PHP, or ASP, should have a look at this engine. It allows one to generate dynamic HTML content just as easily, using Python for the dynamic parts. Its modular design makes it very flexible and extensible. It can also be used as a command-line utility for HTML pre-processing, and also via CGI on any other server. v1.1.14 released on 1 July 2002. Get it at: http://spyce.sourceforge.net ---------- Your comments and suggestions are welcome. Re: [Zope] stop zope on Suse 8.0

>Why do you think there is no rc script? What about >'/usr/sbin/rczope start|stop|and_so_on'? Thanks! That's what I was looking for. I've been using Zope 2.3.2 until last week and it had a "start" and a "stop" script in the <ZOPEHOME> directory. When I didn't find them I read /opt/zope/ZServer/INSTALL.txt (there you're told to use python2.1 z2.py -w 8888 -f "" -p "" -m "" &) and I didn't realize that Zope and ZServer aren't the same thing (what's the difference?). python sockets on Suse 8.0
by horst wald 01 Jul '02

01 Jul '02

Hi, I'm running python 2.5.0 on Suse 8.0 and I'm trying to use sockets. I found the example programs "sockserver.py" and "sockclient.py" (see below) in a book but there are bugs in them. I fixed one in sockclient.py (it has to be "s.connect((HOST,PORT))", two parantheses) but I can't get sockserver.py to run. I keep getting socket.error: (22, 'Invalid argument') and this error occurs while processing the line conn, addr = s.accept() Any idea? Might it be that the python sockets only work under UNIX and not LINUX? Thanks in advance Horst ---------------------------------------------------- file: sockserver.py # Echo server program from socket import * HOST = '' # the local host PORT = 50007 # non-privileged server s = socket(AF_INET, SOCK_STREAM) s.bind(HOST, PORT) s.listen(1) conn, addr = s.accept() print 'Connected by', addr while 1: data = conn.recv(1024) if not data: break conn.send(data) conn.close() ---------------------------------------------------- file: sockclient.py # Echo client program from socket import * HOST = 'daring.cwi.nl' # the remote host PORT = 50007 # the port used by server s = socket(AF_INET, SOCK_STREAM) s.connect(HOST, PORT) s.send('Hello, world') data = s.recv(1024) s.close() print 'Received', `data` ---------------------------------------------------- No more files... _________________________________________________________________ Testen Sie MSN Messenger für Ihren Online-Chat mit Freunden: http://messenger.msn.de

stop zope on Suse 8.0
by horst wald 01 Jul '02

Hi, I'm running Zope 2.5.0 on Suse 8.0 . Since there is no start script any more you start it with python z2.py - but how do you stop it? Kill the process??? Couldn't that harm the object database if zope is just writing to it?
