"Publishing" static content
by Derek Simkowiak 11 Dec '01

My client wants to use Zope to manage a website. They want Zope's security, acquisition, etc. This is for a site with completely static content. After the site looks good under Zope, they want to "publish" the content to another (offsite, timeshared) Apache webserver. This would be standard HTML after Zope processes it (no DTML), and regular images (GIF/JPG), Flash, and AVI files. The deal is, they want to use a webhosting service that does not offer Zope. Is there a way to do this? I understand that you'd need the Zope server to be there for any dynamic content, but this is for static content only. I'm think a button I push that "syncs" up the Apache webhosting server with the Zope content. The first problem I see is that objects in zope don't carry extensions, i.e., it's index_html, not index.html. The Apache server would use those extensions to come up with the MIME type (HTTP Content-Type header)--if the files from Zope don't have extensions, how will the Apache server know what kind of file it is (and not just serve it up under the default text/plain MIME type?) Please advise. Thank You, Derek Simkowiak dereks(a)realloc.net

Thanks for the reply. I guess the next step is to work out how to reproduce the workflow elements of the CMF UI in a ZMI-based UI. I imagine that clues on how this would be done could be found in the "actions_box" method in the CMF Demo site. Is there any other code in the CMF Demo site that might be useful ? cheers, Darcy > > Tres. > -- > =============================================================== > Tres Seaver tseaver(a)zope.com > Zope Corporation "Zope Dealers" http://www.zope.com >

ZClass metatype question
by Mag. Martin Sperl 11 Dec '01

11 Dec '01

Hi! I am creating a Product with several ZClasses based on ZObjectManager. Most of these are nested classes, so that class b is defined within class a and thus class b is only available in an instance of class a for addition. So far so good, but my problem is that within an instance of class b there should be other instances of class b and this only works if I create class b in the Product folder. There are several such cases and my selection of possible classes to add gets very large and is not manageable... Sadly I can not add class b as valid subobject - it does not show up on that list... I am now trying to override all_meta_types but I am currently not sure where to get the meta_data info from... Is there any way around this? Thank's in advance, Martin

TypeError: cannot add type "Python Method" to string
by Ronald.Chichester＠bakerbotts.com 11 Dec '01

11 Dec '01

I am using a typical lookup routine in a python script to find information about objects and return some of their properties. The method works great when you are making a comparison of strings. E.g., the following code is working just fine... # Define a function to retrieve a particular class based on the element number... def get_class_by_title(objList, given_title): found = 0 ret_list = [] # Run through the objects in the staff folder to see if there is a match (with title)... for obj in objList: if found == 0: if given_title == obj.title: ret_list.append(obj.absolute_url) # List element 0 ret_list.append(obj.title) # List element 1 ret_list.append(obj.element_number) # List element 2 ret_list.append(obj.instance_type) # List element 3 ret_list.append(obj.derived_from) # List element 4 ret_list.append(obj.figure_number) # List element 5 found = 1 # Set flag on success... # Return indicative values if the desired object was not found... if found == 0: ret_list.append('Error') ret_list.append('Error') ret_list.append(-1) ret_list.append('Error') ret_list.append('Error') ret_list.append('Error') return ret_list ------------ ... which is called by... m = get_class_by_title(classList, j) Unfortunately, the same, it seems, cannot be said when I make the comparison using something other than a string. For example... # Define a function to retrieve a particular class association based on the element number... def get_class_association_by_element_number(objList, given_element_number): found = 0 ret_list = [] # Run through the objects in the staff folder to see if there is a match (with given_element_number)... try: for obj in objList: if found == 0: if given_element_number == obj.element_number: ret_list.append(obj.absolute_url) # List element 0 ret_list.append(obj.title) # List element 1 ret_list.append(obj.element_number) # List element 2 ret_list.append(obj.instance_type) # List element 3 ret_list.append(obj.f_class) # List element 4 ret_list.append(obj.to_class) # List element 5 found = 1 # Set flag on success... except: ret_list.append('Blew out of try block.') ret_list.append('Error') ret_list.append(-1) ret_list.append('Error') ret_list.append('Error') ret_list.append('Error') found = 1 # Return indicative values if the desired object was not found... if found == 0: ret_list.append('Error') ret_list.append('Error') ret_list.append(-1) ret_list.append('Error') ret_list.append('Error') ret_list.append('Error') return ret_list ... consistently returns an error when called by... n = get_class_association_by_element_number(classAssociationList, string.atoi(j)) where j is a string element that is stored in a lines property of the object in question. When this code is executed, I get a TypeError: cannot add type "Python Method" to string Does anyone know what the problem is? Note, I've done some diagnostics and simply had the method return the input value (given_element_number) and it does so properly. Here is the rest of the diagnostic information... Dear all, I recognized that if more than one (big)query is started on the server at the same time (by multiple users) it tends to get extremly slow. Is there any way to avoid this ? Sebastian

login authentication problem
by Finbarr O'Keeffe 11 Dec '01

11 Dec '01

I have changed the security setting on my index_html to only allow authenticated users to view the page and added the following code to my homepage zope site (to display the username on the homepage):- <dtml-var expr="_.SecurityGetUser().getUserName()"> On some PC's this works fine and when you keyin your username and password the homepage is displayed (with the username shown). On other PCs however you are prompted to login but once you enter a valid username and password the homepage is displayed but the username shows as "Anonymous User". Zope has obviously validated the user but then somehow switched back to "Anonymous User". I have tried to change various security settings within the internet explorer browser (version 5) but cannot get it to show the correct user. Out of 5 PCs, 3 work correctly and 2 show Anonymous User. Any help would be appreciated Finbarr

RE: [Zope] stability of zope?
by Meilicke, Scott 11 Dec '01

11 Dec '01

As an alternate view, I have had great success running zope 2.3.x and 2.4.x on NT 4, sp6a. It has never crashed for the 1.5 years it has been running. The usage is light, and internal only (Intranet), so take this with a grain of salt. I'm launching it officially next week, so we'll see what song I'm singing next Month... :) I'm guessing that core zope is stable on either platform, but external/add-on programs may have issues on one platform or another. Just do your testing before going live. I have mostly run on linux and I don't have any problems with that. The tests I did with windows just didn't go well. I have heard that is because of a bug in the windows vm. 2) Some python products are written pretty badly so you need to take a product and hammer it before you deploy it to see what problems it has. However I consider this to be a normal thing since you want to test every solution pretty throughly before you deploy it. With these caveats I find zope just doesn't crash or stop receiving data. I have run it both on its own and behind apache with equal success. Typical uptimes would be around 10 to 30 days because you have to restart the server to add a new product or apply security updates. Neither of those things are really a problem since you can just plan for a time to do it and 2 mins downtime planned is not bad. I am getting this error on a site and I would like to find what objects or object types are causing it so that I can fix the problem. Functions should not be pickled and I am not sure how someone did get some pickled. It was originally a zope 2.3.3 installation that was upgraded. 2001-12-11T17:59:19 ERROR(200) ZODB Couldn't load state for '\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00E\x94' Traceback (innermost last): File /home/zope/Zope-2.4.3-linux2-x86/lib/python/ZODB/Connection.py, line 544, in setstate UnpicklingError: <function HTML at 0x8615e14> is not safe for unpickling Designing the webpages of tomorrow http://webme-eng.com Designing the MMORPGS of tomorrow http://worldforge.org

Referencing a dtml method in a subfolder of the parent folder
by Igor Leturia 11 Dec '01

11 Dec '01

Hi! Maybe this is a very simple question, but I can't find information about it anywhere. In a dtml method I want to include a dtml method which is in another subfolder of the parent folder. So if I have a folder called 'folder', which has two subfolders called 'subfolder1' and 'subfolder2', and each has a dtml method called 'method1' and 'method2', how can I include 'method2' in 'method1'? I've tried '<dtml-var ../subfolder2/method2>', but it doesn't work. Thanks in advance, Igor Leturia
