What do people use for editors? I am so sick of editing through the browser, it is hell. But I don't know where else to turn because the browser interface provides such great debugging.

JASC Namo http://www.jasc.com/products/namo/ Works better than Dreamweaver for editing Zope, but is not perfect. It edits objects with no file extension, but editing is still remote, requiring a local copy of the object. Maybe there's a way around this? Have not explored Namo WEBDAV yet... Just FTP. RE: [Zope] Caching... (and squid question added....)
by Schmidt, Allen J. 20 Nov '01

On your Linux boxes running Zope and Squid, do you have any issues with users accessing your site with AOL dialup and the AOL browser? This question goes out to anyone who cares to answer, also... We are moving to a Zope on Linux with Squid setup within the week. Currently on Windows 2000 and Zope 2.4 with a Windows version of Squid. The site moves very fast in general but now AOL users are complaining of 5+ minutes load times if it loads at all. Has anyone come across this? Thanks -----Original Message----- From: Mario Valente [mailto:mvalente@ruido-visual.pt] Sent: Tuesday, November 20, 2001 4:42 PM To: zope(a)zope.org Subject: Re: [Zope] Caching... How do they get around it? > >I'm sure caching isn't the only option... > This discussion is so pointless... FYI Google has upwards of 10.000 (thats TEN THOUSAND) linux machines serving as frontends for their service. And although Google's pages are dynamic, they're basically the same script run over and over again with little or no images. So caching is not the only option; its just that I'm sure you dont have Google's budget. What you're trying to do is asking Zope to DYNAMICALLY generate Squishdot pages (probably full of database accesses and images). But you're doing this on a PC (no hardware specs were specified) running Windows (!) and on a DSL line. If you try to do something similar with ANY OTHER platform (lets say Apache+PHP+PHPNuke; or IIS+ASP+some forum software or other) you're also going to get into the same kind of problems. If you compound this with the fact that you're also clueless (e.g running Zope without knowing what -S is for; or, for that matter, running any software without knowing what you're doing), you're in for a lot of trouble. Please, dont answer "I'm a writer, not a programmer". THAT is precisely your problem. You want to be able to build rockets without taking a course in rocket science. Dont misunderstand me; you can still fire rockets or build amateur rockets; just dont try to reach the moon. Here are some tips: - enable caching on Zope - change from Windows to Linux - install more RAM on your PC - get more CPU for your PC - put Squid in front of your Zope - fine tune your Zope to use only the necessary command line switches - pack your Zope database frequently - stop all the other software that you might have running (i.e. dedicated server) - create static versions of the most accessed page(s) - you might have a memory leak somewhere; plug it We're running a consumer portal with about 1 million hits per day using 2 frontends (regular PC machines) connected to 1 backend (server PC). Telling Users to Wait
by Edmund Goppelt 20 Nov '01

How do I warn my users that a given Zope page will take a long time to load? Is there any way to load a preliminary "please wait this may take a while" page while the user waits for the real page to load? -- Ed Goppelt

I just had a quick question about zope or two... First one being, I know that everything is web enabled, but is there anyway (currently made or not) to let people use "fake" tags and parse them later to do something? i.e. We have a bunch of rather... non-web-people where I am and they currently have something in perl where they can do things like put asterisks around a word to make it bold and things such as that. Is there any equivalent in zope? Thanks, Shawn __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Hello, On this topic, I have a question also ... Are there editors that allow the editing of properties on objects? Is there such a way to do this with DreamWeaver? Uploading files is nice, but without being able to set properties, a lot of the power of Zope is lost! Isn't this supposed to be doable over WebDAV? This is great when I'm developing Products because I can have product modules and Zope objects open at the same time in the same editor. But then, emacs is not just an editor, it's a bit of a kookoo religion. RE: [Zope] Newbie Question : Problems with Automatic Cataloging o f ZClasses
by sean.upton＠uniontrib.com 20 Nov '01

20 Nov '01

Make sure that you set up the indexes and metadata entries in the Catalog for the method and/or property names you would like indexed, or cached in metadata columns, respectively; then, make sure your ZClass was first inheriting from CatalogAware. Also, make sure you are reindexing the object upon object construction, and edit as well... That should be it... If this works, you should be able to access instance objects' entries in the catalog with your query form via <dtml-in Catalog>, and you can use the metadata column name in <dtml-var> inside the dtml-in for your search summary content, or (slower) use Catalog.getObject() to get the referenced object directly (i.e. <dtml-var "Catalog.getObject().id">)... good luck... I have been trying to create zclasses whose objects get automatically catalogued. I have followed the tutorial in the Zope Book (Chapter 9 - 'Automatic Cataloging' section) and it all seems to work correctly. When I go and view the entries in the catalog however, only the date gets registered in the index, and date and absolute_url gets registered as metatypes - no other properties appear to be registered. I have tried other tutorials and HowTos but cannot seem to find an effective way of updating a catalogue with all the objects properties. Could someone give me a clue _______________________________________________ Zope maillist - Zope(a)zope.org http://lists.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope ** No cross posts or HTML encoding! ** (Related lists - http://lists.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope-announce http://lists.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope-dev )
