ZCVSFolder woes
by Rob Miller 11 Dec '01

Hi, Is anyone out there using ZCVSFolder to help manage Zope development? I've played with it a bit, and I'd love to start using it on the project that I'm currently managing, but I'm finding it problematic... What I've found is that I can add CVS Folder objects with no trouble, and that, at first, I can enter the CVS Folder objects and perform CVS operations as expected. If I wait a while, though, and then try to browse into the CVS Folder using the management interface again, I find that my http requests never get a response. I'll click on the "CVS" object, the browser shows me that it's working, but I never get into the CVS Folder... If I log into the server and run ./stop from the correct directory, I'll find that, for every time a CVS Folder access failed, one of the Zope python processes didn't die. That is, if I tried unsuccessfully 3 times to browse into the CVS Folder, then there will be 3 python processes left over that should have been killed by the ./stop command. If I kill these processes by hand, then I can restart the server, and the CVS Folders will work as expected again... for a little while. Also note that I can stop Zope from responding altogether if I allow the number of failed CVS Folder accesses to equal the NUMBER_OF_THREADS that Zope is allowed to spawn. I'm running Zope-2.4.2 on FreeBSD-4.4, and I'm using ZCVSFolder-0.2.5. Has anyone else experienced this? Any ideas on how to make it stop happening? I like the ZCVSFolder interface, and being able to use it would GREATLY facilitate our development process. Thanks! -r

Apache Rewrites for VHM : was (Help!)
by Trevor Toenjes 11 Dec '01

11 Dec '01

Suresh, With eVHM, you can have Apache rewrite all requests to Zope's root. VHM then takes over redirecting to sub-folders inside Zope. try http://www.zope.org/Members/sfm/SiteAccessEnhanced for a nice Management tab of your redirects. I have forwarded your email to the list in hopes that someone can help with your Apache rewrites. Feel free to post your questions to the list directly at zope(a)zope.org. dtml-sendmail MailHost
by olpa＠sybcom.de 11 Dec '01

11 Dec '01

hmm.. hi folks.. perhaps this is quite old.. then sorry: I have a simple MailHost object and following DTML-Method: <dtml-sendmail mailhost=MailHost> From: blabla(a)blabla.de To: olpa(a)sybcom.de Subject: blabla blabla </dtml-sendmail> and this works with galeon (or everything else) except with Internet Explorer which returns a "KeyError" for MailHost!!! am I missing something... I use Zope 2.3.2, should I upgrade? --- If you care, you just get disappointed all the time. If you don't care nothing matters so you are never upset. -- Calvin --- Oliver Pabst .-------------------------. mailto:olpa@sybcom.de : : phone :+49 681 56600600 : project department : SYBCOM GmbH fax :+49 681 56600660 : : http://www.sybcom.de

Squishdot absolute_url question
by Richard Hewison 11 Dec '01

11 Dec '01

We've been busy customising Squishdot, and we are currently looking at the emails sent out to posters of articles. As it stands, Squishdot sends an email to the poster when a reply to their message has been posted (assuming that they have enabled the option in the AddPosting form to receive such email notifications). At the foot of the email is a link to an option to turn off notifications for further messages relating to the reply. However, what we want is for an option to turn off the notification for replies to the original message, not the replies. <dtml-var absolute_url> is for the reply. How can we tell it to do this for the original message? We tried <dtml_var aq_parent.absolute_url> and that came up with an 'unslicable object' error. Thanks in advance,

newbie q: howto get easy edit functionality on a database table for endusers, with input-restrictions?
by rene＠xs4all.nl 11 Dec '01

11 Dec '01

Hi. I'm trying to run Zope on FreeBSD 4.x-STABLE, with little success so far. :( What I need to know most is if Zope can support a database application with a sort of meta-definition of the database structure, so I can easily create definitions of forms (that are to be filled in by an end-user) in form-configuration files. In those form-configuration files, field and input-restrictions should be listed for any given table/view of/to the database. After that I need an engine to parse those form-configuration files into an HTML window that actually allows editing of the database content.. In short, I need a replacement for Microsoft Access ;-) Question: can zope do this, and if so, where is it documented? PS a reporting engine (a-la M$ Access) would come in handy very much, too.

Fake Cache
by Andy Jewell 11 Dec '01

11 Dec '01

Can anyone recommend a way for me to pre-load some pages? I don't want to use the RAM cache because Zope is running on my workstation and the number of pages I want to load is pretty significant. I had read on the list one time about a recommendation to have a method write/update a DTML Document and then write a cron job that executes the method periodically. This would work fine for me but I'm having trouble (being a relative Zope newbie) figuring out how I might make my scripts write directly to a DTML Document. For example, let's say this is my DTML Method called SummaryReport ------------------------------------------------------------ <dtml-var standard_html_header> <p> This is a big, heavy method call: </p> <dtml call "FindandDisplayThisAndThat()"> <dtml-var standard_html_footer> ------------------------------------------------------------ In concept, what I think I want to do is periodically do this (again - in concept, I know I can't do THIS!): -------------------- SummaryReport > GeneratedPage.html -------------------- And then just reference GeneratedPage.html instead of the DTML Method that requires all the time to run. I'm figuring there's something like an ObjectManager method that can generate an HTML page and write it as a DTML Document but I just can't find anything about this. Any recommendations? Thanks! Andy

Class - Object relationship
by Tom Cameron 11 Dec '01

11 Dec '01

I would like to know how an object/instance "knows" what class it is built from. This may be a silly question, but I just cant see how this works. The reason I ask, is that I am interested in building a system that may well involve moving objects from one machine to another and also upgrading objects from one version of a product to another. I want to understand more about the "glue" that ties an instance of a product to the product (ZClass or Python) and the classes it is derived from. How much of a python product can I change before the instances of that product no-longer know that they are instances of that product? Is is just the meta_type? What if I create two products with the same meta_type? Where can I read up on this? TIA Tom

zope performance lists?
by rene＠xs4all.nl 11 Dec '01

Hi. In order to 'sell' Zope to managent, I need to provide them with some testimonials of people who have ran database-intensive application(s) using zope, proving that it can handle many concurrent clients doing load-heavy work. got any URLs you can share with me?
