Help for Installation
by Schallert Alfred 21 Nov '01

21 Nov '01

Ladies and Gentlemen, I'm new to the Zope comunity and I would like to introduce myself shortly: My name is Alfred Schallert and I'm responsible for strategic issues of e-business in a german Construction supply comany. In this function I wanted to test ZOPE to see if the functionality is suitable for our needs. I installed the software Zope-2.4.3-win32-x86.exe, using the built in webserver as a Win NT service The software prompted me to start ZOPE with tying http://localhost:8080/manage. Even after rebooting my machine a couple of times, I'm still not able to start ZOPE. IE 5.5 is still saying it can not find the page... If there is anybody who can help I would highly appreciate any hints. Please reply to this e-mail adress. Thanks to everybody. security view vs. access_contents_information
by Ragnar Beer 21 Nov '01

Howdy! I've always been wondering what exactly "View" and "Access_contents_information" permit and what's the difference between them. Is this documented somewhere or can someone comment on this? Ragnar

ZCatalog: KeyError in removeForwardIndexEntry
by Jean Jordaan 21 Nov '01

21 Nov '01

Hi all .. In my ZPatterns-based app, I've added the cataloging SkinScript recommended by Steve Alexander in his posting http://groups.yahoo.com/group/zope/message/50479 It works, but since then I've repeatedly noticed this in the logfile: ------ 2001-11-21T08:14:31 ERROR(200) UnKeywordIndex unindex_object could not remove documentId 448177623 from index ComponentVersions. This should not happen. Traceback (innermost last): File /usr/local/zope/2-3-0/lib/python/SearchIndex/UnIndex.py, line 236, in removeForwardIndexEntry KeyError: 448177623 ------ This has not caused any adverse effects that I can see, but I'm worried about that "This should not happen." Any clues? Regards, Jean

Site Error Messages
by Michael 21 Nov '01

21 Nov '01

I am trying to disable the traceback which appears in site error messages under "view source". I located Application.py under lib/python/OFS and also HTTPResponse.py under lib/python/ZPublisher, but am not sure where to go from here. I was able to make "site maintainer" hot using mailto:, and got rid of the paragraph telling you to view source, but I cannot figure out how to eliminate the traceback. Any suggestions? -- Michael Lewis

-S option (was RE: [Zope] RE: Caching...)
by Stuart Nicholson 21 Nov '01

21 Nov '01

-S while running as a service under Windows (and probably as a daemon under Unix although I'm in Win32 land) seems to add a 'Restart' button to your Zope control panel. Thus you can restart Zope from the management interface which is kinda handy, assuming Zope is still happy to present the management interface to you. And you are quite correct this option doesn't appear to be documented anywhere. But > you're doing this on a PC (no hardware specs were specified) running > Windows (!) and on a DSL line. Hardware specs were most certainly provided (P3 850MHz 768MB RAM). I hate to be put in the position of defending Microsoft, but the OS didn't fall over. Neither did my DSL connection. Zope did. As of about 8:00 PM CST today my site has served more than 120,000 pageviews. Not bad, and it's settled down now, but I was having to restart Zope every hour or so for most of the day. > > If you try to do something similar with ANY OTHER platform (lets say > Apache+PHP+PHPNuke; or IIS+ASP+some forum software or other) > you're also going to get into the same kind of problems. THAT is precisely > your problem. You want to be able to build rockets without taking a course > in rocket science. Dont misunderstand me; you can still fire rockets or > build amateur rockets; just dont try to reach the moon. First of all, I never claimed to be cluefull. That's why I came here and asked the question. But neither am I clueless. The -S switch has been bothering me for a while. Do a search on zope.org for "command line switches" nothing. Nothing in any of the Zope documentation that I can find. Nor in any of the three Zope books currently in print. Even the Windows-specific doc doesn't say anything about the -S switch. Being a writer/information architect isn't my problem. Nor is it relevant to this issue. Get used to it; we're here and we need your help. But you need our help just as much. And to use your metaphor, I have no interest in building rockets, only flying them. Better get used to that too; there are a lot more of us than there are of you. > > Here are some tips: > > - enable caching on Zope Done and already cited. > - change from Windows to Linux Maybe, but again, Windows didn't fall over--Zope did. > - install more RAM on your PC 768Mb is the maximum I can install in what I've got. please take a look at this, it's probably really easy, but I'm totally stuck
by Jacob Singh 21 Nov '01

So here is my tragedy: I have an SQL query which pulls a record from a database. One of the fields is called file1. It contains a path to a file (i.e. media/inline/asdasd.jpeg). This file is accessible through LocalFS. LocalFS requires a syntax like media['inline']['asdasd.jpg'], so I wrote a script to convert the Unix style path to something LocalFS can understand. This works fine. Here is the code I use in my DTML doc to render asdasd.jpg: <dtml-call expr="REQUEST.set('imgpath',makeLocalFSPath(file1))"> <dtml-var "_.getitem(imgpath,1)" null="_[media['none.gif']]"> The first line calls the pythinon script that will make the LocalFS path. The second one endeavors to render the image using DTML's built in MIME to HTML technology which is necessary because using <IMG src=..... would not give me the with and height and is bad practice anyway. The null tag is just to shove that empty image marker in in case there is nothing in the field. When I call the page it gets a key error Error Type: KeyError Error Value: media['inline']['asdasd.jpeg'] But if I put <dtml-var "media['inline']['asdasd.jpeg']"> in any document in renders just fine. So basically the variable value gets rendered, but since It's not a variable but an expression, Zope doesn't know what to do. Oh and I tried putting double quotes on imgpath via the makeLocalFSPath function to no avail. Thank you for your help Jacob

RE: [Zope] Urgent help needed: Zope falls over under moderate loa d

Squid load balances ZEO clients using a round-robin approach. Squid does a name lookup using DNS or /etc/hosts, and caches those values, so when you run Squid as an accelerator, it will round-robin between all IPs it has in its IP cache for a given domain name. Virtual hosting is handled using a VHM in Zope, and a redirector in Squid (fills same role as mod_rewrite in Apache). With a redirector, you do not need to specify virtual in the httpd_accel_host option, as it is ignored for rewritten URLs... pyredir is a very easy to modify redirector written in Python... With Squid in front of Zope, you can use accelerated HTTP cache managers to explicity tell Squid cache info, along with any RAM cache managers you need...
