Articles about pro and cons of Zope
by Bocquillon Philippe 18 Dec '01

18 Dec '01

Hello, I am just finishing a project using Zope/Python. I am writing a report in which I will detail my ideas about using Zope. As I would like to not be the only source of information for that, I would like to include URLs to some articles about other experiences using Zope. Could you provide me with some ? Thanks in advance, Philippe Bocquillon

Zope and Events (was re: Automatically run an external method?)
by Jean Jordaan 18 Dec '01

18 Dec '01

Hi Bruce Perhaps this is also worth a look: http://www.zope.org/Members/tmclaugh/ZClassEvents Quoting: """ This product will hotfix Zope to add some events to ZClasses for handling. The following events are added. They allow developers to: - validate properties (raise an error if property changes are not reasonable) - catalog upon change(no longer have to remember to catalog after changing the object) - notify owner, etc. (send emails) - and on and on... Events: onAdd(self, REQUEST) - Raised after a ZClass instance is created, renamed, or cut and pasted. onDelete(self, REQUEST) - Raised before a ZClass instance is deleted, renamed, or cut and pasted. onClone(self, REQUEST) - Raised before a ZClass instance is copied. - Raised before onAdd. onPropertyChange(self, propertysheet_id, changes, REQUEST) - Raised upon a property change on ZClass defined propertysheets. """ Regards, Jean

can't grant anonymous access
by Joshua Lanza 18 Dec '01

18 Dec '01

Hi, I am using CMF and have given anonymous every privilege in the root (after finding myself a bit frustrated), and I still get a login screen when I go to any page except the home page. I have given anonymous EVERYTHING, and in just about every folder, class, or object of any sort that I have used or might be accessing in the site. The actions_box shows the extended options that should only be visible to the site admin, so the permissions are recognized there, at least. I have looked for documentation/posts on this (I'm sure there must be many), but all I find is advice on squishdot config or long python scripts to set permissions. There is an easier/less time consuming way than that, I hope. Simply stated, is there something I need to do to allow anonymous to see my pages in addition to allowing view and access portal content? (and checking every $#&^%! box in the whole app) Thanks, Josh

Zope 2.4 Catalog Error
by Chris Bruce 17 Dec '01

17 Dec '01

I am getting this error when adding a ZDiscussion Topic. It only occured after upgrading to 2.4. Any ideas: Error Value: Catalog addIndex now requires the index type to be resolved prior to adding; create the proper index in the caller. Thanks, Chris

RE: [Zope] enhanced Virtual Host Monster question.

Eep! I'll give that a try when I get back to my servers... one of those silly mistakes when you spend too much time plugging away at things. Thanks for the heads-up! enhanced Virtual Host Monster question.
by Jeffrey Robinson 17 Dec '01

17 Dec '01

Hi Folks; On a Zope site I'm working on right now I'm using Apache to serve up some virtual hosts, and am using the enhanced VirtualHostMonster to help with the mapping. This works quite well when I have a domain mapped directly to a directory in Zope, but in one instance I have a mostly static site and then a catalogue which is dynamic. So when users go to www.fakedomain.foo Apache routes them straight to the static content. When people go to www.fakedomain.foo/catalogue they are rerouted to a directory in Zope. Right now I have everything working fine with Apache doing the remapping and a SiteRoot in the directory on Zope... but there're a few things I find bothersome about having the siteroot there. (Probably more an aesthetic thing than anything else). When I try to use the virtualhostmonster with the /catalogue link I can't see to get things quite right. (forgive my sample as I don't have access to the server right now) I have a line much like: Rewrite / http://location.of.zope:8080/VirtualHostBase/http/www.fakedomain.com:80/_vh_ catalogue >From what I got from the VirtualHostMonster documents this would be the proper way to do it; but alas Zope just gets grumpy at me trying to access an object beginning with "_" Am I just taking the wrong approach, or is the SiteRoot the best/only way to do what I'm trying to do? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks; Jeff Robinson Graphic Designer Motor Coach Industries ph: (204) 287-4385 fx: (204) 478-3023

please help - pcgi on win32
by seb bacon 17 Dec '01

arrghh! Complete pcgi newbie in very bad trouble: I'm having to install a site on NT with pcgi, being used to developing on Linux. I've made some changes which aren't appearing on my site (in fact it's completely broken). Because the site's broken, I copied back all the old sources. But I'm used to restarting servers, and with pcgi you don't do that. Is there a long running process I need to kill? seb
