Photo product: how to recreate thumbnails with Imagemagick
by Timothy Wilson 01 Nov '01

01 Nov '01

Hi all, I'm using Ron's great Photo on my site. Until recently I was unable to use Imagemagick and had to use PIL to render the different images. I've got Imagemagick working now and the difference is dramatic! The PIL-rendered versions aren't even close to the Imagemagick-rendered ones. Now the question, can I force Zope to create new version of these thumbnails using Imagemagick without recreating all of them from scratch? -Tim -- Tim Wilson | Visit Sibley online: | Check out: Henry Sibley HS | http://www.isd197.org | http://www.zope.com W. RE: [Zope] zope operations atomic?
by Clark OBrien 01 Nov '01

Chris, Thanks for the explanation. I don't see how ApplicationLevelConflictResolution can handle the dirty read problem though. -----Original Message----- From: Chris McDonough [mailto:chrism@zope.com] Sent: Wednesday, October 31, 2001 3:11 PM To: Clark OBrien; k_vertigo(a)yahoo.com; zope(a)zope.org Subject: Re: [Zope] zope operations atomic? > Example: > To count the number of files uploaded to my site I set an > index as an attribute to a Folder. These are large files so they > take some time to upload. What happens after two people upload at once > does my index only get rolled back or do the files uploaded also > get rolled back? If the uploads finish at the same time (meaning the transactions will likely commit at the same time), a ConflictError is raised, and one of the requests is retried. (Note that the file needn't be uploaded from the remote browser again; Zope keeps the request around -- which includes the cgi data, which includes your file's data -- to retry with.) The uploader never notices any of this, except perhaps the site will become sluggish. None of this has anything to do with the counter in your example, except that a ConflictError is more likely to be raised when changing "hotspot" items like a counter. The example you provide of a counter is one that is problematic for ZODB for two reasons: 1. Multiple simultaneous commits which include counter incrementing can cause conflicts 2. The undoability of FileStorage causes the Data.fs file to grow on every successful transaction. These problems are orthogonal to each other; they are not related to each other in any way except that they both occur in the default Zope configuration. The first is solved via application level conflict resolution (http://www.zope.org/Members/jim/ZODB/ApplicationLevelConflictResoluti on) as well as a storage which supports it, the second is solved by using a nonundoing storage. So in the example you gave, you're most worried about problem #1, conflicts. To solve this particular problem, you would implement a "smart" counter that did not make itself a hotspot. There is actually already one of these that ships with Zope. It's in the BTrees.Length module, and it's a counter that does app-level conflict resolution. It's also a good module to take a look at if you're interested in seeing how conflict resolution works. Note that none of this is terribly different AFAICT than how most relational databases implement multithreadedness save for the fact that ZODB uses optimistic concurrency instead of pessimistic, allowing the app developer to be able to handle conflict scenarios in order to maximize performance. acquisition-based class initialization on Zope startup
by Mitchell Model 01 Nov '01

01 Nov '01

Here's an interesting hole I dug for myself; any ideas on how to get out? The question comes down to: is there any (reasonable) way to invoke a Zope Python Script automatically every time the server starts up. I realize this is a little weird, since Python scripts, DTML methods, and the like are for creating client-side pages, but I've found it convenient to also use them for site setup, editing meta-information such as properties for classes, etc. Is there perhaps something like a product's __init__.py that gets invoked late enough to be able to do Zope.app().unrestrictedTraverse, or perhaps another way to get at the Zope scripts and methods? Here's what I did that makes me want a solution to this challenge. I have some classes defined in my product. Initialization of these classes includes setting up some properties. Originally, the properties were defined in a file, and my product's __init__.py called a function that read the contents of the file and did Zope API stuff to setup the properties. Then I decided that the properties should be web-editable, not in a file in the product implementation, so I moved the file contents into Zope DTML methods (by the way, what *is* the preferred Zope type of straight text?), and I wrote a Python Script that initialized the properties for the classes based on the Zope methods. This way, a site manager can edit the properties, execute that Python script, and immediately have all instances of the class see the changes. I discovered to my chagrin that when I restart Zope, all the class properties have disappeared (of course), and my __init__.py no longer recreates them. So I have to add back in to __init__.py a call to something to recreate the properties, but that something has to either call the Zope Python script or get the contents of the DTML methods that define the properties, and during product loadup it's too early to try to navigate the Zope object hierarchy (which I normally do via Zope.app().unrestrictedTraverse, which I can give a path to my Zope Python script, and follow it with () to invoke it, which works in the debugger after Zope has started, but not while my product is being loaded; in fact, Zope doesn't even have an 'app' yet at that point).

SkinScript: manage_FTPput / manage_FTPget
by Jean Jordaan 01 Nov '01

01 Nov '01

Hi all Roche Compaan has patched ZPatterns/SkinScript/Methods.py to make skinscripts FTP-able. This is very useful if you do your editing on the filesystem using sitecopy, for instance. Here's the patch, against ZPatterns-0-4-3p2: [jean@blommie SkinScript]$ diff Methods.py /home/httpd/zope/Products/ZPatterns/SkinScript/Methods.py 121a122,125 > def manage_FTPget(self): > "Get source for FTP download" > self.REQUEST.RESPONSE.setHeader('Content-Type', 'text/plain') > return self.read() 132a137,142 > manage_FTPput = PUT > > def read(self): return self.text > def get_size(self): return len(self.text) > getSize = get_size > 146c156 < ('Change SkinScript methods',('manage_upload','PUT','manage_edit')), --- > ('Change SkinScript methods',('manage_upload','PUT','manage_edit','manage_FTPget','body')), Regards, Jean Jordaan

RE: [Zope] CMF Newbie Presentation and Viewlet Info
by Schmidt, Allen J. 01 Nov '01

01 Nov '01

Great job! The only problems I see are that you recorded the Viewlet at too high a screen res...as limiting as it is, it should be at 640x480....or at 800x600....since there is now way to change the window sizing. And, you should speed it up a bit and reduce the distance of mouse movement. This really slows things down. About Viewlets.... I use Viewlets all the time for many things. Has been a powerful tool in my arsenal. Since it's a freeware tool, EVERY aspect of Zope and the products that are created should have a Viewlet tutorial to show setup and/or usage and the product actually in use. And since created Viewlets can be uploaded, stored and accessed for free, by anyone, it would be another great promotion tool for Zope. And since most folks relate to visually presented material, it would certainly help to see how a product is being used in a real situation instead of just writing about it. Go get ViewletBuilder2 and make your own Viewlets at www.Qarbon.com -- Fun to do also! Windows, Linux, Unix and soon Mac for development - playback on just about ANY browser. And the parts to run the created Viewlets work great inside of Zope for presentation. (Just to be clear...I have no relation to them...I just enjoy using it and have done so for 2 years now.) FTP and file names
by Tina Poole 01 Nov '01

01 Nov '01

Hi all, We are using WS_FTP to load files onto our Zope site. The problem is attempting to download some of the files off the site for updating. It seems to be the file name which is causing the problem. They are being seen in the FTP window as Name Date 01 14:09 savingafile instead of Name Date savingafile 14022001 01:09 It seems, as far as I can tell, parts of the date are being added to the front of the file name. This does not happen for all files and I can't find a common factor to the files that are displayed in this way. They work fine on the site and in the management pages. If you look in 'The Zope Book' in chapter 3 - Using Basic Zope Objects, in the section Uploading Documents and Files with WS_FTP, figure 3-3 shows an example of what is happening. The first three files have wrong names and the last file (openwindow) appears to be OK. I have gone through the changing the settings in WS_FTP and searching their knowledge base as well as the Zope site but can't find any reference to this problem. Any help or advice would be appreciated, thanks tina tina poole technical writer MineStar Mincom Limited Brisbane Australia ___________________________________________ This transmission is for the intended addressee only and is confidential information. How do I send requests from forms?
by Phillip Gibb 01 Nov '01

01 Nov '01

Hi, I am used to the std way in tomcat to place my java servlets in a directory that I can see. But now with Zope, I find myself a bit lost. Looking at the management interface it appears that I must import the files from the import dir. After doing this and using a normal form structure I can't seem to get it working - can't find the resource. please help this newbie Phill

Restrict users by IP?
by Matthew L. Wirges 01 Nov '01

01 Nov '01

I've been trying to restrict users by IP (like in an apache .htaccess file) with Zope. This page, http://www.zope.org/Members/muesli/AuthByAddress, seemed like it would hold the answer. I tried this method but unfortunately I can't add a user with an IP with wildcards to the acl_users folder. E.G. Domain: 128.46.* or Domain: 128.46.*.* Anyone been able to do this? -- Matthew Wirges Credo quia absurdum est.

Unique ID's ?
by Philippe Jadin 01 Nov '01

01 Nov '01

Hello, After some deep searches about the subject, I found that zope has no real unique ID's. For a particular application (where we can't use the object "url" as an ID as ojects will move), I'd like to assign a unique_id property to each object whenever they are added (the ID must be really really unique). Is there already a patch that do that ? Is there a reason why zope doesn't provide this facility? Thanks in advance, Philippe
